Hi guys, just doing some research on my engine as haven't looked into it to much. Turns out I've got a BRE 140 tdi, after a little look online most things coming back were around the oil pump hex shaft, other than that is there anything else I should be weary of? Also is it a DIY to change the hex shaft?

My old A4 was BRE engine. Bought with 43k and sold with a shade over 130k. Did nearly 90k miles in it and only ever had an issue with the VNT turbo dying.

I never bothered checking the oil pump drive as never had any issues with oil pressure at all.

Nope !

Double trouble ticking time bomb because it has both a 77mm oil pump balancer shaft drive and oil pump module is chain driven that has tensioner issues .

Hmmm, any idea the rough time scale these parts last? Worth getting it looked at for replacement?

Most commonly go 80-150K .

Trouble is chain driven is best converted to gear but that's more expensive .

The issue has been well documented for 10 years now .

Commence shuddering sphincter...
Thanks for providing a well-written article Gaz - looks like we all need to be well aware of this one.
All the best - one despondent BRD driver.

BRD is geared so just remanufactured modified balancer shaft and new longer hex key required .

The BRE TDI motors built from early 2006 onwards had the strengthened hex key and revised pump drive. Mines got 220000kms on the clock and it's still going well.

I'm afraid this isn't true. They didn't have a strengthened key or any different to the 77mm too short key that had gone before. They only had a change from chain to gear drive, which has no effect on the potential for this part for catastrophic failure, and engine end of. My car (BRE 2006) was at 354,000km before I had mine changed for a KMB modified hex key (100mm) and pump, which is the only sure-fire solution. You can see from the picture that is was quite on the edge of wear - it may have lasted longer, maybe not and a lot more KM than yours - but it's a ticking timebomb, whatever. They have been known to fail, quite often, from around 90K miles to over 400K, so mileage is not necessarily an indicator either. Only the other day I stopped to help a guy in a 2.0TDi 2007 A6, with relatively low mileage with a totally kaput engine down to this, very defect. Sort this now and the engines are almost bullet proof, for sure.
