Hi guys,

looking to take the plunge on a facelift car. I’m already looking at tuning options - I understand if you replace the DP with a decat downpipe when on stock turbo you get an annoying wastegate rattle that can be heard. I was wondering if this is the same deal if going with a sports cat?

Thanks

Don’t worry about the rattle. If you cycle back through to dynamic before starting the car, it doesn’t happen. Or it didn’t on mine.

Doc, did you have a decat downpipe?

He isn't on about the exhaust valve rattle, he is on about the wastegate rattle that only really comes into its own when you're running a decatted downpipe.

Boj27, I would say if you're in your 30's and getting older then it will annoy you. It annoys the hell out of me and I dread starting the car in the morning or driving around light load part throttle as the rattle doesn't go away even when the car warms up. It's always there on light throttle, although it does go when you're on heavier throttle (but by that time, you've opened up the exhaust valve and the car is loud). A decat ruins the car in my opinion and if I could do it again, I would probably stick with the Stage 1.5 and forget it. Other option is going stage 3 and fitting a bigger turbo.

In answer to your question, I'm not sure if a sports cat rather than a decat would help mask the noise. You would like to think that it would as the standard fit downpipe and cat does a pretty good job of doing it.

Ah, maybe so in that case. I’m referring to the rattle during the cold start phase.

I’m 25 but the rattle would annoy me I think, considering I’m coming from a prefl.

I’d rather go stage 1.5 so remap and a wagner cooler and stick at that without rattle, or go sports cat if it helps the problem, but unsure if it will.... maybe I’ll need to ask around a few more forums first!
Thanks for the comment, appreciated

It's difficult because it seems to differ between cars and individual sensitivities.

Personally, running the Integrated Engineering downpipe with a 200-cell, it's barely anything about stock which for me was only really there on initial cold start. People compare it 'a baseball card in the bike spokes' which is a little bit how I'd agree, but while wearing earmuffs (maybe that's the sport cat influence?).

Also varies between tunes, I ran Unitronic Stg1 for a short period and it was notable, still not an issue for m, but moving to stg2 it's reduced to a much narrower throttle band - cruising up a gradient at 30mph keeps it constant, otherwise it's dribs and drabs as you gently accelerate. Above 50-60mph or with the radio on even quietly, it's not even audible.
