I picked up my new car this morning - CLA 250 Premium Plus in Polar White.
Arrived at the dealer at 9am in my freshly washed and gleaming S3(a credit to its owner :)), and once all the paperwork was done I was driving out in my CLA just after 10am.
The dealer does not accept card payments so I had to pay via bank transfer, which took a little while to get through all the fraud prevention safeguards, but its for my own protection so cant really complain about that.
The CLA feels bigger than the S3, and is actually 9" longer but only about 1" wider.
I thought it would take a bit of getting used to the column mounted gear selector, but it is much easier and quicker to use than the traditional centre console mounted one.
There is so much to learn with this car.....I am actually feeling quite anxious about it because I don't know how to work the multitude of display settings and what they all mean etc. I think there comes a point where you can have too many options and settings.
The key fob is made of metal and plastic....first time I've had a key fob made of metal. Oh and the keyless entry can be turned off quickly and easily via the fob if required.
While at the dealer I was talked through setting up the Mercedes me app on my phone. I have only had a quick look at it so far but there is a hell of a lot that can be done via the app.....unlike the quite frankly useless Audi one(or it was for me anyway).
So far I have only driven 26.5 miles at 41.5 mpg(Confirmed via the app as I sit here :D)....was just taking it easy on way back from dealer.
Horse power at 224 is down quite a bit compared to my S3, but in real world driving I am probably not going to notice much of a difference, particularly as my annual mileage is only around 4000.
Its not all good news though, because I have already booked the car back into the dealer at beginning of July.
When the speed rises above 50mph there is a very annoying and constant whistling sound coming from I assume around the windscreen somewhere, but drop back below this speed and it disappears. The car is quiet and refined around town so I cannot accept this noise whenever I go on a dual carriageway or motorway.....which will be every day going to my work!
The dealer has booked me a courtesy car while they look at the problem.....which should be a formality to confirm, but might be another matter entirely to fix. I have so much faith in these things. :tongueclosed:
On the whole though I am delighted with the car! Ok its not a fire breathing monster but it is super classy IMHO.....and I am getting on a bit now. :D
Oh yeah....the piano black plastic trim around the centre console is going to be a real pain to keep clean. It already had a couple of smudges on it when I got in the car....and this stuff is notorious for scratching even if you look at it the wrong way!
Can anybody recommend a quick and easy way to clean interior piano black trim please? Would a damp microfibre cloth do the trick? I want to get it right first time because you don't get second chances with this stuff.

Have just sorted my Gap insurance on the CLA. I have been using Car2Cover for a few years now and using the unused credit to discount the new policy.
3 years Vehicle Replacement Insurance is £249, so with my credit discount I paid £185.43 today.

I found a handy feature today at Asda when returning to my car in the poring rain with shopping bags in both hands........I remembered reading that some models have the kick your foot under the bumper thing to open the boot so I decided to try it and hoped I didn't end up looking stupid......but sure enough it worked. :relaxed:
My previous cars have had a red reflector on the doors and I always thought it would be better if it actually lit up, and on this car they do just that - both front doors and the boot lid have red warning lights when open. :)

I am no further forward with reading up on things.....and believe me there is a lot to learn, but I have been looking at the app and I am impressed by what you can do. You can lock/unlock doors, windows, sunroof....get notified when your car is unlocked, see where your car is, full trip computer information for most recent journey and overall, tyre pressures, service info etc.
Here is a screenshot of the app home screen.

Looks lovely Ron. Glad you like it. I haven't been through all of the dash displays yet. I think it's a case of sitting on the drive and looking through it.
I have the matt oak look trim now but had the gloss black trim in the c250d. I just used to wipe it gently with a microfibre cloth (one of my better ones ).

