So after looking into the new S4 a little bit it seems they have ditched the (in my opinion) better DSG transmission for the more conventional torque converter tiptronic transmission instead. Is this due to the fact the S4 is now a diesel? What are people's thoughts on this change?

The B9 audi S4 has always been a zf 8 speed tiptronic

I think the current (B9) S4 also has the torque converter, the previous (B8) had the DSG.

Oh I had no idea, I assumed it'd be S-Tronic as the whole B9 A4 lineup ultilises it. Any idea why it was chosen for the S4? Just purely because of the higher torque output?

I find the tiptronic works much better in the b9, the s-tronic in the b8 was definitely worse in my opinion. It’s also smooth at low speeds, which the s-tronic seemed to struggle with when I had a 2.0tdi b9 as a loan car.

I think it's due to the high torque output both 3.0 tdi 272ps and S4 have the zf box

Exactly this. Although a DSG for high torque output engines is possible and exists in the VAG group (Porsche Panamera uses it for the highest power versions...) but I assume that it was down to weighing up cost/torque in the end.

You're a bit late, like nearly 4yrs, when the B9 S4 was released.
If your a well known member, you may well recall various discussions on threads at the time.
The B9 is the base model of MLB platform, of which many other models utilise Tiptronic, particularly V6 2.9/3.0 petrol & S TDi diesels.

Your referring to the New 2020 facelift. Curious as to why it is not on that much longer thread.

Also curious as to how you came to the conclusion the S4 has DSG.

I'm not too familliar with the A4 platform to be honest, I've only recently started looking into it as an option, having never driven a newer tiptronic car, the S-Tronic transmission seems far superior to me, the main purpose of this thread was to get people's opinions on the transmissions and which better suits the car.
I thought it made sense as the whole A4 lineup autos are DSG transmissions, so I assumed it'd be the same story for the S4.

Except the 3.0tdi 272PS, which also uses the Tiptronic box like the S4. :)

I can't see the point of the survey as, in reality the transmission is the zf hp8 automatic gearbox and no survey will change this. Thus I will not be contributing a vote.
The key really is that a simple search in Google would have directed anyone to the correct information or ask the information in here which many of us would have been only too happy to help with...

Just curious about people's preferences.

But there is no choice, forgive me for being pedantic, minority here are used to it by now. The dsg weak point has been it's inability to handle high levels of torque, I quote Audi, plus the one in the b8 broke with other issues as well. Read up on Mechatronic failures...

ZF or DSG, Audi seem to do a terrible job with them judging by all the complaints about lag. The DSG on my old box was terrible while the ZF8 in my BMW has been spot on
