Dealer issue - Haldex / rear differential

I emailed Andrew Doyle when I was dingdonging with lookers. I had been telling audi uk about it over facebook messaging from day 1. I got a call straight away from a lovely lady that said he had passed it to her personally to deal with. She was fantastic. She told the gen manager to ring me and it was sorted. I hope they are as good with you as they were with me but I would say that you get the personal attention when you email Mr Doyle.

I think the problem here is how to prove the diff is faulty rather than someone drained it.
If it was faulty then it should be covered under warranty along with all the other parts required which Audi will happily pay for.
If it was drained by accident whether by dealer or indi then someone will have to cough up and Audi isn’t gonna care as it’s not their problem. They aren’t in the business of fixing other people’s f***-ups.
the only thing that is for sure is the OP didn’t drain it him/her self. Not really sure how it can be proved who’s at fault especially now that the dealer has had it and probably dismantled some bits so even an independent engineer looking at it will have issues determining how and who broke it.

Think you’ve hit the nail on the head. The OP really is in a horrible situation, especially when he classes his indie as a friend. Like you said if it’s Audi’s fault they’ll quite happily pay, but If they think it’s someone else’s problem they aren’t going to touch it. I know if it was an indie I used who ****** up they would certainly deny any fault as they probably couldn’t afford to lose £3500 in fixing the problem

This is very true.
I'm going to wait and see what Audi UK's bring to the table (if anything), if no joy (or not enough to convince me to replace with new unit) then I will most likely replace with a used unit elsewhere. I need the car back so can't afford to have a drawn-out argument with the dealer for weeks for a battle which is very difficult to prove.

Sent you a PM mate.

Oh and if you want to speak to the top man:
Managing Director of Audi UK is Andrew Doyle
andrew.doyle@audi.co.uk
also copy your email to - executive.office@audi.co.uk
Thanks buddy,
Spoke to your guy and we're pretty much back at square one, it boils down to whether I could get an engineer's report to somehow prove that I've not been driving with an empty diff for over a year.

Herts, how are you getting around at the minute? Have they offered a courtesy car or are you without

Using my in-laws' Smart Roadster, gets me around but only 2 seater so can't take both my kids anywhere. We also have another family car at least.

agree it’s not a nice place to be for you. Was just pointing out how I’m reading it and not trying to offend your indi pal or the dealership.

Just a suggestion , ask Audi UK how many haldex units they have sold both in UK & Europe , they will know , it will show an underlying problem if any.

Maybe worth investing in a Dekra survey and inform both Audi and the indie that is what you are doing.
Think also worth involving the indie . They may be insured against this type of issue. If fault cannot be proven there should be a compromise between all parties.

In all likelihood, assuming that Audi UK won't be able to resolve this for me (and tbh the only thing that would be acceptable would be to replace the unit under extended warranty which I can't see happening), I'll be going down the salvage/breaker route.

Whilst I would love to prove the dealer wrong, I can't really question my indie (personal friend and already told me that diff oil wasn't touched) if tests aren't conclusive and I don't have the inclination to go to the added expense of independent tests etc.

I feel quite bad for you, I’m guessing If your indie hadn’t been a friend you’d be taking it further by getting independent checks to find out what’s gone on. It’s shame that if Audi refuse to do anything the cost is going to be down to you, you’ve found yourself in a crappy situation

I've gotta look on the bright side - I should be able to get a newer revision of the part for around £400 and a bit more labour fitting it, plus I can sell the Haldex ECU and get some money back (mine should work fine and would avoid need of coding newer version to my car, I am told). I saved more than that by buying the car from a colleague so I'm still quids in (in a way). Obviously I'd rather not have to spend this money on repairing the car (a carbon fibre diffuser would've been nice!) but doesn't look like I'll be left with much choice.

I am sorry to here that. Leaves a bad taste with Audi Was your indie friend a Audi approved independent?
If he is there may be still some recourse.

Don't think it'll go my way, already looking into breakers' units, found a couple of decent ones around £350-400. Need to get the car back up and running, can't drag this out forever and it looks like I'm fighting a losing battle unfortunately.

Thanks @pburv - seen that one, I've seen them all on eBay! Not bad, but if I recall it's from Bradford (shudder) and is collection only anyway (200 miles from me)
I found one from (supposedly) a 2017 S3 with 4,000 miles on the clock which is a newer revision (L as opposed to H you posted above) and seller has made me an offer of £370 delivered instead of £400, will probably go for that.

No worries mate.

It seems to me that Audi play on the fact that owners simply cant do without their car for long periods, so they just stall and stall until they get their way because owners give in.