@SaraS3 Well funnily enough I spent over an hour sitting in the car in my garage along with the handbook just trying to familiarise myself with all the options and settings. I got some of it but there is still more to learn. :D
Yeah that's the thing with piano black trim....its looks great but attracts dust like a magnet and scratches sooooo......easily!
I used a microfiber very gently and it is looking good for now. :)

@jassyo06 haha......I can't answer that cause I dont know the answer myself. :kissingclosed:
Yeah I was immediately taken by the coupe shape when I first seen it, but am not fussed for the hatchback or even the saloon. Just a pity about the fake exhaust pipes though, which I drew attention to in the showroom.
If anybody knows what to use I would bet it's you.
I'll give them a try. :)

What's the difference between the coupe and the saloon as they both look very similar in shape

They are similar to first glance....exactly the same at the front but the roofline is different and back is completely different.
Identical inside though.
Also I believe the coupe has a wider track and different suspension to the hatchback and saloon.

This video points out the differences....and there are more than I thought.
Different headlights, bonnet and seats. Also the CLA has a shark like nose which I noticed in the showroom and commented on.

The coupe is the better looking version,l knew it had different headlights/drl design as the drl is very similar to the current Ford focus drl design...looks better in black though lol,l saw one in red in a Tescos car park....bright red didnt really suit it....l wish ye all the best with car and it's gadgets ...like you l aint a car gadget man....must be our generation mate and 224 bhp is more than enough for anyone, in the last few months l have been constantly at odds with myself over bhp power,l dont drive fast but like a bit of oomph now and again for overtaking,Jordan and l had a debate about this the other night about me changing cars,he said that S and RS cars and the same for BMW M cars and Merc AMG are all about vanity and that's very very true...and as l get older and wiser vanity plays less of a part in life than it use to do, but **** knows what ill be driving this time next year as l am impulsive in nature and if a car l see gives me that whaow factor even if it's got less power l may go for it..but l couldnt have a car with faux exhausts lol.

Car looks ace pal :icon thumright:

The CLA coupe does look amazing and is one of the best looking cars on the road atm imo.

The 250 AMG is not really wanting for power and is plenty quick enough and the premium pack really adds a touch of luxury on what is already a very premium car doesn't it.

When I stepped inside one of the new A Class cars I was highly impressed at both the high grade materials and look of the cabin in general - it is super modern but really well laid out.

The CLA also benefits from the same bonnet as fitted to my car and it not only adds width to the cars but looks really cool doesn't it.

As for the dash configurations - I was like you initially and quite intimidated by all the customisation and options - but you VERY quickly get used to it, get familiar with it and then start to enjoy playing with all the options.

I'm over the moon with mine and I am sure you will be - Merc has massively upped their game and the new A class certainly bats the new A3 visually based on what we have seen so far and the cabin is light years ahead .... enjoy mate :thumbs up:

Also ... have you tried the "hey mercedes" yet too ?

I thought that would be a gimmick but its really very good - try asking it anything ... change your heater temp, put on the rear demister, play the next track on the media, when is the service due, oil level, change the ambient lighting, programme the sat nav etc etc

Mate my RS3 was 4 years and a pre fl so I’d had my fun with it & it was starting to feel dated - you constantly say how dated the pre fl is lol - The new Mercs (imo) are really good looking cars, extremely well built, use very high end premium materials and the tech is incredible ... the new Audi 3 is hardly breaking the mold and from the early shots was not doing it for me - but the new A class really turned my head. Sitting in the cabin of the new Merc was very Audi-esque & I immediately clicked with it ... like my Audi’s if old. I’m sure the new Audi 3 will be a great car but it’s styling is hardly breaking any ground and the interior is very whacky. I’m not saying I won’t go back to Audi but Merc have seriously upped their game so it’s a 2 horse race for me moving forward.

Funny you should say that because looking out from the drivers seat at the bonnet that's exactly what I thought.....it looks wide and those 2 ridges look pretty cool.
Regarding the dashboard displays I think I am happy with the one it was set to when I picked the car up, cant remember what its called but looks more or less like traditional display. There is a symbol that appears now and again and so far I haven't been able to find what it means in the handbook......it is a blue square with a P inside which appears below and to the right of the rev counter. Any ideas?
Its not Park cause that's in a different place, but speaking of Park I've noticed this car doesn't seem to allow it to be left in Park without the electronic parking brake being applied automatically.
When parking my cars in my garage I have never used the handbrake/EPG, just leave in gear or Park.

