2007 S3 Purchase! A few questions.

Hi, I have just purchased a 2007 S3 in sprint blue. I'm loving the car but have a few niggles in terms of features.

The things which are bugging me are the fact I cannot bluetooth my phone to the car to recieve calls even though the steering wheel has the buttons on! Also there is no aux input or any way of playing my own music through the stereo. I was thinking of an RNS-E retrofit but this seems expensive and I'm not too sure how I would go about this even after reading some retrofit posts.

If anyone could point me to some retrofit services in east anglia or have any ideas for me (I do have VCDS) that I could do so that I am able to connect my phone to the car it would be appreciated!

Attach a photo of your stereo, hqve buttons on steering wheel doesnt mean you have the feature as its the rnse that have blutooth function but you still cant play music through via bluetooth u need the ami plug normally located in your glovebox if facelift and under the armrest if pre facelift where you can buy a wma3000a which is a bluetooth device for about 70 quid that'll let you stream .

But at this stage id just put in an aftermarket one as where in 2020 and most are apple carplay or andriod so its more seamless and effortless plus maps youtube etc.

Yea i know, like i said personaly my s3 has the rnse and im comtenplating putting an android h.u in but i domt use the car everyday and id rather listen to my exhaust then spotify so it doesn't bother me. Id go for an aftermarket head unit if your car doesnt have bluetooth and ami slot installed as you can get some that look oem

Mine will be used as a daily so my own music is a must as much as i love the exhaust note, would you say rnse retrofit is not worth it then?

Sorry in advance for all the terrible spelling mistakes im about to make and lack of punctuation and possibly english been a long day.


You gona spend 200-350 on a rnse which at best is 2012 maps for nav.(you can do whati dome and update maps via cd, but i still dont use the nav feature as google maps on my phone has real tike traffic etc). Plus your gona **** about with alot of wiring possiblw coding for steering wheel controls and it will only give you bluetooth for phone calls not music. You have to buy a separate device to stream music, the one i mention in my previous post which isn't cheap in all honesty and just act up every now and then you you have to unplug and plug back in so your looking at 400-500 ish to update your outdated unit with a more outdated with the benefit of a few features .

Now on the otherhand if your an andriod guy like me then id go for a xtrons system as there relavily cheap and have oemlike look which u can hook uo a reverse camera bluetooth navigation etc youll have to get am item for you bose speaker to work properly although not everyone has issue (£200-250)

Or go premium and get a kenwood or pioneer or whatever suites you need preferabky ome that has apple car play or andriod auto but a 10-15 quid doubke din bezzle from.halfords amd enjoy spotify maps.from.you phone at the ease of touching your Head unit

I am an iPhone user so android systems aren’t really for me. I’d like to keep the car OEM or failing that at least looking OEM. I’m not confident of which aftermarket systems would work with the Bose sound system

Lot's of options for headunits, Pioneer do some good ones that can handle Android Auto and Apple Car play, it switches between them depending on what brand of phone you plug in.
it has the benefit of adding DAB radio (much better sound quality), Bluetooth calls, music streaming and up-to-date maps from whichever provider you prefer.
it may cost a bit more than an old RNSE stereo, but it will work far better and future proof your car for many years to come.
No issues with my 2006 S3 with Bose.

I had the same issue, as a short term solution I bought a FM transmitter that plugs into the cigarette lighter.
I'll use that until the new head unit arrives.
Just pick a radio frequency with nothing on it and you're good to go.

That's exactly what I'm using at the moment! I had it from my first car, still lying around. Still unsure whether to go genuine or aftermarket, thankfully NHN is helping me out

I’d go aftermarket personally, the standard system is almost useless if you’re even remotely used to modern stuff.

Only reason I haven’t is that it’s not my daily so I don’t really need to spend money on a aftermarket unit

If you are going to replace the headunit, it makes sense to go aftermarket, as mentioned above, the RNS-E's are so out of date now, its money down the toilet, unless you are desperate for the OEM look.

I was in a similar boat but have the facelift so got the Aux port and had bluetooth already, so I just ran some cables and stuff and mount my phone with a magnetic mount, plug it via a single cable which chargers and works as an aux input, now I can use my phone for music, sat nav etc without replacing the HU (pics in the what did you do today thread)
