Later this year, as my S3 saloon nears its sixth birthday, I'm considering trading up to a new RS3 saloon.

I've been wondering if anyone might know how the depreciation of the S3 and the RS3 compare, i.e. would a new RS3 hold its price better than another new S3 over, say, a five to six year period?

My current car is a manual and is well loaded with extras. I'm aware that the RS3 is only available as an automatic, but I guess I'd just have to learn how to drive it, what with the stop/start and hill start assist facilities, etc. (Frankly I don't know how an auto works in practice, e.g. What's to stop it creeping forward if you take your foot off the brake pedal? That's just one thought that came to mind the other day!)

The parking brake. You can apply it while the car is in gear and it won't move until you press the accelerator.

Hill hold if optioned will stop the car creeping forward too.

To the OP - DSG in the RS3 is an awesome gearbox, I'd only ever driven manual up to then and now will likely never return to manual.

Owned an S3 and traded up to the RS3 Saloon. RS cars in general hold their money well but of course it all depends on a number of variables i.e. annual mileage, spec, condition, etc.

The RS3 was number 9 in WhatCar’s top 10 least deprecating cars of 2018. I would say an RS model would always have a better residual value over an S.

I don't really comprehend the need for hill hold? My car doesn't have it but it won't roll back before my foot has moved from brake pedal to accelerator.

Look at the price differnece between the 8P S3 VS 8P RS3, about 10k price gap for the same age car, crazy...

Seeing a RS-anything is always a spectacle, S cars are getting very common, so obviously rarity will help it keep its value.

If I was you I’d go for a facelift pre ppf RS3, sure you’ll find a great deal on a ex demo or short term lease car

IMHO There are bigger discounts to be had on S products. Hill Hold is generally standard these days. Hatchbacks tend to hold value better than saloons. I do not think 8V RS is in production for much longer. I would NEVER buy a short term lease or Demo RS product.... will almost certainly have been rogered within an inch of its life.

As long as it’s not been ragged from cold I wouldn’t worry, RS cars are meant to be driven!
Any RS driven on pcp could’ve been ragged to death, if you get extended warranty and know you’re handing it back after 3/4 years why would you feel the need to look after it?
Imo 6-12 months of the unknown is better than 13-48 months of unknown

The added functionality over standard is that when you come to a stop the green brake symbol comes up and you can remove your foot from the brake pedal until it's time to move of without any other interaction, means you can hover over the accelerator and plant it as you feel necessary, the standard holds the car a few seconds before automatically releasing so enough for you to move from brake to accelerator , having had both versions full hill hold assist is something I use all the time

Hill hold is standard and it’ll give you 2seconds or so of holding the car when letting off the brake pedal on an incline.

Auto hold will hold all four calipers on when you let go of the brake pedal at a full stop.

Auto hold has a button to switch it off if required.

RS3 is similar to any other car re depreciation although pre 19 plate non OPF cars may be more desirable.

One less thing to remember + a tiny cost option. Surely only the cheapest amongst us don't option it ;)

TX.

PS creeping forward is the thing, not rolling back.

So, all hill hold does is save you from having to move your finger to the parking brake button? Orrrrr, you could just keep your foot on the brake pedal and not have to lift a finger?

I would prefer no months of unknown.

I used to think the same but honestly, once you've had it, it’s nice. You can stretch your legs when in traffic etc. A small but useful feature.

First HH we had was on a 2014 S3, I think it was an £80 option... never looked back. Now standard kit I believe and love it.

Or just put it into neutral which is what I do if I know i will be sat for a while.
Like others I was an absolute manual man on my S3, I now have my first DSG and when not on a blat I prefer D to using my manual (particularly when the car and gearbox is cold.............car takes maybe 5miles to heat the engine oil but maybe 10-15miles and more to heat the gearbox oil). It is nice to cruise about and let the gearbox do its thing.
If on a blat then I do still just prefer the manual for the interaction but in manual mode the DSG comes mighty close, no auto upchanges/no kickdown so very similar. If the gearbox is your only concern don't be concerned, amazing piece of tech.

HHA makes for a far smoother and no faff getaway. My first S3 8v was a 2014 manual (just resold WX14PZA) Lovely car and like you was not sure about S tronic but actually living with it I much prefer it now. Sadly first and reverse are close together on manual S3 and you need to be 100% sure you are in the right gear!

Holding the brake pedal blinds the person behind though with your brake lights. As I say it is £90 or so (or used to be) option so if someone didn't tick that box they are as cheap as chips!

im with TX on this the rs3 is my 1st ever auto and i love it, thought it would be a hassle but from my 1st drive it been a piece of **** and quite frankly is an amazing gear box.

Mine doesnt have hill hold as i bought it at 1.5 years old, but i dont find i need it as others have said the car automatically holds/rolls forward any way and you just manually put the H/break on and the accelerator releases it. Think its only about £80 to get hill hold retro fitted anyway but i dont think i will ever need it.

Doesn't HH keep the brake lights on too? Sure I read that somewhere. Anyway, that twunt in the Range Rover in front has his brake lights blazing into my eyes so I'm only passing it on!

When I had hill hold, it still kept brake lights on. Could never understand why.

Auto Hold keeps the brake lights on because it’s keeping the pressure on all 4 calipers as if you still have your foot on the pedal.

Hill hold parking assist is a no brainer and for 80quid its the best option available.
Absolutely essential where i live with pretty big hills as i need to park on street, stops you from rolling back and hitting the car parked behind when changing from reverse to foward gear.

Auto hold doesn’t keep my brake lights on. 2016 Bitdi .
Very interesting. Definitely did on mine and it frustrated me as I don’t like blinding people behind me, but putting the electric handbrake on is also a pain.

Auto hold really does help you to stop and forget it.
I made it a point to check the eyes of the guy behind me at night, to see the red disappear from his face when I lift off the brake pedal.

Totally agree, the 7-Speed gearbox is incredible, will never go back to manual.
