Massive IT Failure Affects All Audi 2020 A4 vehicles

Hi All, I’m booked into the dealer on 22/06 for a noisy wing mirror. I’m going to try and get the software updated at the same time. Does anyone know what the technical bulletin was and what software versions I should be looking for? I’m going to try and spell it out to them! Cheers Nabeel.

Hi All,

Was contacted last week to book an appointment for a control module update. After two hours the phone rang; It seems that you already had the right software, and there is no update available. :shutup2:
Also; last week I specifically asked which version it was. They explicitly told that the update was necessary, adding to the fury; It seems that your car was delivered with the current version..:rtfm: So; even this dealer doesn’t seem to know which cars have which version number..

Furthermore, let the dealer know about the failing LTE connection. The response; “The car didn’t give a error so we won’t pursue the issue. There are no complaints known about bad LTE connections.. Maybe an update in the future will set this issue straight..”
It won’t take rocket science to realize that the bad LTE connection will result in failing connections with the phone and the app.. But it seems this dealer is more busy with keeping is pocketbook in his pocket, than actually do something for their customers.

So I’m pretty much done for this brand. This will definitely be my first and last Audi.

Had a similar Experience last week, mine was booked in due to Audi Connect telling me there was an update , I called the dealership ahead of this , and they stated no updates . I quoted the TPI Number Audi Connect gave me, they told me it just confirmed the issue and a software update was in the process but not yet available. They told me there was no point brining the car in , so I canceled .

Sorry but wanted to do some proper testing first before having it reviewed ;-). So got the update almost 2 weeks ago, version 3248.
Looked like it was working in the beginning, when i connected the phone to the car after i got it back from the garage it said it has received a route which was send through the app.
Drove like 2k km since an the problems with the MMI restarting/failing during a ride is solved an didn't happen since, even when using Apple Carplay. Though the app isn't working, still... not possible to send routes anymore ever since the first connect after the update, not able to unlock the doors from the app, so still disappointing after having the car almost 7 months but still having issues..
So after all i believe the update did solve a lot of problems but we're still not there yet, waiting for a reply from Audi when there will be a new update....again.

So short update, drove another few weeks an a lot of contact with Audi Netherlands instead of the dealer because they just won't take it serious.
The issue to send routes an to lock/unlock the doors from the app are fixed. But still get asked to switch to the guest user from time to time, also it says there is a map update available (i'm still on 05/19) which isn't downloading/installing, looks indeed like a poor LTE connection to me so it won't download it.
Slowly getting to the point that actually i'm happy with the car an even the MMI is working (more or less), now they only need to fix regular OTA map updates an don't need to switch to guest an login over an over again...

Wow, you dit quite a good job on that, I actually showed the version numbers when I delivered my car, but no dice.. The people working on these cars are getting payed by the minute, so diving deeper in these systems won’t be coming from dealers, but de manufacturer itself..

So after my rant on this forum I thought; screw it. Lets try the main account again, install the app en see what happens. And you know what; It actually seems to work now.
First logged in with MyAudi account in the car. After that was working, made that my main account.
And after that installed the app on the iPhone again. I actually was able to lock and unlock the doors with my iWatch. Which is pretty sweet.

Although, after an hour or 4, I wasn’t able to connect to the car anymore.

I set the main account up with an pin code. In my mind this step may help to prevent switching or having to switch between guest account etc. But this is based on a hunch. Did any of you try this variant? Is account switching still happening when you use a PIN code to your account in the car?

Anyway, today I was able to connect and lock and unlock the car from a distance. So maybe, there is a light of the end of this tunnel..

Still_dre. I have been able to lock the car and unlock, but only for a short period after turning the ignition off. (Also manually unlocking /locking the car seems to sometimes restore connection for a while. )
Will try the pin code and see if it helps, (guessing it could get tiring , entering every time I get in the car ....if that’s how it works ?)

Well about the pin; I would rather put in 4 numbers every time, than my username and password at random. And anyway; for the guest account, you have to tap 3 times if my recollection is right.
1st, guest account, 2nd online disclaimer, and then the other ‘privacy’ screen.

I tried to open and close with my watch today, and it still worked, but that was rather shortly after driving it. Will try to look further into the times when the car loses connection.

I tried setting a pin. It’s not logged me out yet. But connectivity to the car is only available shortly after ignition off , or unlocking / locking with the fob.
I can unlock lock from my watch but only in a very short time period of either of the above. (Almost like the system powers down / sleeps)

Off topic but it downloaded a new European map dB yesterday also.

Hi all.

First time posting on this forum but I have come across this whilst trying to sort out the dreaded MMI issues. Took ddelivery of my Audi A4 Avant Black Edition on the 16th March and all seemed well

First noticed that on a Local User set up that my home address disappeared all of a sudden one day and in the fortnight after, it happened a couple of times. Initially I thought it was something to do with the pairing of a mobile phone as some of my Google searches suggested that the Local User Favorites are linked to the mobile which is connected.

