So for the past few months I've driving a new X3 M-Sport X-Drive. Personal circumstance have changed a lot and I needed something that could accommodate all my needs and take care of my mother, the wife's mother regarding appointments etc (both disabled).
Anyway I tried a few things and even had a deal on a Q5 but BMW blew them away on part ex and monthlies. The car I got was a a new 2019 X3 2.0 M-Sport that they had on stock and right time right place I pulled the pin. I was surprised to find out the car only had 2 x options that were Glacier Silver paint and privacy glass. It has full park assistant, 10" satnav, cruise, 8 speed auto, heated sport seats with adjustable lumbar support, digital dash, 20gb music jukebox, powered boot, ambient lighting, BMW connected (unlock/lock doors), aux heating and more stuff I'm getting to find out/know.
So it drives quite well, good steering feedback, good traction but no S3 in regards power and handling. But, I have jelled with it quite well and the "boss" loves it.
Didn't think I'd ever want and SUV but as stated earlier my circumstances changed that it was a needs must.
All in all I miss the S3 for the fun factor but I don't regret my decision as it is good to drive in its own way.
I'll get some pics up and I will continue to peruse this site, it's a good crack.
Ps, now I can go on trips with @MattSedg :whistle2::whistle2: Now where's my tent :thumbs up::thumbs up:

Congrats on the new car mate, the new X3 is seriously nice.
I was faced with a similar problem as you, albeit my wife is the one who is increasingly disabled.
I loved my S3, as she did but it just wasn't practical anymore.
We have a mk1 SQ5 now, it's our first suv and its soooooo much easier to live with.

Congrats on the new car. I think the X3 is the pick of BMW SUV range. An X3 M40i is on my list of possibilities.

What kind of discount did you get? Percentage wise.

I would have been tempted for the M40i @wab172uk but the price was to good to miss on the M-Sport (21% discount plus £2k extra on the part ex), maybe next time.

I agree @MattSedg the change was inevitable but well worth it. I like the fact it has also opened other doors with the family trips i.e. venture up the rough stuff and much easier getting the dogs out and about. PS great elbow shot lol.

So I'll be honest about the BMW as I know it can all be a bit biased when it comes to our cars, but here goes:

Pros -
  • Considering its standard spec (apart from paint and privacy) you get a lot of standard kit ie adaptive LED's and other stuff as mentioned in post #1.
  • Drives like a car and not a big bus.
  • Suspension is great even though its the M-Sport suspension (the big tyres help).
  • Seats were a bit hard at first but are starting to soften up a little. We traveled Goodwood festival of Speed from Cumbria and we did not feel uncomfortable at the end.
  • Tech is great. The screen multimedia interface are way better to use than the Audi IMO. The BMW Connect app is really good and can lock/unlock the car, program/enable heating etc.
  • Voice control system is brilliant.
  • Nice little touches around the car like the embossed X3 on the outside of the B pillars and inner door trim.
  • 95% of the interior plastics are good quality.
  • For a big lump it goes pretty well for a 190ps diesel.
  • Powered boot was a bit of a gimmick at first but now I think its a great feature.
  • 8 speed box is smooth and responsive.
  • Road wind/noise is really low.
  • Great for carrying all sorts of stuff, great for the dog cages and even moved a fridge freezer in it.
Cons-
  • Brakes could be better.
  • The gloss black interior trim inserts are a PITA to keep clean and scratch really easy.
  • The plastic just below the headliner on the B pillars is a bit naff and the seat belt buckle can rattle of it sometimes.
  • Auto Start Stop does not activate if in Sport mode.
  • Defaults to Comfort Mode every time the ignition is switched off and car is locked.
  • Eco-Pro is the worst driving mode of any car i have experienced, so unresponsive its criminal, obviously I don't use it.
  • No spare wheel, no repair kit due to RFT, would have preferred a spare and there is enough room under the boot floor to accommodate one.
  • Arm rest does not adjust forward/back/up/down.
  • Looks, a bit marmite from some angles.
So do I miss the S3, well I miss the power and sportiness of the S3 but I am happy with what the X3 offers and how it fits my lifestyle changes. Discussing the pro's and con's of a BMW on a Audi forum will no doubt be subjective and everyone will want to air their own opinion. However I am pleased with the new ride and as I have stated in other threads the Audi gave me a nice "feeling", but diffrent circumstance call for a different car.

All in all a good car, highly recommended but a Q5 is every bit as good.

Really like the latest BMW’s, have got the balance just right between advancing tech and keeping a classic interior, unfortunately this is where Audi is failing.

Was very tempted by the latest 3 series, similar.

This Audi forum is becoming an Audi free zone.

Main gripe for me with BMW group cars is lack of Android Auto. I have really appreciated that in my A3.

I may well have got another MINI (had 5 of them) but no Android Auto was something that put me off. Fiesta ST here I come.

Is it just the touch screen you are referring to or something else?

Yep touch screens dominating the interior and lack of jog wheels, I’m not a fan.

I test drove an X3 yesterday with a view to maybe replacing my Q5 (having had three in a row). I thought the 3.0d engine was super strong and it seemed to handle better than the Audi. Practically wise not much to choose between them. I think the cabin is not quite as nice as the Audi but probably OK, a personal choice really. Biggest thing is the looks overall are a bit marmite, you either buy-in to the BMW styling or you don't. The Audi is a bit more neutral overall. My views only so I'm not sure yet, it may come down to the deal. Depreciation does seem far greater though on the X3.

To be fair this is the same in the S3 (imo), regardless that is a great looking motor and sounds like you got a great deal so bit of a no-brainer. Think if I was offered that sort of discount on a new car that I was after I'd snap their hand off! Enjoy the new motor!

Is that £2k more on the px above what Audi offered? If so was that just on your deal or just for a px on anything BMW?

I found when I sold the S3, Audi were the lowest px quotes from anyone!

Audi quoted my S3 MY19 4000 miles at £27k, BMW told me it was booking at £29k but they gave me £31k. I also got a £1k dealer contribution on top of the other discounts. So all in all a very good deal, for me anyway.

Sounds about right for Audi! They looked at my car and said "It's mint" then they gave me the px price!!! When I questioned it being so low they replied with "It costs us £2k to prepare your car"....I laughed and said "You just said it was mint, what preparation does it need?" :D

I sold it to a sports car specialist for about £1,500 more.

PS: Which group did you use? I see that https://www.jct600.co.uk/ do all makes, wonder if sellers would get a better px if their old car can be sold within their group!?!?!

Audi really are letting themselves down at the moment, it’s quite sad to see really, dieselgate has done a lot of damage for the VW group.

When I spoke to a lease company before going direct with Mazda they said that Skoda and Seat sales are propping VW group up at the moment.
