Does anyone have a healthy running b6 tdi with more miles than mine (246k+)? I suspect there is but would like to see.
Mine is a 2004 tdi (100 AVB). It's had is a recon turbo 85k/9 years ago engine-wise, but nothing else documented other than the usual servicing, but history sketchy after first owner so not sure.

Wow that really is great! Gives me a lot of hope for mine doing a lot more!! Any other facts about your car are welcome!

Turbo has been changed, alternator has been changed, and at least 2 injectors has been refurbished..... Secret is werry easy, how to make these engines live long.... Change the oil at least after 10.000 not like recommended after 15k or with the LL oil Ower 25k.... Use allows only 505.01 or 507.00 specified oil..... Nothing else, and don't buy cheap junk oil.... Only known oil brends, like castrol, Mobil, Valvoline, or audi vw original oil, don't use the car cold, let it even in summer time vork for at least one minute... Warm it up in winter's and so one..... And yes.... Amputate the Egr valve as fast as possible, it kills your engine.... Carbon deposited are building up in jour intake, valves and piston rings even more then usuall, because of egr, and oil becomes dark way more faster than without it.... I blank my egr 2 years ago and can say that, I can not find eny minuses that I don't have it, changed new thermostat, and the car got the job temperature fast..... (if in your country you can not pass the inspection without egr valve then blanket with thin metal plate(exhaust manifold side pipe, what goes from exhaust to egr made it your self or buy from ebay, amazon or car parts shop)..... Before car inspection take the blanking plate out and put in the original, and after inspection blanked it again, that will help you economy time, and nerves... But if in jour country jou can pass the car inspection like in my then buy a blanking set and say goodbye to that forever! These engines good maintained easely hits 500.000km reading and up without big problems

Absolutely agree about the EGR valve. Mines a B7 BRE, but I also did it to a previous SEAT Leon 1.9tdi. Much easier to do in a 1.9 too.
It is an MOT failure not to have it fitted, can't remember if it's under a plastic shroud on the 1.9, but it is on the 2.0l and can't be seen. Just need the EML removing from the dash display.
Removing it also gives an ideal entry hole into the turbo for a Mr Muscle clean, every 6k service.
An analogy I once read of the EGR is its the equivalent of a race horse eating its own poo.

Yes disable the egr , so simple , with engine off remove egr ( metal hat ) vac line and plug with bolt the vac line , this disables the egr and it remains closed .

Enjoy the earlier turbo spool as all the exhaust gasses are used to spool it .

And engine oil cleaner for longer , if you suck out the oil cooler below the oil filter housing . Topside vacuume oil extraction is King and easy .

There's no black oil in both my dervs .

Blank is optional and will stop the egr feed tube from filling the egr feed tube.
A slip in 1.5mm blank is ideal and is invisible for MOT .

Make sure the engine top cover rubber is present and covering the egr metal actuator hat for mot .

Eml doesn't cause limp mode or poor running but is mot failure so some software adjustment is required .

Older B6 haven't the egr monitored by the ecu.

Thermostat is crucial on these , new housing and do CTS whilst drained down too , all cheap parts .

Then there's the famous Mr Muscle VNT turbo cleaning method !

Oil - 507.00 is the 'stronger', longer lasting , higher quality one .

Nothing wrong with cheaper non approved 'meets or exceeds the requirements of...' oil specs are stringent in this country will definitely be American standards ACEA and API and if things are not what they should be we have VLS .

I've used lots of Tetrosyl produced 507.00 , they make for ECP and their Triple QX , G Force , Carlube Triple R , and the major supermarkets so we are talking very high volume . Asda has given me some bargain oil when the manager has had a bump on the head.

Change oil & filter every 6 months , it's cheap , camshaft kit , not as..

Thanks for the advice guys. So these b6 tdis definitely get an eml light when egr blocked or removed? What if I plug the vac line with a screw all year (very easy and reversible), but take it out to let the egr function for mot (I have a basic scanner to remove the light).?? Is that a good idea?

It's the simplest method to do. I just don't remember getting an EML on my 1.9. It have been an even more simply actuated EGR on that though.
(I had a Toledo not a Leon).

Yes plug and play for mot .

Bottom right of build sticker .

OGE - no eml

OGZ - eml

Great! So if I use a screw or little bolt and plug the vac line going into the top hat / flying saucer on the top then reattach it, I'm done? Invisible for mot. I'm not clued up on these things so need it spelling out! When took the rubber big hose off to inspect the soot inside the egr the flap is already open is that how it should be?

Normal egr.

Plug pipe and secure out of way , hat remains open .

Eml can take a few days .

OGZ ?

I see. How do I find the code, on the interior car boot sticker? The egr rubber shroud part of the engine cover has long gone, they must be like gold dust! Ha. Will have to reverse the mod for mot day.

That's exactly the reason + a leaking top egr feed pipe to egr two flange gasket , I'm done with it .

A boost pipe blew for the second time 5 years apart , you know the stipid 2 lugs and clip design , black smoke out the back and so the VNT gets coated and sticks causing over boost limp mode .

Not good when overtaking !

