Oil Level

So I decded to check my oil level on my 1.4tfsi cod and bearing in mind that its parked on a slight incline the oil is 3/4 on the dipstick. This is the first time i check the oil level since owning the car and its due for another service in a couple of months. Is this about right? I know that too much is far worse than too little.

I would recoomend you first get the engine warm (take for a drive of a good few miles), then find a flat surface (garage forecouts usually are), wait a couple fo miutes and then check the level again. That's your reference. Check it again in a couple of weeks. If it's not gone down all's ok, and I wouldn't worry unless you'd rather top it up a little 'just in case'.

Checking it on an incline, there's no way of telling how much of a false reading you'll be getting...

It's not my place to be holier than thou but I reckon I'd be checking my oil level once a month, or whenever you fill up with petrol and there isn't a queue of other punters behind you.

The time it takes to fill up and go inside to pay is just about the right length of time for warm oil to drain back into the sump, and most garage forecourts are level.

And for what it's worth, I'd far rather rely on a MkI eyeball than an oil level sensor and a warning light.

Also something to bear in mind, if you check it when warm then say the day after you check again when it’s cold you’ll have a different reading, so keep your level checking to a consistent temp if you catch my drift.

I usually do it after a run when it’s parked up in the garage after 10/15 mins.

That is fine. Don't worry too much about it as long as it's in the upper half of MAX/MIN You could add 200-300ml but I wouldn't worry.

Remember it's not that MIN is too little, it just indicates that now would be a good idea to top up with like 0.5l of oil.

Well I spooked myself alittle. i have done another check today. So warmed the engine slightly on idle for 5 mins then let cool for 3 mins then check oil and its seemed to be just on the bottom? tried a few times and every time at the bottom. im thinking that cannot be right ? im a creating static using an old tshirt on the dipstick or something. im talking about the mesh bit of the stick not sticking to the oil. if that makes sense. there is oil on the other side at the right level but not on the mesh side. hope that makes sense. i dont want to put oil in if it dont need it nor do i want to starve the car of oil. but its literly at the bottom of the stick ??? Please advise guys ?

u shouldn't have warmed up the engine, just measure the oil after the car has been sitting for a few hours. when you come home from work today park on level ground and measure the oil after an hour or so... it can't be too long of a wait but you can measure too early after stopping, before all the oil had a chance to drip down...

It's really not that difficult!

As per the manual what you experience is most likely because the engine oil is too thick to run down fast enough to get the correct reading. 5min idle is not enough for the car to be warm (oil more than 60 degrees).

This is what I do:
Level car, cold engine (not been driven for an hour or more), dip stick up, wipe off, dip stick down, dip stick up, read. As simple as that (again, this is how I do it).

It's like religion for some but it's really not that complicated. An easy reply to a thread like this would always be (Red The F*cking Manual)

I followed these instructions from page 215 as advised. Warmed Engine on idle and allow to cool for 2 mins and check.

Warming a cold engine on idle for 5 minutes or so, will not get you up to operating oil temperature (100C) and will result in faulty readings. Either, as previously advised take the car for at least a 15 minute spin or a stone cold engine and measure on a flat surface. I often check my oil level on a supermarket's parking area after I have done my shopping, as that will allow the hot oil to flow back into the sump.

Not only is the car park absolutely level (as you'd expect at a premium supermarket), but I find I get much more reliable results than at Tesco.

Much more reliable.

I tried Morrisons once. It was horrid. The car park wasn't flat, it was full of ancient Vauxhalls with greasy windows and half-eaten Whoppers all over the floor, never mind the hundreds of spherical women in leggings and ten bob trainers waddling round bellowing at their children and smoking cigs.

Simply dreadful.

The far corner of our Morrisons car park at night used to be ideal for dipping the oil. I was never lucky enough to find a young lady that ate more than half a Whopper. Much better than letting it go cold and finishing it off later by myself though.
