Audi MMI unit help - No Bluetooth connection

I've recently bought myself a S3 8P (59 plate) and I am loving the car.

only a small niggle that I would like to rectify...

The car has a genuine Audi MMI unit fitted although I think it is a later addition to the car. The navigation and radio both work perfectly. I would also like to use the phone connection ability, although this doesn't seem to work and I cannot access anything about this on the units settings. There is also nothing to connect to through Bluetooth from my mobile when the unit and the car are switched on and running.

The volume and mode control on the steering wheel both work, although the voice speech button doesn't work.

When buying the car I was also told that the AUX connection doesn't work either and I believe they aren't correctly linked up since the MMI unit addition.

Has anyone any tips for where to start to get the full use out of the MMI unit?

I have uploaded an image from google of the unit that has the same layout/buttons as the one fitted in my car which I hope helps.

Does it let you connect your phone via Bluetooth in Setup ?

It may be that there is no bluetooth in there - its a separate module to the RNS-E... Best to check the sticker on the Service book for the factory build codes - that can be decoded to determine what was built. If there's bluetooth it would show up on a bluetooth phone scan after turning on the ignition.

That would make sense if they're separate units. I assumed that the bluetooth would have been built in to the MMI unit (which to me makes more sense than it being separate!). I'll have a look into these codes, and use the link you sent.

I guess the separate bluetooth part is something that can be found online and added?

Not at all. There aren't any phone/bluetooth connection settings to adjust at all on the set up ‍

Yep - plus an adapter loom plus microphone needed up in the dome light - then some coding to get everything to talking to everything else. Can be done cheaper with a Fiscon equivalent - and the car is fooled into thinking its an Audi unit.

Brilliant, thanks for your help. Clearly something I'm going to have to spend a little time looking into, and buying the correct parts!

Luckily my dad owns a motor garage and he has the VCDS software!

I retro-fitted the complete factory Bluetooth phone system to my A3 about 3 years ago and it cost about £230 then for everything .
As already mentioned , you will need the Bluetooth module & antenna , microphone and adapter loom and VCDS to code it all in.
It works great , but the speech dialogue system (SDS) is utter rubbish and I never use it......

Where did you get your genuine audi equipment from? Please could you link me? the Fiscon equivalent in the link above is £270, something cheaper would obv be nicer! but if that's the price of the equipment then fair enough.

Microphone 8L1 862 373A

Antenna 8P0 035 503E

Quadlock adapter Loom is custom and non-oem so either on kufatec or eBay - fairly easy to find and as you are in A3 you don’t have to worry about k-line connections as your car communicates completely on canbus - so the available adapters are fairly commonplace.

You have the MK1 rnse the MK2 version has the Media button where you have the CD/TV button . You should have a quad lock on the back off your unit and as the buttons on your SW are working I would say it has been coded correctly , but what you will find just like mine 59 plate that SDS wasn't fitted to these earlier cars but can be retrofitted . As to your BT have you scanned the car with your phone to see if the BT is there , mind BT doesn't play music through it only contacts will be exported to HU . As for the Aux do you have a jack point in your center console if so , I would recommend firstly get some HU keys and remove your unit to see if you have a grey 32 pin plug ( right off quadlock ) if so you might only need to hard reset your unit after you change the coding to let car know you have Aux and if not then you can go 2 ways either buy a ready made Aux loom or Google the wires you have to remove from quadlock to grey 32 pin plug .

I have gone into hidden menu and it says Bluetooth is activated I have the cradle in the armrest and still doesn't work. I have now bought the universal cradle but still nothing any ideas how to connect my phone to the Bluetooth so I can use the mmi to make calls?

Worth checking the coding is correctly done .

My guess would be that the previous owner who fitted the RNS-E couldn't be bothered to go the extra distance to get the AUX working is all. So worth doing a complete job if the unit is having to come out anyway

phil_w has helpfully posted all the parts numbers , I bought everything on his list.
I purchased the BT module & antenna s/h from eBay , microphone new from Amazon , wiring loom adapter again new from eBay via a Polish seller.
I ensured I bought the latest BT module to ensure functionality with the latest phones, think mine came from a 2010/11 vehicle?
You need to be careful as a lot of eBay sellers are selling rather old BT modules (2003,04,05 etc) , IMHO you really need the latest version to be safe......

You are correct Audi BT only allows calls to be made non transferring off music via BT , you can use SD Cards to put your music on ( check earlier post on SD size ) and then select them via your thumb wheels so once your Rnse is on you only need to is go source select media and BoBs your Aunty ,
There is a big section on the site for after market head units ,best have a look there if your looking for something you can Bluetooth your music from.
First thing I would do is take unit out check to see if Aux is wired , if not Google what wires you have to move to a 32 pin plug ( buy from eBay ) then do that ,check coding after making sure everything you have extra is added ie Aux, mfsw, cc ( if you have ) etc then hard reset HU and then go to source select Aux and Fann*us your uncle