These Pd engines are great, check this Skoda out, it's done 433,000 miles.

Yes I saw the vid a while ago it's great! Nice to see it got that far with the egr feeding it its own poo too lol. Although the Skoda in the vid is not a PD (AGR code)
Actually they also presented a PD Audi b6 with 540k (also with egr still connected) :

I can't see a Euro 6 getting that far , egr going like a jack hammer all the time giving the dpf alot of work and the lovely bore wash of cylinders with diesel stripping away lubrication also getting into the crankcase oil causing bearing damage .

This is why people modify them like how your suggesting to modify ours, certainly wouldn't tar all Euro 6 car's with the same brush.

So I leave the top hat like this and firmly plug the vac line that came off and tuck it away?

So if i plug the vac pipe as above on my 2004 1.9 tdi AVF and the eml light comes on if i simply reverse the procedure will the eml go off again ?

Yes , I do remember people saying just that .

Thankfully it's not a overly sensitive system to begin with as it can take a few days for the eml to appear in the first place.

Wow, lovin this. I keep telling the Mrs these cars are good when she pesters me to buy a new car.
It doesn't help that it went into limp mode on her at work yesterday :-( it's done this before & after some diesel turbo cleaner & high revs it seemed to fix it.. guessing the turbo is a bit clogged?

After watching the above vid, my egr valve is leaking oil and making a bit of a mess now too..
Also, have the ESP light on intermittently.. has been for years now, so i'm taking advantage of the extended MOT!! currently.
I have toyed with the idea of pulling the egr vac pipe, but as mines a 54 plate I understand i'll have a error light on & don't fancy that along with the esp!

So it does have it's issues & I'm reluctant to spend too much on the old beast, but equally reluctant to spend big money on a 'modern' car
From reading this thread my 175k miles isn't all that high then lol

I do change the oil using Quantum Longlife 3 507.00 oil yearly (8-10kmiles) and use genuine filter.
I guess the problems with the a4 is when you get front suspension problems that gets expensive doesn't it.

You've got the right idea , I was going to sell mine till it's non VAG
replacement spent more time being repaired more than any other .

Worth the spend on the old faithful .

You don't have to go genuine millions , it will be Mann , since my two other car inserts purchased , Mann is looking 3rd rate against Hengst and Bosch .

If you don't want to tackle your EGR valve undo the connection pipe and get Mr Muscle into your turbo to clean it (Look for it being done to an A3 on YouTube). The VVT vanes will be clogged with carbon goo, especially if your wife doesn't do big miles.

If you don't fancy tackling your EGR valve you really need to disconnect the inlet pipe to the turbo and do a Mr Muscle clean (video on YouTube doing an A3). Your turbo vanes will be clogged with carbon goo, bringing on the limp mode if your wife only does short distances.
I do mine every 6k regardless, with each service.

Well did the EGR vac line mod and it's running fine, perky and smooth. Check engine light came on within half an hour and reads as 19586 on my cheap scanner. Looked it up to double check and it is indeed the EGR malfunction code. So I can ignore this as doing no harm, and my engine is no longer breathing in its own poo?

Totally so. I just don't understand why more people don't disable the EGR valve, the engine can only benefit.

Now you just need to do the Mr Muscle clean regularly. Of your turbo obviously, does it have other uses?

Yes when I can be bothered haha, but luckily I have no sticky vane symptoms with the turbo so might just wait and see if I ever do? Turbo itself has only done 85k and now I've disabled the egr it might be ok for a while longer? My coolant system is puzzling me more but I'll start a new thread.

What's your

What's your take on 2T?
I've been using it for a while. Recently got some cetane booster too, but as yet untried.

Good stuff JASO FB really makes a difference on older stuff as you won't feel the smoother difference with later 4 pot devs with twin Lanchester balancer shafts.

It halved my mot smoke opacity test from 2.00 to 1.00 before the new thermostat lowered it further , I have more than several years worth of readings .

2T acts as a Cetane booster on it's own , it did well against some actual marketed Cetane boosters in a test ,
( can't find the dam test ) .

Was given 5L of 2-EHN so I make up 40ml 2-EHN and 200ml of 2T in used 250ml Redex bottles .

Okay so if you take the vac pipe off and the eml light comes on you know there’s no cause for concern.
BUT. there is ! Your driving along with the light on but you don’t know if another fault should occur perhaps serious

There's not alot it can tell you that you wouldn't already know if a fault arose .

Every single fault I already knew except for a thermostat and something else in 7. 5 years .
One could regularly scan .

It's not like a modern car where the dashboard is Christmas .

just scan it with vagcom and it will tell you

Other serious faults would either cause limp mode or I'd otherwise be aware of a problem. Ideally I'll get the egr deleted from the ecu so there's no light anyway obviously.

I'm not entirely sure if VCDS can remove the EGR light or not, but great if it does.
Then I would delete (I already have) the valve completely. There was the replacement delete pipe on Facebay for £15 brand new this morning. I think mine was around £60.

You can only do egr adaption with VCDS this turns the operational egr right down , along with a holed blank , but not as good .
