My Belated build thread

After doing further research into this build and having spoke to Bill about it a few days ago. The turbo kit that is currently on it is a Pagparts bottom mount manifold with a GT3071r 0.63 V3 Billet comp wheel Dual ball bearing with V-Band hotside.
adeda7b55e41777212c5c968e9fc01e2.jpg

I've not really heard of Pagparts before until now and apparently in the US they rave about this Billet comp wheel upgrade. This turbo is rated at around 450-460whp this is around 540bhp with a better response than a standard Garrett GT3071r... apparently capable of full boost at 3800-4000rpm and holding power all the way up to 7800-8000rpm. This does depend on all the other supporting mods of course.

Obviously need to fully inspect the car and all its parts condition. I'm thinking of getting a Nortech 1.5" manifold and using this turbo, but future proofing so if and when I decide to change the turbo it should be just a straight swap out.

Very nice buy mate. Did you find out ur wmi issue?
Id be interested in the vibra-engine mounts when you come to sell them.

Thanks mate, it was a no brainer getting it nah not got to the bottom of it, going to try different ratio of water/meth and doing some logging. Yeah sure I’ll let you know about the mounts, just need to double check. The gearbox mount is the same for your car.

Went to see Badger5 at the weekend to have a catch up and see a Stroker Octavia G25-660 get meth’d up on the dyno. With some impressive results!

Couple of pictures of my cars side by side, almost like the dark knight / knight in shining armour thing going on.

After further discussions and planning..... Going to be breaking the A3 and keeping the stroker engine and oil cooler. Everything else will go up for sale, which I’ll post up on the forum and eBay once they come off the car sometime in September.

With that said, I’ll be going Nortech top mount, 44-45mm wastegate and probably G30-770, having looked at compressor maps and no one having used this turbo yet on the 1.8t 20v (stroker) I’m kinda thinking go big or go home

Shopping list....

G30-770 Turbo
Nortech 1.5” Top Mount Exhaust Manifold
44-45mm Turbosmart External Wastegate
3” Downpipe
Fluid Dampener
1000cc Bosch Injectors
Forge Supersized Recirculating Valve
Gearbox (uprated)

Should see me north of 600bhp all being well.

Here are a couple compressor maps for anyone to look at, Garrett have a “Boost advisor” where by you input all the info and it generates a list of suitable turbos to run on the car.

My goals I’ve inputted were 650bhp on pump fuel with the 2L stroker engine.

This is the G30-770 @ 30psi compressor map, which seems very suitable for my setup, sitting perfectly in max efficiency.

This is how the G25-660 compares, all the same info running @ 30psi.

As you can see the G25-660 would have to work extremely hard to achieve 650bhp and be way out of it’s max efficiency. Generating masses of heat which is how I read the compressor map.

I’m a novice when it comes to turbos and reading compressor maps, so I’m open to opinions good or bad.

When you hoping for it to be back on the road in g30 mode? Let me know if you find them at a good price anywhere,
what wastegate is on the a3 now? Mia the a3 boot panels the same as in the s3?

Not sure mate, I’d like to think mid October. I’d be buying everything through Badger5 mate to be honest. The wastegate that’s on the A3 is a Turbosmart 38mm I believe.

When you say boot panels, which do you mean? The inside boot panels?

Put me down for the wastegate aswell as the brembos then,
Yeah the inside boot lip and the two sides that cover the amp and lights

Sorry mate, Things have changed slightly on the brembo’s. I’m gonna keep them and sell the K-Sports. As for the wastegate, now that I’m ditching the idea of keeping the original GT3071r turbo and going G30-770. I’m gonna sell then turbo as a complete setup. So the wastegate will be sold with the turbo, manifold and downpipe.

I’d need to have a look and see if those panels are the same as the S3 I’ll let you know when I’m next there.

Are they k sports any good ? I just looked a badger5 probably where il get mine from with the ecu

The K-sport are fine plenty of stopping power and they are bigger discs. Just more maintenance costs, replacement discs and pads are quite expensive. The brembo’s will do fine for what I need them for, easier to swap out pads for track days and for road use.

What you have to remember mate is Badger5 are very competitive with prices but it’s the customer service you want. Bill and his team has always been very supportive. A service that you are not always likely to get anywhere else. That’s why Badger5 has such a good reputation.

Yeah that’s true I didn’t see the g30 990 on the but I’d imagine he will be able to get it if I go for that over the 770, don’t see the dw65 fuel pump anymore either, pm me what you’d be wanting for the k sports I love the look of the 18z but the more I read the less confident I am I’d be happy with the pedal travel

Badger5 are a Garrett supplier so he would be able to get anything you wanted I’m sure.

You’ll probably be looking at external swirl pot setup for your build, something I’m gonna have to consider for mine as well potentially.

Best thing to do with the braking side of things it’s lots of research, I don’t know what the travel is like on the 18z brembo’s, they are a big caliper for sure. The K-Sports would have been made to run correctly for what car you buy then for.

