Hi guys,

Before my S3 was serviced it would bang on gear change when I was accelerating hard. I assume that's part of the remap previously done but since having the car serviced it doesn't do it anymore on most gear changes although the odd time it does just not as loud.

It may just be me but it feels different now as well. The car was overheating due to a faulty thermostat to which they plugged in a VCDS or something along those lines so I'm wondering if that could of possibly wiped the existing map or something?

With some maps, eg Revo, disconnecting the battery will cause the car to revert to a Revo version of a standard map. A Revo dealer or someone with the Revo switch device can switch the map back on.
Alternatively, an APR or RTech map for example are not changed if the battery is disconnected.

The remap was carried out at R-Tech

Depends who serviced the car, if dealer they may have updated the ECU & this possibly cleared the map, ask the service company what diagnostics they used & if Odis ask for the log if the sessions which would show any updates or changes made.

I would also call r-tech & explain, ask if there map can be overwritten by a firmware update, most can.

Also, possibly marker now on vag systems it was mapped.

If it's an S3 8P it has no warranty so not an issue. There is a very noticeable difference between a mapped car and a standard one and if the map had been written over you would notice more than a lack of a bang. If it was overheating pre service and the engine was running hotter than now this would have made it more likely to pop and bang when changing gear. I presume it now really only bangs when the engine is good and hot after you have been using some of the performance.

Well ideally I wanted to take it back to R-Tech and get them to carry out the service but because I'm so far away and the thermostat went I just needed to get it into a local garage asap, which wasn't an Audi garage.

I'll give R-Tech a call and see what they suggest. I'm not sure it feels as quick as before or as responsive as it was but maybe I'm just getting used to the car.

I'm a little bit concerned because I assumed that the main reason for a map is to accept the new modifications to a car and if it has been wiped then I'm running 370BHP and over 400ftlb of torque on a standard map, is that a major issue?

If it's a standard map then you will be running standard power. You alter the map to increase boost, alter lambda and ignition timimg. Also to cater for any hardware changes such as turbo, injectors etc.

Just call RTech, they are a well liked tuner and should sort you out.

As in the car is running 370bhp and it has been remapped at R-Tech what I'm saying is I'm concerned that if it has been wiped and it's now on a standard map then is that a major issue short term wise

Not an issue if the car has all standard hardware. A change of FMIC wouldn't make much difference .

Absolutely no way is the R-tech map wiped simply because the drop from 370 to 260 bhp would mean the car would hardly go. People forget how dead a stock S3 is. My car is 380 and whether it farts on gear change depends on how hard you have been driving it so almost certainly heat related and just catching everything at the right point when it changes gear.

Oh if it's 370 then as Paddy says you'll know it for damn sure if it's down by 110.

Thing is, you can easily get used to the extra power following a remap and after a while it doesn’t seem that fast. That’s speaking from experience.

It does when its suddenly not there anymore :)
