Horrid bug splats!

So I've cleaned my GTI for the first time, started the decontamination process but haven't clayed it yet. But upon finishing I've noticed sort of faint bug splat marks on the paint on the front of the bonnet even though the car is clean. Now this car was not clean when purchased, and I suspect it hasn't been in a long time. I tried using tar remover on the bonnet to no avail, I haven't tried clay yet but I suspect that wont help. My guess is the clear coat has been slightly worn by the acidity of the bug splats on the front as it hadn't been cleaned off. Is this going to be solved by polishing or does anyone have any ideas?
