Terrifying.
I might as well be using cod liver oil in my car for all the protection I get then.
However did VW get away with supplying a shockingly inadequate oil.

I've read through - but am a bit confused.
I've been putting 5w30 Castrol/Millers in my 1.9 every 5000-6000 miles. I'm assuming the car will be happy with this level of love?

Starting to wonder why people don't have Asda plastered on car's in favour of Castrol, Millers and the like...
..go for branded stuff as I'm a snobcan't tell me supermarket oil, fuel or whatever is fine as it meets "standards" still not using it, each to their own..

Anything 505.01 or 507 will be fine
As a general rule of thumb most 5w40's and 5w30's meet this but just check the back of the container or read online first, personally prefer the former which ironically by definition can not be 507 so this whole it's got to be 507 thing which one person spams in every thread is totally flawed.
Why flawed if I can back it up from multiple sources and that includes information signed off by VW themselves who's oil spec it is ?

Either is fine, regular changes are key.
If you don't plan on changing oil often, don't conduct much spirited driving and don't mind thicker oil 5w30 is fine. Probably find more garages use 5w30 as it's more universal but more enthusiasts want the lowest first number and highest second of which 5w40 is what is suggested by the manufacturer.

A true enthusiast would use the oil with the best oil performance peramiters inc anti wear .
If you want higher anti wear and you have a dpf then Fuchs do a unique C3 racing oil called Fuch Titan Race Pro C3 .

I stand corrected.
I thought the 1.9s were the older more reliable engines. I used to have one in a SEAT Toledo, it went like poo off a shovel.
This is confusing the **** out of me. I also thought the PD engines were the reliable ones? I now have the fear.

I think the 1.9 PDs without the oil pump balance shaft are, better than the 2.0s anyway.
But not as reliable as the old 1.9s, a bit agricultural but live for ever.

The question really is, who waits to 20,000 miles to change their oil?
I changed mine there recently, 4,611 miles. 18 months, 556days to be precise between services, very little miles was sick of the chime/light on the dash so did it anyway

a) its not about long life, it's the spec/grade properties
b) because he's buying it for sub £1.50 per litre
c) changing oil is one of the best, most cost effective maintenance items you can
No brainer if buy it that cheap (and the oil is what it says it is)
I did 4,500 miles there in 18 months and changed my oil. Was £30ish quid.
I'd do it all the time if it was even less
This LL oil to go longer has to be stronger in the first place , of higher quality , higher oil film strength determined by oil basestock groups and additive package concentration .
