Well just thought I’d say it, it’s here and we all need to take extra care. Keep those hands washed and keep social distance! Enough said.

On the other side of things it still hasn’t stopped me buying parts and thinking of new things for my car etc.

Hope everyone else is in the same frame of mind on here but at the same time stay clean and stay safe.

3213 deaths in China and a population of 1.4bn, whilst it ain't great I'm not sure why all the fuss with this one vs almost zero re seasonal flu, swine flu, bird flu, SARS, MARS etc etc.

Yes I fully understand and hear you. I think there’s a lot more to it but not getting into it all haha. Again though there’s a lot of people that are not taking things to seriously. People have loved ones that can and could be affected my son included in that.

So yes I hear what you say but one person to me is my life !!!

We went all this time avoiding the subject and boom somebody mentions it in our little bubble....

Yeah. It's crazy.
Worrying times.
I have ordered my 78 year old mother to self quarantine, she is high risk.
I do her shopping etc, other than that, there is only guidelines to follow.
My wife is obsessed by it, I blame the media
I honestly don't know anyone that has died yet or being rubber stamped as a carrier.
However, yes we need to be vigilant, but is it a new plague?
I suspect not, but common sense always prevails.
Petrol pumps don't get washed or money.
Be safe out there.

Hahaha. Media is media they take advantage of anything.

At the end of the day most people will be fine but the ones that are at risk will be worried and I understand why. It’s worrying times for them but it’s us that needs to help keep things ok.

Wow this is a pretty terrible thread, not the first post but generally where it is going. 350 daily are dying in Italy, it’s slowly progressing to similar in Spain, most EU countries quarantined including where I am, 70% of over 75yr olds are hospitalised on average and then you have people who are asking what the fuss is. It coming to you at a slower rate but now schools are closed, London to be locked down. Just prey it doesn’t get as bad as Italy. My friend, a doctor, is currently having to choose which patients she allows to live or die due to NHS shortages.

oh and on top of all this, the British economy is up the shitter! Just wait for all the closures and unemployment to rise soon...

No loo rolls in Tesco I can cope with, but:-
Holiday in Devon and Dorset cancelled.
Holiday in Belgium, France, Germany and Holland cancelled.
Bowls matches for the season cancelled and they've changed the code on the gate so I cannot get in.
Finally no white free range eggs in Waitrose.
What is life coming to?

I'm far more worried about panic buying, short supply of food, crash in the economy and the chaos/crime that would follow, and the authoritarian measures the government will take than the virus itself.

Please remind the elderly and vulnerable to be more aware. There was some cases of scumbags going round to elderly and vulnerable people’s houses and offering to help them with shopping and stuff. They took money and bank cards/details and did a runner. This is a new low!!

Totally agree and all vulnerable people should stay indoors with support from others. The hype on this is off the scale though imho when the context is most won't even catch it and those that do will recover.

I agree, but the problem is that no one can know for sure that they will be OK, reports apparently coming out of France, Italy and Belgium of 30-50 year olds with serious complications. May possibly be due to ibuprofen, who knows.
I'm mid 30s and think I'd be OK, but tbh I'd rather not tempt fate by catching it and seeing what happens! Also I've got a wife and kids to support, if I lived alone it would probably be a different story.
If as many of us as possible can avoid catching this would be the best scenario, which is what the government(s) are trying to achieve.
Keep safe all

My family have been in self isolation since the weekend. Currently working from home. I'm very fortunate that I can do that. My wife has had to cancel all her bootcamps. My youngest daughter cant work or attend college now. My eldest daughter we had to rescue from Bristol since her uni has shut. Her boyfriend who lives with us also can not work now. My eldest is high risk due to previous lung resection surgery, hence why we are in isolation.
There are already confirmed cases of corona in our village. Friends have lost their jobs. Other friends businesses have had everything cancelled. Its an absolute disaster.
However, it not as bad here as it is in places like spain where they are talking about 40 further days of complete lockdown. I'm guessing the same will happen here eventually.

Without dramatising it even more, I think most people should start to watch or read up about events in the EU that are happening right now before commenting. Iv realised that Sky news and BBC only really give an overview of the UK, which is fine cos that’s where they are based, but it doesn’t really give the population a clear view of what is possibly to come. Euronews is available online for free and is very good. I would say that your best way to prepare is to watch the main headlines later today and see what is really happening. It’s eye opening and is not being covered in the UK.

Most people have it here now, no one is being tested because the number are so many. People only hospitalised are being counted. For anyone that has asthma then do not worry too much. I do and have had a really tight chest for the past 2 weeks as have others that actually don’t have asthma. Blue inhaler releves me, allows me to breath easily. Lots of fruit and veg to help get vitamins down and walks when can be done in the fresh air.

You know. I have friends on facebook who are hysterical over this. "They're going to be piling the bodies up on the street"

So when I pointed out that up to 17,000 deaths in the uk each year are caused by the Flue. They then quote that the death toll of Corona virus in the UK is estimated to be 34 x Flue deaths. So roughly 578,000 people will die ????????

And as you say, China. Population of 1.4b and only 3213 deaths. Yet the UK will have hundreds of thousands of deaths? And we are a lot cleaner than China is.

But I have found that the same people in hysterics over Corona Virus, are the exact same people in Hysterics over Brexit and Climate change. And I noticed most of them were Corbyn supporters too. It must be terrible going through life being terrified of everything.

My GF is a painter and decorator, so we need to be ultra careful, as being a woman decorator, a lot of her customers are elderly. But she's had (touch wood) no cancellations as yet. Every one of her customers so far has said they're not that bothered, and when your times up it's up.

Why are you comparing a totalitarian dictatorship government to the UK? It’s relatively easy to lockdown China and stop the stem of the flow of Covid-19. Look to Italy when you try compare a country to the UK.

Also, it has nothing to do with being clean.

PS. I’m a Tory, Remainer, and a realist just incase you need to categorise any more.

I wasn't comparing anything. Just an observation that the people in hysterics over this, are the same people who were in hysterics over Brexit and climate change.

Nobody knows what is going to happen and I think the main damage will be economic. Top tip(even for normal life without the current crisis): Sit down and work out what you would do if made redundant tomorrow or your income reduces and act accordingly. Have an emergency fund to tide you over, have an up to date CV, have a plan made up before hand as its hard when the s**t goes down to think clearly. See where you spend your money and try and reduce your recurring expenses. Do you need that expensive Sky package etc.

I am going to be made redundant at some point soon, most of my colleagues already have been. Even if I can get a new job in my sector it wont be for the same money. The whole experience has been a real wake up call and I thought I was prepared.

On a positive note petrol has been cheap.

We were all sent home on Tuesday (17th) until at least Monday 30th, they told us to phone a crisis hotline on Fri 27th to see what was going on, I've just had a message saying that they are extending the lockdown until at least the 6th April! Luckily I will be getting paid as normal, but what about the people and businesses that live week to week, if they don't work they don't get paid. My mate owns a coach company and the majority of his work is taking the school kids too and from school and day trips out...they have all been canceled, his drivers still need paying and his coaches still need paying for!!! Worrying times.

I then received this email which made me smile (I'll not hold my breath on going, late June):

Lol

Why have they been made redundant? Because of Corona Virus? Surely putting everyone on sick pay, and claiming it back off the government would be the best way forward, rather than making them redundant. As they'd then have to pay redundancy money.

Plus, if all these job losses are because of Corona virus, then once this blows over, those jobs will be filled again. Still not nice for those to lose their jobs, just when they need the money the most.

I'm in construction, and due to Brexit uncertainty there was a slowdown in work. And now this. If the UK does go into lock down, and as I'm self employed (no help from government) I could be without income for months. But I feel I am one of the lucky ones, as I've saved over the years, so I can go quite a while before things get tight.