P.S. No I haven't tried the Hey Mercedes feature yet. Voice control has never interested me in the past though.

You've deflected every point l made mate...even for Mercedes to hit a purple patch...easily done considering their previous models they still wont beat Audi even at a low ebb even if that where the case...which it aint, all l hear is tech/apps/gizmos.....does not make a good car...l find Mercedes them to be bland externally and chintzy internally,l would go BMW before any Mercedes l aint blinkered....

The VAG group have always been ahead on automotive technology more than any of the other 2 German brands,Audi have consistantly built all their models in every range with the same quality and offering very similar options through the entire range,BMW,Mercedes have just started to do this..just look at the last 1 series and the last A class for example how inferior where the interiors in them over the current A3. the fact is..it's all down tp personal taste...l find Audi's to be more classy looking and they do age very well,BMW are very aggressive and bulky looking,Mercedes have a certain elegance to them well the use to have....it's kinda still there ie the elegance but they've erased all the exterior feature lines in the entire range, their cars now look as if they are suffering from water retention/bloated and that huge 3 pointed star on the front.....is just a bit too much for me....

Well I had to wear a 2020 shirt for a 2020 car. :sunglasses:
Looking forward to the season finally getting underway at the weekend.
I'll be rooting for the black cars. ;)

Regarding the 2 tone red/black interior, it was a no cost option and I am super happy I chose it. :)

But wouldn't it be a boring world @jassyo06 if we all liked/drove the same cars buddy?

Personally I think Audi (& not VAG cars in general) have lost their way a little hence I'm now driving a BMW
But it could be I was ready for a change after 17 years of Audi's ...

That pretty well sums it up for me too.

I’d had Audi’s for 12 years so I think it’s fair to say it would take something special to steer me away.

There’s no denying the new Audi 3 will be a great car - but it’s just a bit too samey for me & im just not sold on that interior.

The Merc gives me something brand new whilst feeling very Audi-esque :icon thumright:

I looked up the on the road list price of that car including metallic paint and it is £45,590, so theres something not right if they want £50k for an already registered car.
I looked through the spec to see if there was anything else added but couldn't find anything.

Wow mate, you really have the Audi tinted sunglasses in BIG time.

Personally, when Audi started giving everyone s line seats as opposed S3 etc, their quality dropped. I am not going to go into this or that is better, but I think they are all cutting corners, so whatever people choose, and buy is up to them.

but you do respond to every anti-Audi comment pal & lately seam to put anybody’s else’s car other than an Audi down ... just saying

I was an avid Audi fan but the new 3 just ain’t cutting it mate, it’s too much of the same thing but I appreciate for many that is appealing. I’m still interested in the brand and they make some cracking cars & all of the RS variants are still very appealing cars so I will check out the final incarnation of the RS3.

You have a stunning S3 atm which is very unique and I wouldn’t be in a hurry to chop that car in. Moving to another S3 from what you have now may not be worth a £50k jump pal ... it may be worth casting the net further or going RS yourself :icon thumright:

Sorry, a bit late in seeing this thread @Ron240
Nice car buddy, congrats mate. Even got the team shirt on for collection lol
Will need to keep an eye out if passing your way :thumbs up:

Sheesh - these lazy Merc owners lol

My X3 has the BM equivalent BH, but don’t tell anyone :whistle2:
Coming down the road yesterday I commented on the BMW in front and the lady in my dash started talking to me lol

@Ron240 Also ... have you tried the "hey mercedes" yet too ?
@Snake Pliskin Well it took me a while to try it but I have now and I'm loving it...especially for making calls. :thumbs up:
I just say "Mercedes" though which has the female voice responding. :)
I eventually figured out after saying "phone" and "call" that "dial" was the best word to use followed by the name. I still need to speak clearly and leave a brief pause between dial and the name for it to work faultlessly first time though.
Yeah I'm loving this voice control thingy now.....which makes me think I should have used it when I had it in the past, but maybe wouldn't have been quite as good. :grinning:
