for the second time in 16 months I had a coil pack go . For those not familiar with it , it results in engine misfiring and running horribly lumpy , a pull over straightaway job.
I had a 30 sec misfire day before and plugged in OBD and recorded cyl 1 misfire , so expected a coilpack after last years one.
Luckily AA came reasonably quickly and had one in van. Tbh I can replace one myself but wanted them to do a proper scan To check.

It’s a 2010 100k car now , so are these prone to going around this mark ?
AA guy said very common and the fact he had them in van .
Think I’ll keep a spare one in can now!

But my B7 2004 A4 2.0 tfsi Q hasn’t had any coilpack issues and it’s at 97k , and neither did my old A3 at 110k.

Are the coilpacks Not as good as they were ? Or is the b8 TSFI harder on the coilpacks than the previous B7 engine ?

Upgrade to the v10 R8 red top ones , actually cheaper than the originals

Heat, vibration and spark plug gaps wider than specified - can all put a strain on the coils. I've also read (but not experienced myself) that a faulty/failing or incorrect specification battery can also take its toll.

Why not just swap the other 2 and all should be good for a while?

AA checked plugs gaps , fine . Maybe just the age and 100k

I think quite a lot to do with these coils failing is the move of the manufacture of them to cheaper labour areas of the world, they are under extremely testing conditions though, but if designed correctly and if then manufactured correctly, I'd expect them to last for at least 10 years 100K miles and more - they are not a service part, only replace on failure, but if I were you, I'd be checking which brands the 2 replacements are, and replacing all these coils with genuine VW Group sourced ones and keep the others as spares.
I've only ever had 2 coils die on my in a 2002 VW Polo 1.4 BBY engine with Eldor coils made in a proper region of Europe, I deliberately bought a used same batch roughly coil as the first spare, and that lasted until we sold the car at 13 years and 105K miles, the only used coil I could buy to replace that was another supplier to VW Group, so when the second coil failed, another original as fitted at factory I fitted that and it only lasted a few months, luckily I had again bought a roughly same batch Eldor used coil and that one lasted until the car was sold, now a third used Eldor of a newer batch is stored in my daughter's 2009 Ibiza, but it has not been needed in almost 10 years 60K miles.

My wife's 2015 Polo 1.2TSI has Eldor coils, but they were made in Turkey, time will tell for them! This has prompted me to find out which brand of coils are in my 2011 S4!
