Tyre recommendation

Hi,
I’ve just signed up to get a recommendation for tyres. We have a 15plate Audi S3 that is due to have the tyres replaced. When we bought the car it was fitted with Pirelli p zero tyres and we have continued to use them however, we are thinking or trying something new. Can anyone recommend the best tyres or should we stick to the Pirelli p zeros?
 
I have the Michelin PS4S and rate them as do many others. Quite pricey though. Paid £500 fitted on 19s.

Michelin Primacy 4 fitted with a free echo for 275.00 all 4 tyres
I would like some bigger rims though, but got some other things to do first.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4
 
I found a huge decrease in road noise and therefore increase in driving comfort when I went from the OEM Continentals to Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 5. This was on a 1.8 A3 quattro though, not an S3.

That's just your imagination it depends on the surface of the road mostly .. Many roads are old and rough which makes noise stronger ... When I driving on motorway most road surface is rough to stop cars skidding ... And some parts of the roads has new asphalt and once I drive on it woow car is soo quiet..
 
Michelin pilot sport 4 S. Best replacement for the p zeros. But as said above pricey, but worth it.

It really wasn't my imagination, the car was night and day different between the Contis and the Goodyears. It was noisy as hell on motorways and actually very wearing to drive because of it. It's hugely more pleasant to drive on the Goodyears.

You have an opinion on everything, don’t you! Well this time you’re wrong. I can confirm that some tyres are louder that others on the same road surface. A fact supported by the fact that manufacturers put the dB rating with the tyres now, along with the economy rating. Oh, and for good measure, worn tyres make more noise than new ones.

Well yeah but not opinion but experience .. :) had 4 brands of tyres and the sound was pretty much same .. not much difference .. yeah of course you see the decibels on stickers and all tyres has nearly same 71 or 72 that's it never seen more or less and that one decibel not gonna help you much but if u noticed difference then great ..

We have a couple of members like this, like to shout people down, force their opinion upon and have a general 'my view or nothing' attitude whilst disregarding others real-world experiences.

I find the mute button helps in these circumstances.

With regard to the OP's question...... Michelin PS4 work for me on a 1.8 Quattro.

I put 4 Michelin cross climate + on my car a couple of months ago and have had 4 seasons staying in Scotland!

I'm surprised at how good they are.
Had always put Eagle f1 assymetrics on car but these are every bit as good imo

Just swapped p zeros for PS4s and what a Difference! A bit noisy but worth it.

Why everyone (or almost) are so hype about those french michelin tyres just because are best?
They becoming "tacky" now...

I'm still happy with my P-Zero's. Bear in mind they have pretty much the best rim protection for your alloy's so bear that in mind if that's important to you and you change to something else...

What tyres....a very difficult question. What do you want: long life, high performance in wet and dry, good rim protection, low noise etc. Most people want all of those, but really not attainable, you will have to live with some compromises. Generally speaking OEM tyres offer low noise as not to put people off on a test drive and poor mileage life. I suggest you check out tyre comparisons online. Tire Rack in North America is an excellent source for detailed tests. The Michelin PS4 is an excellent tyre but it is noisy and does not absorb impacts well. Again compromises and people's comments are subjective to their wants and desires.

Agree the rim protection on the P-Zero AO is superb. However, the standard P-Zero in the same size doesn’t have as much rim protection.

As others have said, it depends how you define best. The Michelin PS4s offer excellent wet and dry performance but at the cost of more road noise.

For most people, raw grip wins over everything else, especially when that greater grip is with some steering angle - hence the fanboys. Chassis, traction control, ABS and systems like vectored braking can help but the limit is when the tyre slips on the road. Combine these systems with excellent raw grip and you win twice.

Personally I find the AO P-Zeros seem to lose traction before PS4s and seem a bit floaty on the edge in comparison, but wear rate is lower than I was expecting. It does look as though the PS4 has a wider patch area on the road compared to P-Zeros of the same size.

I hear good things about the Goodyear Asymmetric tyres but have never tried them. Given the cost of tyres, it would be an expensive experiment and a commitment for a few years - that is what motoring journalist tyre reviews are for. The resulting graphs are of limited value as they are scaled for best to worst to emphasise a relatively small difference, not best to zero.

