So my current S3 has its 4th birthday later this year and (in a whisper so it doesn't hear) it’s time for a change. Question is what to get.

1) A new S3, assuming that is the S is launched alongside the new A model later this year.

2) An S4 / S5, slight bigger would be good, family growing up and all that. But their Diesels! kinda feel every conversation will have to start with a justification.

3) RS4 / 5 out of my price range.

4) A slower 4 / 5, if I want to stick with Quattro then it’s a Diesel again. Oh and slower, maybe not.

Any advice? Budget upto £45k, not too fussed on body shape coupe / hatch etc and prefer European. S3 speed

New S4 or the new S5 face lift derv or not are very very nice and extremely fast if not slightly faster than the 310 ps S3 ....if you do 10k miles per annum or more it's a no brainer
But a half decent specced new S3 will cost ya £45k easily with hee haw discount to be had that's assuming you can get one in time for changing l expect them to be in showrooms late September

For £45,000 you have a good choice of cars. Similar to the S3, is the A35 AMG. But for me, the ride was too crashy, and while others rave about the dashboard, I felt after a few hours, if looked and felt cheap.

BMW M135i, and you get AWD now. But such an ugly car.

Can't see the S3 being launched from new. Maybe 6-12 months later. And as jassyo06 says, discounts will not be available.

If you go nearly new, then I think you open yourself up to some seriously good cars. Deals are out there, as dealers struggle to sell. I got a pre-registered BMW X3 M40i with just a ridiculous discount.

"Old" S5s would come under £45k if you want petrol. Love my B9 S5 and has a decent balance of performance and practicality, although the coupe's back seats are *****, Sportback would be better for convenience.

If wanting a sideways change your budget will get you a brand new top trim spec premium plus CLA 35 Coupe.
It has the same power and very similar performance as your S3 together with AWD, but all wrapped up in a sleek 4 door coupe body style.
There is currently a wait for factory ordered vehicles, so timing could work in your favour.

Shhhh.....don't tell Jassy I suggested a Mercedes. :innocent:

I don't see the appeal of the CLA. Back end looks too low, making the car (especially in Yellow) look like an upside down Banana. Personally, I think the Saloon looks the best shape out of all 3 A35 AMG shapes. But all personal choices

I am with Jassy on this one.....S4 or S5. For me it would be the S4, the S5 is too big. Plus in Canada the S4 comes with a V6 petrol engine

Agreed....and as I've always said the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same things. :D
Just out of curiosity do you like the body style of the CLS?

You could keep your car longer and reduce your carbon footprint while doing so? Greta would be proud of you.

No. Looks like an upturned Banana too.

CLA is a non starter and the A35 AMG is :puke2:. the X box dash is just a monstrous slab of bad design. The C series (C63) and others is a different story

Greta wants you to walk from now on, while flying round the world to tell you.

You will probably appreciate this was the answer I was expecting....otherwise I would have taken issue with it. :D

PCP it mate.....
I know....I could easily afford it that way.
It's just that I seem to have a mental block when it comes to PCP, and prefer to throw my money away all in one large lump sum. :D

As an aside I read a long term report on the BMW 330I ....two things I liked, the dash is very well done and even though it has a touch screen, that screen can also be controlled via the I Drive knob, which to me makes a lot of sense, whilst driving. Audi, are you listening?

Very good : https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classi...upe&body-type=Hatchback&year-from=2018&page=1

That car seems extremely cheap!!
I haven't went into it in detail but there surely has to be a reason why?
My S3 is the same age and is worth more than that. :openmouth:
It's got a 'category s' marker recorded against it hence the low price.

So... That's anyone's choice...Still doesn't change the fact that been registered on an insurance claim reduces it's market value.

worth checking out and ask seller ..
If an insurance company thinks it''s not economically worth repairing on such a new car it's not had something as simple as a car park type shunt...Clearly someone has taken time and effort to repair it (good or bad?) but it won't ever be sold as an immaculate showroom condition car. If you were to buy the car and keep it till you run it to the ground then yes probably a good buy, but if you were to only keep it for a couple of years I reckon the older it gets then the more difficult it would be to sell on unless you reduce it's value considerably.

Category S = Structural damage. It’s definitely more than a car park knock. The paint appears to have had different grades of turf polish used on different panels, and yet the exhaust tips look like they’ve never ever ever seen a cleaning rag in their supposedly short life. Alarm bells are already ringing, and I’ve only seen it on a phone screen... Swipe left, and move on...
