Seen this on a few TTRS cars (one with catastrophic consequences)
Camshaft actuator solenoid.

e09bec16d817e4afbee6bddb822f826b.plist

Hope this isn’t a sign they are all going to fail, may be tempted to replace them all.
£80+vat each.

Any symptoms leading up to getting the error code?

Nothing, completely out of the blue, at first I thought it was just the beep you get at cold start.
Error warning on dash so I didn’t fire it, scan revealed the solenoid.

I’ve heard horror stories of the pins being sheared off at speed which is a concern.

What mileage etc?

I just replaced one after getting this error, '18 TTRS on 18k. It came after the car had been stood for a while, recharged the battery and it came up when I started it. Car sounded really crazy too - it was stuck in high-lift. No pin damage when removed so just slapped the replacement on and all is good.

I bought 2 for £40 delivered on German ebay, similar age/mileage so I'lll see how it goes. I wonder if theres any issues with solenoids on the V6T...

I had something similar on my 16 plate RS3. Started car in the morning, short trip to drop the kids off then on restart I got the engine warning light and start/stop deactivated. There was no unusual noise from the engine or hesitation.

Garage diagnosed with code P001400 exhaust camshaft solenoid. Was told it could be several things (some quite expensive) but turned out the solenoid just needed replacing.

23k.

I did have what thought was some duff Momentum from Tesco, car suddenly started running lumpy and cutting out, but now I’m wondering if it was connected to this.......

PFL engines don’t have the Audi valve lift system yours would’ve been a different solenoid.
These actuators are directly behind the Coil pack connectors and operate the variable valve lift.

1 for every cylinder.

Thanks for posting t-1000, useful to know. I'm pretty sure iroz have had a us 2018 plate car in for a rebuild as a result of damage done as dealer wouldn't cover it on a mapped car.
Are the new solenoids a revised part, or any other options aside factory fit available (assuming if they are a weak link a like for like replacement may also fail again...)?

Part number is the same.

I think it’s just one of those things where a part is in a hostile environment and has moving parts / electrical connections and could be susceptible to an odd failure from time to time.

Whether that failure happing at speed is an issue I can’t say, maybe they are designed to fail safely, the US failures don’t seem to suggest that though

For me it would always be swapping to a new OEM part to make sure every thing operates as Audi designed it.

That guy is on Audizine he had the engine replaced recently for 28k.

Interesting point is several broken rocker arms reported so begs the question did they destroy the engine and damage the solenoid in the process, these roller rockers Audi use have been known to let go at high revs.

£28k for a new engine? Might as well buy a whole new car!

I hope this doesn't turn in to a widespread issue and there's a load of people going cap-in-hand to Audi for new engines. Not sure that'll be a smooth journey

Can’t see it being an issue.

Don’t forget a lot of Vag engines run these actuators.
On the 4 cylinder there are actually 2 per cylinder but separate items.
Like below.
So the Daza and V6 etc are unique in using 2 pins for one module......imagine having to buy 10 off

Is it a individual cylinder valve control system or do all move at the same time to adjust all 5 cylinders do you know? if i remember correctly the EA888 just uses magnetic actuators at the end of the cams which seem to work well though do have issues.

EA888 Gen 3 employs singles.

See below. They work on same principle in that they move a pin in and out of the camshaft to slide it across and change lift

Our cars use a double pin for each cylinder so 5 units in total.

Still extremely painful, even in USD!

A base engine is £17100 + vat
Turbo charger is £2450 + vat

Then you'll have the fitting works on top.......

Thing about the Daza block is once you damage the cylinder walls it's pretty much knackered as they are plasma lined, although it could be sleeved if the damage isn't too severe, the issue with having it sleeved is you lose the very slight bore taper that Audi engineered into the block.

I mean, at that point you may as well sleeve, rods, better turbo and shoot for 700+bhp