I then installed myaudi thinking this would sort it out. Did this a couple of days ago and the home address is still there which I input from the MMI. I am suffering from the issue that I cannot "send" locations, favorites and set the Work address from the MyAudi app. I can unlock and lock the car from the app and also see all the data downloaded from the car. This seems to work pretty well in fact so no lag which has been reported

I have the 3248 Software version and MMI Software is release-32-9-1928-SNAPSHOT-04.09.2019-13:41:01

Does anyone know if there are later versions of this available yet? I have tried contacting Audi on Facebook today but no response and generally they are pretty useless on there. (They actually told me that a FWD version of the 4.0 TDI would be available at some point when it is actually only quattro available in that engine)

****** frustrating this and thankfully I am not doing the miles at the moment to quickly need to select an address or favorite

Thanks for your help!!!

Same Delivery date, Same Firmware , told no updates yet from Audiconnect.

Well, last Thursday the car once again dropped ‘user has been away from car’. So that pretty much debunks the PIN method. Interestingly: after one or two days the MyAudi App was updated, and without having to put the login requirements in the MMI, the car logged me back on. The app wasn’t even running in my phone, I just got inside started the engine and the app on the phone started. After that I just ticked the account on the MMI and it worked like a charm, at least for now. (I didn’t enter my specifics that Thursday because I wanted to wait.) The phone wasn’t connected via USB, but only via Bluetooth. So that made me think; is the phone app actually the root cause of the login error on the MMI? Maybe that’s te reason that the app still works right after closing the doors etc.
Would it be really just the problem that the communications module will lose power after shutting the car down and there’s some kind of auto shutdown power saving going on?

Haven’t drove much since though, wil have to see in the future how this wil work.

Also received the new map info, and a new message saying that the online licenses were activated. (The download was at a whopping 50-300kb/second..)

So just a short update, got an OTA map update last week.
Or at least it looked likes it, don't know 100% sure if the database has updated but is has changed for sure.
Still have the problem to need to login every day or 2 over an over again but again a little step further...
Anyone else got an update for the map?

I got a map update over LTE, haven’t checked the number though. It gave me speeds of 300-900 kb/s. Its didnt take that long to download so guess it wasn’t more than 100-200MB.

Yesterday I noticed a map update was available on the myAudi homepage. It makes you download more than 21GB.

Anyone know if the difference is that LTE only downloads changes whereas the homepage makes you download the entire map? I assume its the same map no matter which solution I use?

Hi,
just wanted to mention that I'm having the same annoying log-in issue with MMI version 3248.
However I noticed that the best way to get rid of it was just to... wait.
So when I get in the car and it gives me the Welcome screen, I just don't hit next and wait for the screen to change to my navigation screen. Sometimes I will still get the error message, in which case I close it and wait some more... by doing that I didn't have to re-login for almost 2 weeks.
Not ideal, but better than typing your email and password everytime you get in the car :relieved:

are you able to remotely lock / unlock or update the status of the car from the phone app .. say an hour after you have turned the ignition off ?

Not me you are asking but after I was updated to 3248 I can update the app, lock/unlock etc. hours after I left the car. And the day after etc. Seems like that part works with my car now.

I have 3248, i get the login screen every so often but after about an hour remote lock/unlock or vehicle status cannot be obtained...

Same. Called Audi connect again this afternoon. They where insistent there was a fix for this. (2020 A4/A5). Gave me the same tpi number I’ve had before. Sigh
I might try and book it in again.
Weird people on the same firmware are having different experiences. Leads me to think it could be something else. / another module.
I think the vehicle maybe logging me out more than I think. I usually have my phone on me when I get in the vehicle. This may be logging me back in on occasion so not noticing I’ve been logged out.

Checked the map version. After the LTE update I have the same version as you.

But now I put in the USB with the map update I downloaded from the myAudi homepage and something seems to be happening....

...wow this is gonna take forever. 4% finished on 10 minutes. Hope I’m not just Rolling the map back to where it was before the LTE update

I received a couple of days ago exactly the same navigation database update "over the air" with the same software part number as you have. The first update ever over the air since car delivery in october 2019. This morning, after starting the car I was logged off as MyAudi user once again????... This issue is still not solved.

I got this one too, took like more than 40 minutes to install it.
After the download an installation 2020.05 i got another one through myAudi which is again 21 gig....downloading it right now an will install it tomorrow to see what version/difference this one will make.

Wow another one!

Yeah mine took +40 mins too. But seems I have very much the same version as with LTE.

But interesting you had another one, wonder what version that is.

Well, that was fun, or not.... so downloaded the latest version according to the myAudi website, put the USB in the car but it just stated it was older data then the car already has. WTF, why does it says there is new data available then when logged in on the website!

I’ve been paying attention to this option, and it actually works! In case you need to depart quickly to a next appointment and need the navigation to a destination, you can use the steering wheel and the screen in front. Also the music from CarPlay works if you use the phone to select a song. It mostly takes about 10-15 seconds after starting te car. Patience is a thing.

