How do guys, a couple of you already know from another post but it's off topic so long story short i'm attempting to start a brainstorming thread to help me gather a few ideas if anybody is up for it i would appreciate it a lot.

The horse - 2006 A3 8p 2.0 tfsi BWA engine.

My oil pump has either seized or snapped the drive chain or the balance shafts have kaput with the chain taking all the grunt also. I have two oil pressure gauges. One manual one on a T in the engine bay going to a Digi one on the dash both reading zero. I did a fairly hard second gear pull into third and then it went and I shut it off.

I'm thinking chances are my engine is shot.

I have three options as far as I can see.

1.) Throw a new oil pump on and hope for the best.

2.) How easy is it to throw an S3 lump in there ? Do I need the whole ECU, loom and everything or can my ECU run the S3 engine with adequate mapping. I have very good Winols knowledge and could sort that out if need be.

3.) Throw another stock engine in but they're £800-1300 for another 500 I could find an S3 engine.

I'm going to say my engine is probably done at this point. At least the head will be toast and they're half the price of a complete engine alone.

Many thanks for any input! The sumps coming off next week at some point so I can assess the damage

Pull the engine so you actually know what you’re working with. Why did you have 2 oil gauges?

Note that the S3 is Quattro so you’d need the running gear but you would need the S3 ECU too.

Luckily for me I work in a breakers yard. But we don't have any Mk5 gti TT or a3's with adequate engines.

I had two oil gauges just because I know those engines are very finicky with oil pressure if not looked after. I picked it up at 100k miles on the cheap. And I don't trust the " long life service intervals " recommend on those engines by Audi.

I had a bit of an issue with the sender on the digital gauge when I first got it so I matched it up with a small manual one on a T and just left it in the engine bay rather than putting a bung on it.

The reason I say throw an s3 in there I thought that the engine was the same block and head just the internals different.. and turbo ofc.

Wouldn't an S3 engine bolt up to a 02q gearbox with it being the same block.

I will be pulling the engine but I'm too impatient to know the damage so I was just going to whip the sump off on the ramp and see what the score is.

It's not a major deal I'm not too annoyed but I've spent a bit of dollar on the car now so it's going to have to be fixed !

Yes it would bolt to the O2Q. Pretty sure that’s what my S3 runs.
It's probably going to cost a lot more with the ecu etc. I'd probably better off buying a second hand bwa and putting a balance shaft delete from aks and a k04 on it

I've been meaning to delete the balance shafts before they shafted me but I just never got round to it lol it was only a matter of time. Not going to lie I don't exactly drive like mi grandma . Options

I'm puzzled why two oil pressure gauges were fitted instead of actually fixing the oil pump drive issue of the problematic spung loaded sprocket .

I think people are missing the reason why I have gauges lol

I have a series of gauges. Oil pressure, boost, afr.

Those were fitted prior to having any sort of oil pressure problem or any problems with the engine for that matter.

It's remapped yes, but the oil pump has just failed for no reason or suspect. It's either that or the balance shafts just seized up for no reason. There's always oil in my engine and it's always at the top of the stick and clean.

I maintain my engines regularly. But I can't account for the majority of its life and the female owner that had it previously.

The only problem I've ever had with that engine was the cam chain tensioner but I fitted a new kit and got the job done when it required doing.

It's just one of those, anything can happen to anybody but it's usually me by saying I should of deleted the balance shafts I didn't mean I knew there was an issue with the ones in my engine in particular. But I know they are an issue in general. A balance shaft delete kit from aks isn't exactly cheap either, it was a job on the list. But unfortunately it got me before I got it.

Ok so I've got my hands on a second hand bwa block and head. It's another 100k but for my sake I wanted to do the balance shaft delete from aks, brand new oil pump and put new bearings and rings on the bottom end. The head all looks fine from the one I've got. I've had the cams out and there's no wear it's just for the usual inlet crud up situation.

Can anybody assist me with a bottom end rebuild.

I.e, if I remove the big end bolts and the Conrod bolts are the stretch bolts or torque to yield etc, and does anybody know the part numbers please and torque specs, I can't find the torque specs anywhere for this engine

I'm going to need part numbers for the following:

Oil pump

Big end bearings and Conrod bearings ( depending on size after I send the crank to the machine shop, so those can wait for now )

Conrod bolts

Big end bolts

Oil pump drive chain and tensioner kit.

Literally any help or input would be massively appreciated, I haven't even taken my block apart yet but I'm just going to start fresh anyway.

Give AKS Tuning a call for your parts - they stock factory and aftermarket items. Tell them what you’re looking to do and they will advise.

Drop an update here of what up purchase for others information too.

Will do, I'm on a tight schedule this next week so it's going to have to be put off for a few days. I'll give them a bell on Monday morning and see what the options are.

