Fitting an Airtec Front Mount Intercooler?

Just read the fitting instructions as I was keen to see where they put the PAS cooler. They cut the crash bar in half.

where did you see that bit , it says just mount above the core.

pic shows it above the crash bar.

I think i'll email them for clarification before I still messing around with it.

I didn’t fancy cutting the crash bar or relocating anything. That’s why I went with uprated SMIC’s. I also want my car to look as close to stock as possible. Trying to build a bit of a sleeper

Yep sounds like a plan, I went with the JHM as it wasn't that large and was supposed to be an easy no mod fit, I wont be happy if that is not the case now.

Better still i'm going pull it all out of the box and see what the instruction say, why didn't I think of that before ..lol

Ok chap's just off to the garage for a rummage, will be back shortly with info.

Back again, and according to the indestructions no mods are required to the bumper nor crash bar, phew that's a load of my mind now and I may even have a go this week in fitting it, well work permitting .

Yes, fully understandable Ricky.
I had a very helpful conversation with the guys at JHM recently and outlined what I had planned and power etc I was hoping to gain along with parts I plan on using.
They advised that it would be fine as going too large may not allways be beneficial with the B7 tfsi, there is another size upfrom this one which is a mid way between the airtech and the one I have , but JHM didn't really feel I needed it unless I was going way over the 400bhp mark.
So I have been guided by them really on size.

Finally got around to fitting mine today.

AWE tuning FMIC.

I can confirm that no modification of the crash bar was required at all. She's a big old unit.

This was an option when I was in the market for one but opted for the airtec just for the fact nearly a 3rd of this one is covered by the crash bar, the sheer size of it should still be more than enough for cooling but generally felt it could of done with a custom crash bar to fully utilise it if going for big power.

Still unsure on my colour option though i do sometimes wish I went with silver

Yeah some of it is covered. But once you see it side by side with the original side mounts though there are no worries. Power steering cooler relocation was easy enough too.

Was one of the first parts I managed to get off of ebay (brand new in box) about 3 years ago.

Colour doesn't really matter, they'll all be full of dead flys soon, haha.

I was surprised at the size difference, saying that the both together are bigger than sti's so goes to show there decent enough size from stock but minuscule compared to the big front mounts.

I say we all post back after summer see who's collected the most flies.

A friend of mine had a front mount on a Golf GTI mark 4 that got punctured by a stone while him and another friend were doing some ‘spirited’ country road driving.

Was always worried about putting a front mount on after that.

Don’t think that will be a problem on the b7 though as it’s tucked behind the bumper nicely. On the Golf it was hanging out the front.

I hope you chaps with large FMIC's have a PCV catch tank setup installed with those big coolers, with those fitted and BHP increases you will be getting even more oil residue issues and associated problems unless you have a means of draining oil build up from the IC.
OEM coolers are easy to drain and its not such an issue draining them if you don't have a catch tank in place, but the big ones , well you have been warned.

Funny that you should mention that.

Today's job.

Just to put things into perspective chaps.
If you fit a part pcv delete you wont stop the oil residue problem , you will reduce it to a more manageable level but you will still get IC's full of mucky oil residue eventually with a standard tune engine, up the output and the problem just increases rapidly.
Here, this is what happens with a part pcv delete and catch tank, which is a why you need an effective full delete solution.
Imagine what your IC core will be like after 12 months exposure to this condition , these pics were only after 6 months.

I was expecting a lot of oil in my intercoolers. Had maybe 50ml in the passenger side, next to nothing in the driver side.

I do mine approx 6 monthly now, it used to be the same amount of build up in the IC's etc before I fitted the pcv setup and as I have improved the setup it reduced accordingly.
On last check they were dry and oil free with my final setup.

When I removed the stock intercoolers I had a little bit dribble out each side not a massive amount just used a microfibre cloth to clean it up it was next to nothing, that's about 14-15 months and about 15k miles since rebuild so I was surprised at how little there was but totally agree pcv catch can set up is defiantly on the cards in the near future as the end goal is around 350hp so a good 130hp over stock it may well produce a lot more than it does now.

Just having a read through this as thinking of doing this myself
Does the power steering cooler need to be moved out the way as it’s such a lump?
Only I have seen one on ECS that they give you a new cooler with the kit and this is repositioned!?

My awe tuning intercooler came with a power steering cooler relocation. Wasn't too difficult to do. Just moved it to one side. Even managed to fit it with the original hoses.

Not sure on the ecs one but the airtec just comes with a clip and bolt which you just use to bolt the oem one to the bottom of the intercooler itself, i also like the ecs stuff but for me i liked the crash bar that comes with the airtec and its a big unit as well definitely capable of huge power

You bend the PAS cooler out the way with the airtec one, it's a bit crude.

I bought (and probably still have somewhere) a later A6 PAS cooler which is both longer and mounts to the bottom of the airtec intercooler. A nicer solution than twisting the original.

Airtec is usually on Fords so there used to being on piles of sh**e so that's classed as a perfectly fine way to do it in Ford land lol.

Not all fords are tat Ricky, just most.
I've had a few myself..lol

Not a fan of them at all Rob, I'm a Vauxhall guy more than Ford, Calibra's, Cavalier, nova's ect are my cup of tea, loved my Calibra would love another, also prefer the newer Vauxhalls over Fords, one thing we will agree on is yes I bet you have had a few lol, for the record I don't hate them for a specific reason or think there bad cars as most are great cars (more the older ones 80's 90's era) but my personal opinion why I like Vauxhalls more probably has something to do with my past that's to deep to get into on a forum haha
