My Belated build thread

Have you fitted a jump start terminal under the bonnet , my r32 has battery in the boot and has a positive terminal under the bonnet, think I will try a fit something similar, what size cable did you use?

Yeah from memory it goes, live from fuse block to starter, starter to battery in the boot and ground in the boot for negative. Hmmmm cable size, don’t honestly remember. Pretty big stuff, 50mm2 maybe..... would have to look through my thread, i know I followed Tufftys lead on this from his.

I’ve ordered a r32 jump start terminal with the live wire right back to the boot from a breaker so at least I know the cable will be big enough and should be long enough don’t fancy trying to get in the boot to jump start it my boots usually full , will give me something todo and will get my Andy mac sub fitted and my new alarm siren whilst I’m at it

HAPPY VE DAY EVERYONE.

In all my boredom, not even being furloughed and being a key worker. With nothing else to do, I decided to go about tidying up my engine bay.

1fc28d604115d2ff7cafd38d7b1b83fd.jpeg

This was my engine bay before sorting it out, little bit cluttered, pipework going all over the place, etc.

1f04af9e212c386d1734f9d80eb88c54.jpg

Started off with removing the large ECU relay housing and tucking it in with all the cables and water meth pipework.

29e46d8ccc7abcd28722137515ff53f2.jpg

Then went about sorting out the cables and tidying them, including moving the N249 valve and tucking it out the way. Fitted my R8 oil filler cap.

dacce0a13a1478ed555ec2db3b31b419.jpg

I then fabricated a pair of holders out of wait for it..... good old 15mm copper pipework, my soldering skills are on point thanks to now being qualified to fitting air conditioning which my Oil catch can will be fixed to and my horns as I’ve replaced them and relocated them, tucked out the way behind the air filter. I also drilled out and rivet nut gunned the tops so now I can fit my old battery cover.

755b250acc4da1d538cb6699fafd7731.jpeg

I’ve also changed the header tank cap and washer bottle cap with an OEM Black replacement.

As you can see I’ve re-done my pipework so now I’ve relocated my DV cold side, plumbed back into the TIP.

I’ve also fitted a 63mm charge pipe from creative motorsport, this doesn’t fit perfectly.... I will need to make a lower bracket to keep the pipe more ridged. I intend to paint all the pipework, DV and catch can pipework black and the charge pipe silver. Using high temp paint.

I will also fit some heat wrap around the silicone joiner of the charge pipe to the turbo. This is a Nomex joiner but still I’ll protect it best I can.

That’s all a job for tomorrow and Sunday

The one thing which I was quite concerned about, was the amount of oil that’s sitting in the pipework.....

The car doesn’t smoke at all, doesn’t use oil either, did an oil change about 2000 miles ago and hasn’t used a drop.

Not sure if this is the norm, I do remember when pulling off all my old pipework a couple years ago there was oil sitting in the pipes.

As I've been changing and taking off pipes I have quite a bit of oil aswell..if that makes you feel better. Or maybe we both have the same problem? I was wondering because I was also planning to buy a charge pipe from creations how bad is it?

There is generally always a little oil in the pipes with journal bearing turbos...

Its an issue if the throttle body is drenched though

You have to remember I’m running a AET-380 hybrid turbo, so I’m not 100% if the placement is exactly the same as a standard K04 turbo. But basically it’s further away from the cambelt cover, so it’s slightly offset from the lower clamp bracket. Not a big deal though. Wouldn’t take much to adjust it. The charge pipe also sits sight higher away from the rocker cover, which is actually a good thing as I intend to put some aluminium heat shielding under it tomorrow.

Throttlebody is clean as a whistle thankfully I did check that while I was changing the pipework.

Would I be right in assuming that journal bearing turbos use the oil as a lubricant then?

I’m currently looking at G30-900 something tells me Bill and the boys are gonna be busy next year.

Funny you should sat that, how would it perform on the 2.0 I wonder with that being the lowest of the recommended range, what would you be looking to get from it ?

There’s a chap on YouTube who is doing exactly that, stroker build 2008cc he use to run a GT35 variant and now going to be running the G30-900. Be interesting to see what he gets...