I'm going to start posting some pics of the progress etc soon so stay tuned if you're interested

I'm actually in two minds about this new engine now though. I've got the sump off it and there's zero play in the Conrods I can get my hands on. So I'm not sure it's worth doing . It seems like a good engine on the Western front. Its from a VW Eos and not a gti so likely hood of it being ragged is somewhat less.

Didn't realize they were open today but have just spoken to a nice gent at aks.

I'm going to go for the freewheel sprocket as seen in pics.

The balance shafts have zero play but seen as I've got the sump of the new engine I'm cleaning the pickup and buying the sprocket. It's got a big price tag for what it is. But I'm not having happen what's happened again!

So this is my plans,

New oil pump,

Freewheel sprocket.

Clean sump and pickup.

New top end chain / tensioner and timing belt kit.

New gaskets for the parts I've taken off ( turbo, cam chain cover, rocker cover, etc etc. )

Bolts for things such as hpfp, the camshaft adjuster. I've removed that from the new engine already ready for the new chain and tensioner and after last time nearly rounding the darn thing I went all out and heated it up with the gas axe and used the impact and it came right out!

Aux belt.

All that stuff that might as well just be done now.

Debating a clutch but that's another couple hundo if I do, be wise to do it while I've got her out though. And I'm going to need an alignment tool anyway since the pressure plate disk and flywheel has to be donated from my old engine if I don't buy a new one.

So, I'm ordering my stuff from aks either today or Monday which is probably going to be around £360 in total. Then I'll get my old engine out and pics to follow will full progress.

I’m looking at the Balance Shaft delete too - using the VIS freewheel gear. I’d rather do the full delete including shaft removal but Audi replaced my balance shaft under warranty 2 years ago. With the freewheel kit I can revert back if needed.

Out of interest, I’m wondering why the AKS VIS wheel is £250 when it’s available from VIS for £165? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/balance-shaft-delete-kit-freewheel-tfsi-ea-113/352738968339

The one from vis has £30 postage so it's near enough £200 anyway.

I like aks they're a bunch of decent guys so I don't mind blowing the extra £60. Always next day postage and perfect packaging.

I've ordered loads off them and they never fail so it's all good. Anyhow, got the engine out but I haven't even assessed the damage yet.

Drained the oil first and there was metal reflecting all over it so I just decided to pull it. Here's some pics

Sumps coming off tomorrow dinner at work so will post pics of the carnage. It's going to be good from the sound it made when it went

Just to add, started at five after work.

Engine was out by 6.30 so it's peanuts of a job to get one of these out, most of the wiring is on the front of the engine and easily accessible, with coil pack n75 and diverter valve being the only wiring down the back. just getting it back in is a different story probably haha!

We shall see.

Well the sprocket from aks doesn't actually say aks on it.

So there is no clear difference and will be the same part. it's probably worth buying it from Vis Motorsport directly, I just preferred to order all my bits from one place.

Just a note there's two holes on the bottom of the balance shaft module allowing you to stick something in to lock them otherwise they turn freely when trying to torque the bolt on the freewheel.

Slowly turning the engine by hand the balance shafts can still move with a bit of resistance on the bearing but when the engines idling or higher there's no way the bearing will spin them so it's a nice quick solution

The process of getting the gear on is pretty simple really, push down on the tensioner and lock it with a pin, remove both oil pump and balance shaft cogs otherwise you can't get the chain off .. put both cogs back on the chain and bolt it up.

It's probably the most simple method rather than removing the balance shafts entirely but if you go for the whole deletion it's not that much extra effort.

Got the gear on and engine all timed up, ( cams and belt)

I've just got the aux bits to put on and water pipes and turbo and it's ready to go back in. I've just been pecking away at it on my dinners.

Engines all back in and running fine bar one issue.

I have a lumpy idle, it's not so bad but I was wondering if this was due to the balance shaft delete? I'd like to hear from anybody that's done it and the outcome. So I don't waste time hunting a vacuum leak etc.

All hoses are on, there's no fault codes and the engine fired right up no problem, no leaks etc.

It doesn't misfire if you rev it up it feels completely normal other than a slightly lumpy idle, if it is the balance shafts I can live with it is just like to diagnose the cause

Hi, did you ever get to the source of the lumpy idle? I've ordered the VIS balance shaft delete sprocket as well and was wondering if this will affect mine. Thanks

Sorry for such a late reply..

I just had the camshaft timing out a cog lol

Easily done, I was rushing it to be fair but nah I don't even notice any extra vibrations or anything with the delete. Runs perfectly fine

Did you have stock engine mounts or have you got poly mounts?
Have you have any bolts vibrate loose?
