Hi All,

Hoping somebody will be able to help me with an issue I seem to have with my PD130. Since I bought it I’ve noticed excessive pressure from the valve cover, as you can see on the video.

Turns out the breather is a sealed unit and the rocker cover is £145 from TPS which I’d rather not change unnecessarily. I’ve taken the breather pipe off, there is air and some oil vapour passing but nowhere near as much as what’s coming out of the oiler filler? The engine running doesn’t seem to be affected by doing either of these. I took the rocker cover off last week to try and gain access to the breather but failed, so refitted it with a new gasket.. the hole up to the breather diaphragm was clear. I don’t mind spending the money on the new rocker cover if I know that’s the issue, but I’ve spent a lot of money on the car on various things and can’t be careless with it. I’ve been told to run it till it dies but I’m not in it to do that, I want to get another 200k out of it.. we all know they are capable.

I changed my oil filler cap at the same time as it was blowing a small amount of oil. I don’t know if it’s coincidence but ever since every couple of days is struggling to start now, coughs and splutters into life and I’m not sure if I’m not suffocating the engine so when I’m home I will be swapping the cap back I think.

Any PD experts or anybody had experience with this before? From what I’ve read online it could be worn piston rings, I hope this isn’t the case. The engine has done 218k with full Audi ‘long life’ History on a mixture of what seems to be 5W-30 and 5W-40 oils. It’s now on the correct 5W-40 oil at 5k intervals with me.

Any help appreciated,

Matt.

But not the best PD oil !

What do you say is best? I’ve got my A4 and the girlfriends Golf running the 5W-40 now.

TPS were quite happy for me to take the usual Longlife 5W-30 away, only when I challenged they agreed that 5W-40 is suitable.. it was that or 0W-30 their system showed.

My engine is an AVF. Is there anything online that defines the difference between the engine codes? I’m led to believe there are a few significant differences between the few there are.

I was quite happy with the condition of the camshaft when I got the cover off, no flat spotting that I could see and seems to have worn well for 218k.

It's all about oil basestock groups and additive package concentration .

If you want to keep it that way .

Because people are stupid , then bandwagon stupid advice .

This was a long opionated topic which I had the pleasure of myth busting .

Two oils of the exactly the same quality the thicker grade will protect more .

But they aren't the same quality and the viscosity under Castrol's production was a miniscule 1 centiStoke difference meaning we had a thick 30 and thin 40 !

So if you were to pick the ‘best’ oil for the job, would you go for the Quantum Longlife 3? The price of the Quantum oil at TPS is just staggering, last lot I got was £11+VAT for 5 litres while it was on offer. Never costs me more than £20 for 5L and a filter of the 5W-40, makes 5000 mile changes on the old girl a certain for that money.

I’m running Millers 5W-30 Nanodrive in my RS3 because of good reviews and it seems to run cooler on it.

Yes QLL3 is the cheapest approved when on oil bonanza .

PM me when next one is on .

I've no issue with using non approved either and have also been using for several years Asda's version made by Tetrosyl .

Manager must of bumped his head .

To be honest I don't so a single 1,9tdi PD130 engine without blow by... I have the same PD130 avf like yours, and my wife has the same engine in passat b5 and all they have the pressure in the walve cover...... If you changed the ccv valve membrane(the same in the walve cover) could do the trick, but I am driving like that(with the pressure in valve cover) 3rd year and no problems so far..... My engine doesn't consume oil and starts in cold conditions without problems, power is good... Pulls like a train.... Hmmmm