Me a 74-year old (75 next month, maybe, lol) with few health issues other than a tad of high-blood pressure - and now having to polish 3-Audi cars daily just for the exercise...

And (my) rs3copilot with 5/3-years (60+ cycles) of chemotherapy (and a recent 5-day radio therapy cycle) behind her (and now we are told blood group A are more susceptible, and she is, c'mon!!!!) and still needing 3-hospital visits EVERY week for ongoing chemotherapy treatment, lol! :yahoo:

Fortunately we've already had superb support from several locals AND one offer of support from Stafford Audi! WOW!!!!

Yes, Stafford Audi offering us self-isolation support! How MEGA is that! :thumbs up: Sure brought a few tears did that one... :friends:

Two choices:
1) You cancel and lose your deposit.
2) Pay the rest and if they cancel your options are *get a refund from them or move the holiday, if no joy that way *claim off your holiday insurance, *claim off ATOL, *Claim off your credit card that you paid with, section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act means the card company's equally liable with the retailer/supplier if something goes wrong.

If you do pay and things get better, at least you still have your holiday in place!

A friend of mine is getting married in Cyprus in October, it's costing well over £10k and he's been paying so much off each month, he's already had it cancelled once due to Thomas Cook going bust, he re booked with Jet2....maybe something's telling him not to get married lol.

Totally agree with this - Travel Insurance is last point of call and possibly won't cover depending on the wording, but the tour operator/travel agent should be giving you your money back if you cannot travel.

Do not cancel it yet as you will lose out, unfortunately you will have to pay the balance, unless you are being made redundant then you should be able to claim under travel insurance for that

Hopefully you will get to go - I've got a holiday booked to USA in early May - Celebrating my 50th last week and my wife's in April but I don't think I'm going to get lucky with that one tbh

Hate to say this chaps, but it's all our own doing.
It's not nice I agree and very sad to see so many deaths , but it is happening now and will happen again.
Humans are supposed to be the supreme beings on this planet, look at what've done to it , not that clever are we.
We pretty well eat everything on the planet , we kill pretty well everything including ourselves , we are are destroying ourselves and our whole planet through our own doing, something had to snap and this is just another step towards total wipeout .

Our planet will recover in time , but only after humans have long gone.

sorry to be so blunt but it's staring us all in the face and we still cant see what's happening.

anyway, that's enough of that.
Panic buying , why do people do it when its just not needed, just another selfish act we humans inflict on each other.
Government should have stepped in long ago to put in place controls to ensure everyone had access to food and supplies, instead they missed the boat again and look at what's happening.
My local sainsbury's today is just letting people clear the shelves at 7.00am in the morning and by 9.00am they are bare, no control over quanties at all.
In contrast morrisons is well stocked and very well organised , limits on items yes but its fine and plenty to go around.

A lot of big companies are making huge profits out of others misery.

winge over .

Well coronavirus had two very contrasting impacts on me today.

In the morning, the refractive lens exchange procedures (think of it as cataract surgery without having cataracts to start with - it's solely for vision correction purposes) I had scheduled at Moorfields Hospital (left eye this coming Monday, right eye the Monday after) was cancelled. I now wait with bated breath for my £9,000 to be refunded - fingers crossed tightly on that one.

In the afternoon, my employer - which has several times over the past couple of years threatened redundancy only to keep giving us stays of execution - announced today that due to the current crisis, my department will no longer close at the end of June this year but will now stay open with no threat of redundancy at least until the end of March next year. I was already working four days a week at home to save them desk space, so staying at home the extra day hasn't meant much of an adjustment. But am I and my colleagues the only people in the country whose employment prospects have improved due to coronavirus?!

Meanwhile, in my local area, people generally are behaving as normal; i.e. mostly selfish and ignorant. Thankfully, I have been socially distancing myself for many years, being a grumpy old man, so again not much adjustment required.
