Machine polish

Need some advice. I had my car machine polished by the body shop after a small bump repair. Rather than just having the painted panels done I opted to have the whole car done. I payed £360 for six hours work. The car is shiny but hasn't had any effect on the swirls or marring under bright sunlight or torch light that comes with incorrect wash procedures. My question is should a machine polish remove these defect or am I expecting too much. I've watched enough youtube videos to believe I'm correct depending on the compound used. Is £360 too much just for a machine polish just to make it superficially shinier without removing the defects?

If you've still got swirls you've definitely paid too much. If the swirls were gone, maybe not.
I charge less than that at my unit.

Car under light is still as it went in. Just shiny. Wasnt exactly dull when it went in just bent. Will need too see where we go from here.

You'd need to get a pic in the sun or summat mate to show the swirls.
I bet white details would charge around that for an enhancement detail and if it is just swirls, they'd definitely be done.

Unfortunately it's back at the accident repair due to a multitude of other issue on pick up day. Will see how its resolved. Body shop manager has said they will speak with the guy who polished it

I'd be annoyed if swirls were still there. Swirls come out first. Also you can use a harsher pad/polish with the Audi's and not have to worry so much about buffer trails so swirls should definitely be gone.

The price you've paid is more than I was quoted by a local detailer for a stage 1 polish which he said would remove all but the deepest of scratches.

Based on what you paid I'd have expected the majority of the swirls to have been remove as @RS03_SEN said and has shown.

Just spoke to Richard at Ford accident repair. He said that they polished it and thought it looked great. He went on a out light spectrum and angled and the like. Paint colours and paint types. Luckily the sun came out at the opportune moment and I said look there. You could see the marring and hazing, like spiders webs all over the car. He agreed he saw what I was looking at. He said he couldn't comment on what the car has looked like over the past couple of years I've had it. Just that they polished it and thought theyde done a good job. He's going to speak to the manager and get a way ahead. Whether I take it elsewhere or they re do the polish. He said hed done detailing in the past and this is not what had done. He mentioned wet sanding. I said that's not what I'm on about. The car is not bad enough to need that. Also they're waiting to hear back about the two alloys that were butchered when refurbed. To see if they can be replaced. TBC.

Wet sanding for swirls ha!
I worked with a guy who had an accident in his car and ford "fixed" it. Ended up with a replacement car in the end because they couldn't get it right.
His was more smashed than yours was though I'd imagine.

Price seems quite high, especially given the workmanship. I'd push for some of that back and take it elsewhere personally as they don't sound overly experienced in detailing.

Buy your own machine polisher like a das 6 and some polish and pads and do it yourself.
Very rewarding.
Time consuming, but rewarding.
And a bit late now but would have saved you a fair few quid

Detailing a car is a lot different to painting and repairing beaten up panels, if in doubt get it to a detailer.

I would expect swirls would have been reduced for stage one (and £360). Give them a chance to correct but state if it is not up to standard that you will expect some ££ back. No need to wet sand considering the current condition as it isn't required.

Audi paint is notoriously hard to correct so I’m told, a stage one would make a slight improvement giving it a nice clearly look but would probably only get rid of about 60% of the lighter swirls.

That's about spot on for what I saw on Friday evening when I went to see the car after he'd started compounding it. Was better but not 100%.