Yeah its the big piston size on the 18z that makes the pedal feel bad, obviously they weren’t designed for our cars and others with them have tried using different master cylinder but seems a lot of effort so On the look out For a decent set as a back up , beat me in mind when they going up for sale

never thought about that was thinking a dw65 and a line pump aswell but will look Into it

I have a DW65 and an 044 inline... that supported 620hp with overhead... swirl pot is a decent thing to have for reassurance but not entirely required for the power level...

I may well have gone down that route at some point tbh but don't let it get in the way of the rest of the build...

You will want to use teflon lines for the internal runs... and ideally firewall off the swirl pot/pumps etc

That's a excellent way ur taking the car now. 650hp the thing will be a rocket going up the road.

Thanks mate, see what happens but that’s my goal now getting that A3 just made it happen sooner, was meant to be buying a house end of this year. With all this Covid stuff going on, I’m putting that on hold until next year now. 650bhp would be scary fast! I’m still going to running loads of water/meth and NA cams..... who knows where that G30-770 will land me.

You thought about the badger5 cams?

I have toyed with the idea of the badger spec cams, as seen they do change a big turbo build dramatically 100bhp+ But as I have a set of NA cams which would certainly help a big turbo build I’ll use them and see what happens. Be a good experiment to see what they do just dropping them in.

I sold my S3 over a year ago now but still pop in here occasionally.

Initially we were both kind of on a similar path as eachother with the hybrid set-ups etc.

I remember seeing that A3 for sale on here originally and thinking it was a bargain.

Really enjoying watching how you progress this, keep up the good work.

I’ve been trying to find a build thread on this car, I’m assuming Neil (owner) never did one.

Good to see your still around bud, I remember we were discussing stuff about the hybrids, etc.

Stay in touch

What do you drive now, do you miss the s3

Finally got myself the V8 BMW M3 I’d been promising myself for the last 3 years.

I do miss the S3 sometimes, I learnt a lot from it and enjoyed constantly upgrading and spannering on it.

Everytime I log in on here I hope to see it pop up with a thread. Although it failed its last MOT on “excessive exhaust smoke at idle” which isnt a good sign.

The M3 is more suited to what I want from a car now though.

For ref, Badgerwagen on its G25-660 on 34psi boost did 565bhp a few weeks ago. on its 1.9 engine

I think Garrett base there max turbo figures on running them with E85 fuel and larger displacement. Obviously something we can’t really get our hands on over here. Not to mention they tend to be DYNO happy in the states.

Your Badgerwagon Bill is probably the best we would expect from the G25-660. Be interesting to see what it would do on a 3.2......

I had a go with the boost adviser...
Screenshot 2020 08 17 at 101728

Not surprised at the recommendation but boost levels are interesting... considering I planned to run my vanilla GT3582r at 1 bar... this was using pump gas option too

<tuffty/>

....also worth noting that boost values are also subject to flow restrictions in the charge air system so you may well need a little more boost to reach the airflow required to achieve these results...

Would be good to see how the “Boost advisor” compares to real world figures. I know there are loads of variables..... but still.

Got my list together of the things I needs to buy. Will be getting it all from Badger5. I think the turbo will be the first thing to order as there’s quite a lead time looking at Badger5 website. Need a chat with the main man to get the ball rolling

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

That's good news on the bt build your not hanging around. How long is the lead time for the turbo you want?

Once I’ve got something in my head mate I go for it. It’s just getting my ducks all in a line. Selling stuff, taking things apart, so on and so on.

The turbo is a G30-770 which has a lead time of around 21 days at the moment. So if I order that next week..... should come in time for all the other things to happen. I do need to get my gearbox or a gearbox built to take the pain the engines going to be throwing at it. Just waiting on a quote from Gas&Gears.

Badger5 (Bill) has been kind enough to store my A3, I’ve already sold my engine that’s currently sat in my S3...... just a case of organising and being prepared so the swap goes as smoothly for then as possible for them.

That's good progress mate.
There is a guy on fb a big turbo 20vt page and he is selling a 2"nortec v-band manifold if it of any interest to you

2”?!? That’s massive.... I think Badger5 has either 1.25” and 1.5” Nortech manifolds.

What’s he after for it? Might be overkill even for my set up.

Don't bother with 2"...

1.5" is more than enough for 600hp and low EGT's...

What would you need 2” for anyway? That’s gonna slow velocity down a fair bit I’d imagine. What is 1.5” good for anyway? I know it’s 600Bhp+

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Couldn't tell you for sure... but given Bill has plenty of cars out there making over 500hp in 1.25" runners and I made 620hp in 1.5" with decent EGT's you can read into that what you will... I suspect its more power than most 20v builds could handle :)

Probably a 2.1 stroker running a G35-900 or something @ 40psi haha....

I’ll be going with the 1.5” but thank you Hydro for thinking of me

2" is huge... not much room with 1.5" but none with 2"... have done a car with a 2" before.... IIRC he ended up with one of Bill's 1.5" in the end
