What have you done to your A4 b6 today?

There's been some talk of where to install additional gauges. Personally, I think A pillar and air vent gauges take away from the OEM finish, let alone the instrument cluster blocking ones.

I thought I'd share my chosen oil pressure gauge location down in the change drawer by the driver's right knee.

It's a great choice as it maintains, complements even, the OEM finish, is right next to the fuse box to run a live, and also directly underneath the hole in the firewall through the ECU box to run the sender wire. The readout is easily read through the steering wheel when driving.

View attachment 193140

How does it read the oil pressure? I thought the oil switch on the b6 worked by setting the oil light on with low pressure, not an actual pressure reading.

Yes stevey -the switch activates at sub 20 (I think it is) oil pressure. Below that and it throws a light. Therefore oil pressure data doesn't exist (which is why you can't read it in VCDS). The switch is just "is pressure above 20 psi yes/no"

Nearly all electronic gauges come with two components -the gauge itself, and a "sender" which is about the size of the gauge again which you install on the AUX port on your oil filter housing. You need to run a wire from the sender (which creates and sends oil pressure data) to the gauge. You also need to earth the sender. A live wire to the gauge and that's you done.

I feel your pain, hit a rock on the way home. I dont seem to have anything but problems

Ouch! that looks somewhat flat, won't be using that one again!
I hate rocks in the road, tractors have got so wide that they constantly catch the banks in Devon which often pulls large rocks out into the road and that is quite a pain when the Octy VRS is so low that anything larger than a small Tangerine is a major obstacle :scared2:

Fitted these 18” beauties today. Can’t decide what colour to paint the callipers now that they are much more visible.. suggestions welcome. Not red though

The ONLY colour is Red I'm afraid. It should be law......

I'm with RED aswell if they are Brembo 18z's or similar , oem calipers are probably better in gunmetal or black really as the caliper material and design doesn't seem to suit some colours, but hey personal choice.

How about black calipers ,
With the subtle white AUDI & RED sport logo or even the sline caliper decals On ebay sets of 6 ... 3 sizes to choose from. Would finish them off nicely ...

Along with clearing some fault codes and reconnecting some dodging wiring I decided to add some subtlety to my newly acquired S4...

Leaving these sizeable tin cans to find a new home!

Will be adding something more of an in-between at some point. Possibly some RS4 oval pipes which will involve some custom work with the valance...

Fitted new coolant temp sensor, but must need a new thermostat as still takes ages to warm up . Also found three broken wires under the rubber boot by the driver's door hinge. Oh well it explains sudden loss of some interior electrics.

Finally got around to fitting an armrest to the S4, have one in the B7 A4 and can't be without it now!

So, no going back at this point...

And now it's in. I'm happy with it, pending a new front latch and deciding whether to get the cover trimmed to match the 'silver' seats or stay black :/
I think the black goes well with the black console etc.

My a4 avant b6 2,5v6 Quattro sport, from standard I got her, I’ve purchased and refurbed a set of 19” Rs4 alloys, stage 1 map, mahoooosive air intake and 3inch exhaust cat back but want the whole lot doing now. EBC front and rear drilled and groove disc brakes, Brembo pads and bonnet raise kit. Quattro badges replaced and upgraded and a few other cheeky mods, driver not included

Wow that's a lot to get done in a day! :grimacing::laughing:
Looking smart though!

Cheers mate, shame the others are tucked so far in, but they still look better and the end result will be even better when I get around to it! :thumbs up:

Fixed my driver's door wiring with a £20 look repair kit I found and it did it perfectly! Some are £60 for a kit or £145 for full genuine loom. I was a bit sceptical why it was third of the price of others like it but it came with spare wires to insert where needed so no problem at all with it. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-A4-...RNESS-REPAIR-LOOM-LH-RH-51277117/362788036320
Quite happy with a nice permanent repair for £20 and couple of hours stripping it out, cutting off the broken wires, connecting up the new loom to the old with butt connectors/heat shrinking, wrapping back up and refitting.
Now have working central locking, remote key, electric windows and mirrors - ALL were dead! Had 3 wires broken off completely and another cracked badly. Sorry photos are rubbish.

Issue with temp gauge , intermittent. Would warm to 90, then drop to cold in blink of an eye. Then minutes later fly back to 90. Could stay, or drop at anytime. Knew obviously not a coolant issue, elec side. Could be gauge or sensor. Little google later, the sensor is very common.
t4W87Utl.jpg

Bstard of a job at back of engine, however now the gauge works as should.

