So for my next car I've been looking primarily at 8P S3's and for some reason the cost of insurance on an auto is around £500-800 more. For manual, the cheapest I've found is £1,300 without a black box and this is with Admiral, which is pretty good as I am 20 years old and have held my license for two and a half years with one year NCD and live in a good area. Whereas with an S-Tronic S3 of the same spec and price it costs around £1,800 with Admiral, again being the cheapest. I should add my father is on the policy quotes as a named driver, and he has had his licence for over 25 years. I have tried multiple comparison sites and going direct to a few companies. Also, when I phoned my current insurer and asked about dashcams they said that cost of the quote didn't change which I thought was a bit odd.

Am I just doomed and have to go with a manual, or should I wait until I'm over 21 before considering an S3? Just curious about anything I could be overlooking or any advice anyone has, thanks.

Quick update, just got a quote from my current insurer (Elephant) and an auto S3 would increase my insurance by £1000 and a manual only increases by £300 so I think I'll be going for a manual as this is the cheapest option.

Hi.
Please feel free to give us a try for either vehicle you're looking at if you wish.
Regards,
Dan.

I'll give it a go, thanks!
Not that these things are comparable but I had an auto S3 when I was 19, insurance not comparable as I switched cars on the policy for final 5 months. When I renewed with 2 years NCD and aged 20 I believe the quote was about £1,900. Switching to the S5 saved me £1000 (still aged 20 at the time).

That's crazy, I would have thought the S5 would have cost astronomically more than an S3, was it an 8P S3?

8V! 2017 S3 Saloon I think it's mainly to do with frequency of S3 thefts and doubt there are many S5 owners in my age bracket as well.

I wouldn’t worry about that pricing, when I was 19 I got my manual S3 (I wanted manual, it’s just better) and I paid 2.3k for insurance, that was with 2 years ncb, renewal is in 3 weeks, hoping the extra year of ncb helps me

I'd find it hard to justify £2.3k just for insurance to be honest, it seems extreme.

Yeah I winced at the thought of it but there’s no real way around it if you want a fast car at a young age

We have all had to pay high insurance in order to gain a good driving record and gain a good no claims discount.
I was paying £1200 in the 80's for an Xr3i as a young driver, my metro was even £500 because it was a first car. Have just renewed a 385 bhp C43 for £227 with 20 years ncb (although they only count 9 I think)
It's something we have all had to do. One good thing about getting older, cheaper car insurance
You will be saying the same thing to a younger chap in years to come.

£1200 for an XR3i ? Ouch... In '83 I was 19 and paying £440 for a 3.1 Capri... Ok it was only TPF&T (that was a lot cheaper back then) and not Fully Comp but affordable, especially considering I was only getting 17mpg.... hahaha
And yet, even with only one single claim in all my 39 years of driving (and yes, this only counts as 9+) it has always stayed around this price.... The magic ages of 21, then 25 and then 50, never made the slightest difference.... I felt conned... hahaha
