Fault Code 01539 - Headlights Not Adjusted

Hi all, I drive a 57 plate Audi A3 8P with Xenon plus headlights.
After lowering car on H&R springs the headlights are very low.
I took it to a garage and they wound them back up using the adjuster on top of the headlights.

I drove the car that night and got flashed several times from on coming vehicles and noticed my lights were jumping up and down with the bumps instead of staying fairly level like they used to.

I jumped on the forum and did some research and found Ross-Tech give you the instructions on how to adjust the front and rear level sensors via VCDS.

Basic Setting

Headlight Adjustment

[Select]
[55 - Xenon Range]
[Basic Settings - 04]
Group 001
[Go!]
Activate the Basic Setting.
[ON/OFF/Next]

• The meas. block field now shows "Wait" and should switch to "Adjust Headlights" then (this may take up to 10 seconds).
• Adjust the headlights using their manual adjusting screws as referenced against a suitable aiming target.

[ON/OFF/Next]
The adjustment should now be learned.
[Done, Go Back]
Don't forget to check/clear fault codes afterwards.
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

I took it to the garage today for them to do this basic setting but it came up with Fault Code 01539 - Headlights Not Adjusted.

I read NHN wrote on a similar thread if the security code had been entered before the basic settings were carried out but the mechanic said it didn't give him the option to enter it?

I took some photos but unfortunately they are too large to attach. I will try and load them up soon.

I now have a permanent error message on the DIS saying "headlight range control defective"

When I lowered the front springs on mine the headlights were pointing down into the road, I figured that the manual setting was ok when the car was higher at the front so decided to just do the basic settings adjustment with vcds. This tells the computer that the car is level and the lights then level themselves to the new ride height. The lights came up and lighting back to a good position that matches the new ride height.

This means that you do not need to manually adjust after lowering. I didn't need a security code to do this on my 2011 plate s3

But curiosity lead me to being stupid and performing a adjustment/learning process and it stopped working and now my headlights won't self adjust anymore and give me a fault code i can't clear


Any ideas

Yeah I did similar scrapped the light control module, probably needs a new one

Got DJAlix to sort it all out but we count get rid of the control module fault every time i try to delete the code my headlight will.dip down then up then go back to the normal position.

Any idea how much they cost and where would be the best place to find one

Get the part number and search eBay, should be around 70 quid or so

I think it’s behind the glovebox, take that down and there are some modules there, had a quick look it’s around 50 quid