I have perfect (I would say best £200 pounds for all 4) tyres Blacklion had them year now and they are awesome.. And I driving fast and there is still plenty of tread just did swap after year back to front front to back.
Grip is as well very good.
I would say quattro audi handle car very efficiently and with stability control on will prevent any slipping or skidding
Few times I did sharp turn and I was amazed how car won't drift
But if you would turn stability off then you can expect sliding :)
 
Just got 4 new P zeros fitted today...235/35/19 OEM P zeros didnt last more than 11500 miles,second lot have lasted a lot longer changed at 28200 miles today,my Mrs Fiesta OEM had PS4s fitted ...first lot lasted 12000 miles on a 1-0 litre engine FWD...dreadfull,they are noisey but very grippy in the summer most of this due to the excellent chassis on the new fiesta but like all low profile tyres hard in the winter.

Summation Michelin aint worth the higher cost....Buy P zeros or Goodyeay Eagle tyres just as good but cheaper l got the 235/35/19 P zeros for £107 a corner
 
Jassy - you say you don’t rag it so how did you muller a full set of tyres in 11k miles? My P- zeros still going strong at 10k and I don’t drive like a granny.

Lol my commute is mostly dual carriageway 50 miles per day... Glasgow to Edinburgh...Say...the first summer l had my car was in 2018 there was a heatwave...that year...lol for over 6 weeks infact tyre fitter told me this that high performance tyre durability goes tits up in hot weather,same as the Mrs car first summer was in 2018 and they lasted less than they should have

Avon ZZ5's or ZV7's.

UK made tyre for UK conditions.

So much better than Pirelli P zero's and much less road roar noise.

Between them an Dunlop Sportmax, which are also brilliant, I won't be swayed by expensive tyre brands again.

I used to use Avons on my 400bhp Impreza, and they performed faultlessly, and in the wet they are something special.

The best rain tyre I ever found was Uniroyal RainSports.

Where do you get your tyres from? I was thinking to get them from a well-known website which offer fitting in my area. I'm just abit worried they'll send me to a dodgy garage and will scratch my alloys.
Also, after reading these I'm thinking to switch from the OEM Contis to the P-zeros AO. However, I might be a noob but can't find exactly which ones are they as there are a few which are named exactly the same!?

No they won't scratch you alloys make sure they using PLASTIC srtipping head bit and u can relax I think now many tyre garages has it

Got my indy to do mine, he guaranteed he wouldn't damage the alloys (and he didn't) price was on par with everyone else as well.

I've got around 3.5m of tread left on my P zero's I've done 12700 miles I don't think that is great to be honest .

What are the best 18'' tyres for low road noise ? as I think I will be due a set soon .
 
Now I'm torn between the P Zero AO and the Eagle Asymmetric 5. Both are rated as good rim protection but which is better?

Pretty poor from the OEM factory fitted tyres....my second set lasted 16k miles

I agree very poor for OEM tyres .

I do like the look of the P zero and the rim protection is really good just shocked at the wear for the mileage we have done .
I guess it is part and parcel of having a performance car .
 
I got 60-65k km out of the Continentials that came stock on our S3. I also jsut swapped my original tyres on stage 2 Mk7R to MP4S after getting 70k km out of them. Guess I'm not driving car hard enough. Lots of freeway driving and no LC must help. Could be the Australain roads/weather and lower speed limits helping to last longer.
 
In the end, I'm leaning towards the Goodyear Eagle Asymmetrical. Found two versions, one is designated AO and it's slightly more expensive one isn't. Now, is there a huge difference to warrant paying more for the AO?

Best tyres are Blacklion Champoint BU66 all for just for £200 After year they still have plenty tread 6mm - 5mm and I ve done over 15k miles
best setup 255/35/19 front and 245/35/19 rear

Hey I'm not knocking them mate, rather the opposite!

I bought 2 new fronts last year for my A5, I went with the same make that was on as at the time I was intending to give the car back this year, so didn't want to give them an excuse to knock it. But prior to those tyres, the last time I bought any tyres at all would have been 1997/98, since then I've either had company cars or I've sold the cars I've owned before they've needed tyres :)