But I would hazard a guess around 700bhp that would be my goal

I intend to get my gearbox strengthened and with diesel 6 speed 02M internals, it’ll be the driveshafts that’ll be sh1tting themselves. Not sure how to get around that at the moment, Qualify LSD will help I guess

You going to be spending big $$, il be swapping my turbo and exhaust manifold out next year if not sooner But get it running 1st so I know if engine going to 5hit itself and was looking at that yesterday, I’m waiting on gas n gears to get back to me about some gearbox work, do that swap and leave it at that

I’ll be using Martin from gas and gears too. I’m on the fence with using monster performance gear sets.... Nick (Prawn) is currently using these in his race car. Rated up to 1000bhp. If I go that route, probably won’t see much change from £3k but if your running big power, you want to be able to use it.

Well, didn’t all go well with my original plan, the paint I ordered didn’t match with the rest of the powder coated stuff, sooooo with some exhaust heat wrap I had laying around I’ve wrapped up my charge pipe. Underneath are several layers on E-Tech XHT silver paint rated to 850c so should help a little with keeping the heat from the turbo and manifold.

I did get some aluminium reinforced self adhesive tape which I wrapped around various pipes and cables to protect it somewhat, can’t really see in my pictures though.

Cheers buddy, it’ll do for now. I have got another little side project on, soon as that’s ready I’ll post a picture up. As far as I’m aware, no one else has done it on the forum.

I think that exhaust wrap looks good might steal the idea.. sorry (not sorry)

I don’t dislike it, I like the colour.... which is something I intend to take further later on in the build. I’ll say no more for now

Doesn’t really reflect heat though, it’s purpose is usually reversed, to prevent radiant heat, but it’s all I had at the time

Nothing as extreme as that mate haha. Synchro has already done that. Just a little “OEM++” some may like it, other may not. It looked good before having it sent off to be painted.

Haha yeah that was Ronans “Syncro” he’s working on something very special right now, I think this was discussed on “what have you done today” thread. 2.5 5 cylinder build. A lot of hard work involved, mountains of problem solving, a route I was very much considering. But the cost in doing it outweighed the stroker build.

Didn’t manage to do much today, was felling trees over at the bosses gaff. But did manage to start putting together my direct port injection setup.... courtesy of Bruce Morris from CoolingMist.

7ad1a56108efd87fe5f62168125bf735.jpg

Cut up a bit of 14mm x 5mm steel flat bar and realised that where I was mounting the manifold the cables for the injectors on the fuel rail was going to get in the way, perfect opportunity to do a little wire tucking.

392b784a6fdbf8c6346ea5524b31060b.jpg

Looks much better with the cables out the way and the fuel rail on show. I will get some conduit to cover the cables to give them some protection later on.

dcf3efcfb050eaf94b9aff0488e33624.jpg

All bolted up, it’s going to be tight with the pipework from the manifold to the injectors but the pipe is quite flexible. Should be able to do it nice and neat.

69808329ce81355402dd8d287290d418.jpg

Hopefully get the rest installed professionally in a couple weeks time and get the car checked over and mapped.

I’m the meantime I’ll go about painting it all up ready - XHT Gloss Black.

Been toying around with this OEM++ engine cover, had to hack it about to get it to fit properly, plus my coil packs being taller doesn’t let it sit down as much as I would like it to......

That said I have just acquired a AGN Rocker cover, so this engine cover will be no use at all

Ignore the lack of the air box, I’m still working on getting that to fit and I’ll be getting that charge pipe sprayed up ASAP. That exhaust wrap is dusty as sh1t!!! Wouldn’t recommend anyone else do it.

Thanks mate, took a bit of finding. I was going to spray the 5V and Turbo in red. Make it look more similar to the original engine cover.

But my next build will have the AGN rocker cover.

I'm trying to remember what wheels you've fitted recently.....Rota's? I wanted a set of Rota's on my impreza like the s202's came with in that dusky bronze, if that's the colour your aiming for I think it'll work really well on a dark car as it's subtle & pleasing on the eye

Yeah they are Rota G-Force wheels mate. That’s kind of the bronze I’m going to go for. My plans are to do my wheels, a half roll cage once I’ve got one, rocker cover, inlet manifold..... keep it all the same, just trying to decide if to do the charge pipe and intake pipe the same or might be too much.
