So I purchased a 2009 A4 b8 Avant 2.0tdi, towards the end of Jan this year.
First few months of the honeymoon was great.......
First time I've been out in over 2 weeks, to get the family shop in.
And that's where it ends.
The rear wiper fluid doesn't work, but instead dumps the fluid inside the boot.
Clutch judder in 1st, and second when changing down a gear. And even worse in reverse.
And both driver and off side rear doors only open from the inside!
Having 3 children, two of which are under 4, this a real pain, the doors.......and come to think of it the kid's as well!
To say I'm gutted is an understatement.
My main concern is the clutch judder, as I'm sure this is the DMF and I feel it's going to be expensive to fix!?
I got out the car, thinking I should have got a pre 2000 estate, rather than listen to the wife about getting a newer..ish car. This is my first post 2000 car.

Any words of wisdom or next steps?
 
Might also have an inferior oil pump drive too .

B5 and B6 are reliability legends .

There we go, older is sometimes better!
I'm going to see what I can salvage back from the garage I purchased it from and take it from there.
 
All cars will have issues at some point, so don't write it off quite yet. The rear wash wipe is straight forward. Open the trim panel in the boot/Avant area on the right. The washer pipe runs along here and can disconnect. Use a little super glue or nylon zip tie if you're worried about a disconnect in the future. It could also be wiper motor. The brass pipe in the Valeo unit shears and dumps fluid onto the motor. Easy fix.

The doors could be broken cable, dodgy solenoid, actuator, etc. Strip out the interior door trim for a look. If you have access to VCDS then you can potentially pinpoint the problem.

No experience of clutch judder. Once the lockdown is removed go to a trusted garage for an assessment.

Echo Gazwould's build quality on the B5 and B6 cars. That said, they had shocking halogen projector headlights (once you've tried xenon or LED as a comparison), go through suspension top arms and rear coil springs at a rate of knots and once they rust at the wings, and and behind the door lower moldings it's goodnight Vienna.

Thanks for the reply and useful tip for the rear washer and doors.
When I've bought a 20 year old car, I expect some work to be done, and have no issues about it, but maybe I was expecting a bit too much for something newer, well in my eyes anyway.
Anyone have experience of the clutch judder?

For the doors try slamming them a few times. Put the window down, open from the inside, slam it shut, repeat 5/10 times. There is a plastic clip inside the handle which comes unhooked, and this process reseats it. There is a proper fix but this works for now.

Clutch judder seems pretty common on here, many just put up with it as I do. Garage said new clutch so I’m putting it off.

Thanks for the door advice. I'll give this a go. As for the clutch judder, I'll see how this goes and maybe get it looked at after the lockdown is finally lifted.

How long has yours been juddering for?
 
It’s been juddering for 18 months. Sometimes its minor or not noticeable. Gets much worse when the clutch is used a lot like driving in city traffic. My cars done just over 100k.

A tiny bit of judder is okish. It's the dual mass clutch doing its best to compensate the engine output. It will eventually get worse as the clutch wears and springs deform. On my old B6 the clucth started slipping at 270k km and the judder became really strong. Taking off was awful. Replacement cost me 700€. The new clutch then felt smooth for 10k then a bit of judder appeared but nothing serious. My new 3.0 B8 has a bit of judder too but I'm still uncertain whether is it the clutch or the central driveshaft support. I'll address that at some point in the future.

Wiper just trace the path & test at each point backwards until leak found, replace relevant part.

Door locks probably need replacing, but as said remove cards check connecting levers, but they do go.

Clutch sounds worn, probably time to replace.

I thought as much about the clutch. I suppose if the clutch needs replacing, so does the DMF.
I take it, it's going to cost about a grand!

About a grand all in for a decent matched dual mass and clutch/ release bearing combo plus labour yes.

9 times out of 10 the door locks need replacing. I've done 3 of mine so far.

I had the same issue with my clutch and flywheel. It was like it for around 2 years then it started rattling so had to change it. I was able to get the parts for £700 with new gearbox oil. Labour is the killer I got quoted £800 just for the labour so I done it myself on the drive. Its a pig of a job took me 16 hours. The gearbox is probably the heaviest one I've come across. Next time ill pay the £800 I think.

Fair play, taking taking that job on, although if I had no kid's, I'd give it ago.... maybe?

I used my local independent garage. Iirc 2yrs maybe? Everything fine. Like Night and day once done. Lifetime guarantee on the parts. Was considering getting rid of the car it was driving me mad. Perfect once done

Any 11 year old car on 140k is going to have issues there's no 2 ways about that.

All the issues you've stated are common problems, but most are all DIY and pretty easy to sort with a decent spanner set.

Wiper motor has been discussed above and is a cheap and easy fix if your half decent with the spanners.

Judder is very common, either put up with it or change the clutch and DMF, £800 - £1000 supplied and fitted and your good for another 100K at least.

Doors locks are really common, just YouTube search it loads of how to vids and it's cheap to fix.

If it's not also had the following done I would expect it will need it soon.

Rear shocks leaking £50 DIY change

Aux belt tensioner and clutch pulley on alternator £80 all in DIY change

Engine temp running cool (lower than 90) new thermostat £25 DIY change

Front control arms replacement (usually a creak under slow movement gives it away) £600 for a Meyle HD kit and 4 wheel alignment, DIY change again.

Keep your eye on inner front wings, I've fitted mudguards and stoneguards as they are prone to rust as well.

As @feva said, I was just thinking getting rid, but the positive vibes on here have made me realise, it's worth doing.
Luckily all the belts and pumps changed.

Would like to thank everyone who replied with advice, appreciate it.

As soon as we're able to get out, I'll look at getting the clutch done.

Oh and why on earth was a glovebox light an extra with the light pack??

"My glovebox light was removed as part of the recall on the aux heater fire issue. Keen to refit it, so will follow this.

story was the damper on the glovebox was breaking and leaving the light on all the time. The wiring was overheating and damaging the insulation to the heavy wires to the aux heater leading to fire risk. The recall removed and replaced the wire harness and also removed the light.

My damper link was broken but just reglued it with epoxy and seems to holding fine. The issue was the damper was very stiff. Lube was not the solution, ended washing it in water."

I retrofitted a LED glovebox light. Its an easy job especially since the switch is already there. The guide in that post is pretty good.

Did you fit LEDs to the rest of the interior lights?
 
If it's done 140k on that clutch and dmf that's good going.

If you got if from a garage let them sort it email them so you have a paper trail with times and dates buddy.

Definitely I just bought a 9 year old bmw and had a oil leak phone them up and they sorted it at a garage where I live as I went 250miles for the car


How long you had the car ?

We have the same car audi a4 2.0 tdi sline 2012 model had it nearly 3 years it's been faultless ( new tyres brakes and servicing obviously) been a brilliant car most reliable car I've owned dont write yours off just yet.

With my car

I use good fuel ( shell or BP)

Good quality oil

No long life services ( 10k max )

I really do love driving it, so comfortable, responsive and fairly quick, but most of all, it eats up all the family items, when we eventually can go away again.

Interesting to note about the brand of fuel. Not something I've considered before.

Everyone is different but it's just something I do with all my cars.