At least 400 quid isnt too bad

True - to be fair, I spoke to an indie specialist and he said that he'd come to the same conclusion as Audi, so I'm realising that my case is not as strong as I originally thought. And again, I can't afford to hang around for weeks fighting with them.

Having had a good look at the Final Drive (as they call the rear diff), I'm somewhat concerned that they keep changing the part revision; my car had the F variant (used until Feb 15), there have been G, H, K, L (which I just ordered) and the latest S. Maybe there's something inherently wrong with the version I had which lent itself to failure?

Just had a call from Audi - £216 to diagnose the problem!! I told them what it was when the car came in...I reckon that's 1.5 hours labour @ £120 + VAT

Makes you wonder if extending the warranty is worth it though!

Indeed! I'm a glutton for punishment - just authorised a further hour labour charge as the car is showing a camshaft problem which requires further diagnostics in order to ascertain whether it's covered under extended warranty. Figured I'd rather know now what's wrong with it, hopefully it'll be covered under warranty so Audi pick up the rest. Don't want them turning round again saying I've been elsewhere so not covered!

OMG gutted for you mate. How many miles has the car done?

Things like this is the reason I'm looking to downsize, or to be fully covered just lease with all servicing included.

Not sure if it’s an option for you mate, but why you don’t try speak to the dealers manager about coming to a deal on your car against another one they have in stock? Obviously I don’t know if your cars a pcp/hp or bought outright but maybe the dealer could come to some sort of compromise.

Back in 2016 I had a 2012 C class which was coming to the end of its used approved warranty. Long story short it ended up having a gearbox problem which was fixed under warranty then a couple weeks later the clutch started to slip. I took my complaint straight to the manager of my main dealer branch & I was offered the cost of my C Class back in part ex valuation & they knocked me £2000 off the list price of a E250 they had in stock. They only did it because the C Class was a problematic car, which seems the same as your A3

have you checked that they aren’t different between the pfl and fl then there’s the manuals and the 6 or 7 speed stronics. just a thought..
I know it’s just the rear diff but i wouldn’t put it pass Audi to change something like number of splines or bolt holes between models and model years.
Had issues getting a dmf/clutch for an old golf. There was like 7 different variants for the same year/engine.

Yeah I checked with a specialist, he said I can get any variant of the rear differential with F onwards. Audi's quote (which would leave me bankrupt!) is for the latest variant S, which confirms that they are interchangeable. Going to keep my current Haldex ECU to avoid need to programme the new one in, also I should be able to sell it for around £100 so recover some of the cost of the part.

Nice idea about part exchanging but not really an option for me financially, I'm just over a year into a 5 year personal loan on the car.

just thinking on the spot here, but Im guessing you own the car outright as you’ve got a personal loan on it? So If you could strike any sort of deal with Audi to take the car back without you taking a loss even if you had to put £1000/2000 to get into something else would that not be better for you?

Personally with the problems you’ve had/having I wouldn’t want to keep that car another 4 year.

I see what you're saying but once these issues are sorted, the car should (hopefully) be sorted. Rear diff I'm getting is several revisions newer than what I had so in theory should be improved, and should last for the lifetime of the car anyway (obviously when it's got oil in it!).

I do technically own the car outright, but I'm already paying £300 a month in loan repayments, if I trade in for something else I'd probably be paying at least £200 a month more which is more than I'd like to spend on a car (main reason why I sold my Q5 a few years ago).

I was talking to a lad in work about this today, straight away and without hesitation "If he's got GAP burn it out and say it was vandals", he was 100% serious as well!!! I just laughed at him :D

So did you buy it used then? Looking at your sig it's 14 plate, so you've only had it 12 months then if you're only one year into the loan?

LOL I work in insurance so not sure that'll fly!! Plus I don't have GAP insurance anyway. Yep, bought used from my colleague who owned it since new (so I knew its history and how it's been driven)

Personally if it was me I would be thinking of a way of getting out the car but that’s just me, it does my head in when things start to go wrong & it’s already cost you to buy the extended warranty which they aren’t even paying out on.

£300 a month for the next 4 year on a car coming up to 6 year old with over 50k on it just doesn’t sound like fun to me. I’m guessing you put a big deposit down?

don’t mean to sound like a ****, it’s just my way of thinking

No, it's a personal loan not PCP, just the monthly payment, no deposit.
It's not fun but at least I own the car, been down the PCP route a few times and you end up with nothing after paying more than that per month.
I plan to keep the car long term, unless it goes seriously wrong and can't get warranty any more.
I'll be writing to Audi when this is all over to see if I can get some compensation, probably not but worth a shot.

Not impressed - I told them on Monday morning to investigate camshaft adjuster fault (1 hour labour supposedly) and I have to chase them on Wednesday afternoon for an update as I've not heard anything! Not impressed (but not surprised either)...