This startup time is still beaten by any other car out there, but still. :)

Oh man, makes zero sense Audi

After updating from USB (which seemed to give me the same map version as earlier with the LTE update) I now have a small icon with a car and a ! in the upper left corner stating my map data are recent. Seems to be there constantly now.

a9f0a9c97d9179ca6376299780d14efe.jpg

Still, the map seems to have the same errors as earlier. For instance a resting place along the highway about an hour from where we live is shown as a place where you can park, eat and refuel....but there is no gas station there so if you’re running very low on gas it can be a not so pleasant surprise...

In the UK at least the quality of updating of the maps is rather 'variable', the latest edition still has the street name where I live incorrect while google maps doesn't make the same mistake.

Hello everyone, I come to you to report that everything works for the opening and closing of doors from MyAudi
My expert Audi product advisor contacted me so that I could update my Audi A4
He told me the TPI
TPI 2059215/1
TPI 2059023/4
My car stopped and turned off at 5.30 p.m. and put in the garage
I was able to contact her at 8:05 p.m. today also open and close it without error message
I hope it will solve your problems too
Sorry for the message i use google translation
Funky

Car was in the dealers yesterday , Software update took a long time so was left overnight . Collected this morning and everything good so far .. (Car also had the starter alternator replaced as part of a recall) March 2020 A4 2.0 BE
Software is now 3281

Fingers Crossed, but all seems well .

I received my 2020 A4 Avant last week, but have been keeping a close eye on this thread prior so I knew I would probably have some issues from day one.

I contacted the Audi Digital Support guys just yesterday to ask if a later software version to 3248 had been released and they told me that was the latest. Based on what you've said though, clearly it isn't!

Is there perhaps a TPI number connected to the 3281 software update? It'd be nice to phone my local dealer and pinpoint straight to the issue rather than someone having to go routing around for it.

Cheers!

Interesting with the new software version. Please keep us posted about any bugs. Very interested in whether your software deals with the MMI re-login issues.

My 3248 version seems to work flawlessly now with the myAudi app but I get that annoying MMI re-login prompt every so often.

Oh btw off topic, but I had issues with the “belt” thats driving the generator. Car had driven less than 2,500 km but it began making a whining sound until it got warm. The dealer grounded my A4 Avant until they could get a replacement belt which unfortunately took 10 days...

However, independently from the belt replacement Audi issued a recall of my car because the generator could cause a fire. Problem is, its for so many cars they dont have enough new units so in the letter they advice owners not to park in garages, underground etc. for now I was just lucky to get mine replaced because the car was already at the dealer.

Anyone else got this recall?

Thanks for that thorpemark1!

So I contacted Northampton Audi yesterday and told them the situation. They punched my reg into their system and it returned no issues / recalls / updates available etc

Told them I had a TPI number for the software issue (got the usual... "I don't know how you got hold of that because TPI numbers should never be passed onto customers...) and although the TPI appeared on their system, because there is no link between that and my vehicle reg, they were unable to do anything from that phone call.

Got told to ring their service bookings team and just get the car booked in for them to diagnose the issues, of which then the software update may get installed.

Dealership have been very good. I had to ask a few times on the phone to Audi connect CS to get a TPi , and they wouldn't state what it refered to . I gave my dealership the TPi and it seems to have resolved my issues ..
This morning can unlock and lock car from phone app and watch app , after leaving it overnight . Not had to log in manually .. Sending and receiving destinations still works.

Sounds promising then!

I've just rang and booked the car in for next Friday (10th July). The woman I spoke to has also put the TPI number down on the booking details, so fingers crossed it'll point them straight to the issue.

Just been called by Audi customer care Netherlands that the login/logout problems with my car should have been solved without any software update.
Apparently they made some adjustments on the server or something which should have solved it. Need to logout the car and app an then login again an it should be ok...sounds promising, keep you guys updated

I just booked my A4 for an update (log out -issue), yes there is update for it dated late june. I had a control module update earlier that fixed other issues but still have the log out-issue. Will let you know what firmware version it updates into and if it fixes everything (like thorpemark1).

:icon thumright: Mine seems to have been spot on since. Software 3281, My mmi software snapshot seems to be dated 22.04.2020 not June. But I suppose release dates could be different. (Media driver also changed versions )

My MY2020 got delivered last week and they allegedly updated it to the latest release. It says 3248. I wonder why they didn’t update it to 3281 if it’s been around for some time??

I’ll give the dealership a bell and see if they can update it as it sounds promising.

I took delivery of a new A4 Black Edition just a little over a week ago and I'm having all of the same problems listed above.

I'm on software version 3248 and the dealer said that was the latest available. I mentioned the TPI number and was told that number doesn't relate to the issues that I'm having.

This is my first Audi, not that impressed with the connect system although the rest of the car is awesome. I hope they sort it soon

You've had a similar experience to myself then by the sounds of it.

I think the way you have to play it is contact your local dealers service bookings team, mention the issues your having with the MMI and get it booked in. Tell the person you're booking in with you know there is a TPI for this issue and get them to write it down on the booking comments.

Mines going in tomorrow, so I can't confirm if software version 3281 will be installed, but keeping my fingers crossed! I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow evening
