Well as I said to start with, each to their own. Having driven both I much prefer the 184TDI. What will happen in the future will be up to Audi.

I was not alone!... and how very quick of you to pick up on my tongue in cheek humour although in response as you appear to need a number plate to remember your initials its hardly surprising!
Let's get back to the OP which actually until you diverted was about a comparison between PETROL A/S3!
No 'argy bargy' here just analysis of facts and then an objective decision based on subjective criteria.

Good discounts, sensible spec, private sale = reasonable to run RS. 2 years £7k depreciation. I expect the RS4 will lose double that.

Good discounts on a new rs4 ? I’m guessing you’ve got someone high at an Audi dealership in you’re back pocket or either I must have missed something. Can’t even seem to get £500 off a decent spec rs4, or any RS model.
RS discounts have never been as good as other models. Best ever deal I had was an A7 BT. Over 20% plus support from Audi Finance. No one is in my back pocket by the way. There is always a deal to be done but has to be approached in a personable yet clinical way. Don't get fooled by £x a month simple arithmetic and always do your homework.

I had a TTS (272ps) and loved the performance but found it was too tempting to drive quick and found the 'S model' bills are pretty expensive when it comes to things like replacing brake calipers etc. So when I replaced it I didn't want more power and ended up going for a 2017 2.0tfsi quattro sportback in a bid to slow myself down.
I'm convinced it must have more than 190bhp, it has more torque than my old 210bhp Scirocco or 225bhp MK1 TT and torque is what makes power... I'm intrigued to see what they make standard on a rolling road, wouldn't be surprised if it's 210-220bhp. Haven't seen any charts yet as very few have remaps available so no before and after figures.
The smaller turbo spools up quickly and in sport mode it's pretty quick. I find the suspension a bit soft though coming from a TTS, presume the S3 has stiffer suspension than my s-line.

Actually the DJR is for David and Jenny Robinson. Jenny is my wife and the the plate has been now been transferred to our new Q3 2.0 TDI 190, DSG, quattro, sport. As I have problems with my legs and can no longer drive safely the driving is done by Jenny.
You have just replied to a 2 year old post I think. Sorry to hear about your legs but I still don’t understand why you want your initials on your number plate!! Each to their own though. Sell the plate and get a Vorsprung! Bit surprised you have bought a Sport model, I thought a year or two back you were most insistent that SE spec and standard seats were best.

The model range for the Q3 is different to the A3, basically Sport, S-Line, Edition 1, and Vorsprung. The Sport has the most comfortable seats of any Audi I have owned and the Sport trim with a few options gives me just the car I want. When I purchased my current Q3 they offered the Sport trim with a 150 or 190 TDI engine, but , for some reason, they no longer offer the 190.
The 8V A3 was introduced nearly 8 years ago and the new one will have similar versions to the Q3. Pleased that you like the Sport but do recall a few years ago how vocal you were about having to have SE specification because of your dislike of Sport seats etc. Glad to see things have moved on. We have a new 45 Vorsprung Sportback on its way to replace S3 and a diesel car. We will see if it’s a wise choice. Sadly Diesel is now seen as the fuel of the devil and unlikely to be a big seller or retain its value hence limited demand .
The Sport 40 TDI 190 is still showing on the configurator.
Back to the original post. S3 versus 190. Having owned both and driven 10’s of thousands of miles I would go S3 every time. Little difference in fuel economy and the extra 100/110 Ps when required is both fun and safe. The S3 is undoubtedly the peach of the 8v range and add SSS and a Pano Roof and you can’t go wrong. As a daily driver S3 is my favourite

The S3 even in BE spec needs SSS Pan Roof and virtual cockpit as a minimum. Lots of poverty spec base models don’t sell.

Having owned an S3 and 1.8TFSI, the S3 LTA is 32 mpg, the 1.8, 42 mpg. I can't see the 2.0/190 being much different to the 1.8/180.
Lol, nice to have but at an extra £3k... Knock half that off the asking price after three years and a similar S3 without these extras will sell quicker.
Have to say that an A3 SE loaner had the most uncomfortable seats after half an hour of any car I've driven in a long time.
well... where do I start? 1.8 is nothing like the 2.0. Less torque. Less power feels like a little buzz box.
extras on an S3... Pan roof, 19in wheels, Mag ride SSS, tech pack etc... £5k more new yes and well worth £2k premium after 2/3 years. They turn the base BE car into something special.s-tronic economy is far better than manual btw

The 2.0 isn't that much better than the 1.8 and if the economy has dropped by 10 mpg... S-tronic far better economy lol.
An extra £100 a month to lose for what most would see as pointless extras. Go for it, your buyer will be pleased you lost an additional £3k+ on a few flashy toys.
I actually disagree. A Pano roof costs about £900 after discount . People will pay circa £500 more for a used car with one if they want one. Over 2/3 years a £10/15 a month loss.
Look at the official figures for M6 versus Auto Stronic where there are both offered and Auto consistently out performs M6. Certainly my 2018 S3 Stronic 310 is way more economical than a previous 2014 S3 300 M6.
If you are on a budget don't have extras you like. For me a sunroof and nicer wheels are worth the extra, much of which is recovered on resale.
On the basis of your argument you should be running around in a £5k Hyundai! Anything else is surely pointless ;-)