Worn parking sensor switch, doing my head in as other than that, minimal wear. Unfortunately only one i could find for now is for L/H/D. But its far easier on my brain for now.

Flat on wrong side, but least not worn through

Lastly, 4 new boots. Decided to try the continental premium contact 6 out, had goodyear on previous. I dont do too many miles, so should last a good few years , even if wear quick. The reviews seem favourable and better lasting than the sport. These are the cross over of contact and sport.

Also rear wiper was stripped, new arm(had to cut old off) fitted in first week. New side light bulbs also fitted, new aero wipers fitted up front.

Thats about it, other than air con service. Fresh 500g back in and flaps reset(blowing slightly warmer on passenger vent).

Cheers

It's a shame you didn't consult us first then we could of suggested better oil , air filter and pollen filter .

It's a shame you didn't consult us first then we could of suggested better oil , air filter and pollen filter .
I did a fair bit of research, pollen filter wise, whats up with the one i have? Its OE blue print Oil wise, i know of better oils, but as i plan on changing every 3k miles, no real point. Some of the recommended oils also are not VW spec(502/505) which made me hesitant. Air filter wise, i know K and N are love/hate(maybe more of the latter). But i have fitted K and N for 25yrs and zero issue. Issues tend to happen when people over oil them, then of course contaminate MAF.
Please advise away, what would you recommend for the said , cheers, always happy to learn:icon thumright:

It's not the over oiling it's the amount of extra dust they let pass , quite logical really , to be more free flowing the material has to be more open structure.
All for 1 bhp...

So stock air filter , it's a big size so no restriction .

Pollen , only one to buy as it filters , NOx , ozone and diesel particulates .
FreciousPlus

Oil , there's a top VW universal high quality oil , 504.00 507.00 that out performs all the rest , that Fuchs is only 502.00 505.01 and not even the slightly better 502.00 505.01 .
There's a massive difference .

cool cheers, screen shot the info for next time. Reason I did not go for the 504/507(used that in the Touareg) is the 5/30. I wanted to use 5/40 instead to help oil use and help the cold start chain rattle. It’s worked so far in the last 600+ miles. 1-2 seconds is now under a second. Not used any oil in the miles driven so far. It was also used previous (5/40). Which are both recommended in manual. Going to change oil every 6 months/3k miles anyway. Will try one of those cabin filters , presume there is a test/review with the info on how much better ?. I plan on changing that every 12 months to keep on top. Cheers for info, defo food for thought. A lot of searching seemed to come back 5/40 to help chain. Although granted to 5/30 should tension quicker, but maybe drain quicker to. I have read some even using 60 nano oil. Any opinion on this? Thanks again :)

Yes thicker oils definitely help with oil consumption and chain rattle .

60 grade even if Nano is extreme .

No data on pollen but the only one to claim .

A better readily available 5W40 manufacturer spec for you would be MB229.5 , VW 502.00 505.00 is ancient and poor .

Fair enough, will look more into the oil side, might even give this a whirl next time for ease(with oil filter up top, saves getting under and messing about). Will have to see how much i can get out though!
H481fFIl.jpg

Yes read plenty on K n N filters, never had an issue in over 25yrs. First car fiesta turbo, then sapphire cosworth, back in the mid 90's. Pretty much every car bar one has had K and N panels, inc more recent subaru WRX and Touareg. Never ever had an issue, always wipe any surplus oils, never had engine troubles. I inspect every 6 months, clean out etc. When i changed it on the b6, there was plenty of bits in the box. So will check and compare, as i hoovered it all out. If any evidence of crap getting through, will swap out. But this i have always done anyway, never anything untoward.

Thanks again, appreciate:icon thumright: my wallet thanks you to:whistle2:. :)

Help me out, give me a couple of oils to look into buying please. Ideally want to stay away from castrol and read mixed reports on mobil 1. Then i will try 10L of it next time i change oil.
Thats good to know, someone in work swears by them to. Saves having to buy a crush washer and hopefully less mess than last time!. My 10L container was overwhelmed and my drive now has rainbows lol. Luckily a bucket was at hand, i never expected the waterfall of oil!. People often exagerate, in this case they were not haha.

Cheers

Ok cool, i normally order from opie and the last oil was only £8 more for 5L(so £16). Always been a little dubious with supermarket oils(granted as long as meet specs should be fine). I will check the oils out next time im at a tesco or asda, see whats what. Next oil change which is only 2k off, will try some 229.5. I will still change frequent though as its paper oil filter which can break down in the longer duration, the newer oil can last. I am a little overkill with maintenance though, i admit that. Thanks again gaz.
