My missus says she's only driving ours forwards and someone else will have to park it!

We got a good deal. £400 with all the CDWs, 3 drivers and no return (we're going from Phoenix AZ to San Francisco or San Jose).

Who did you hire from and for how long?

Don't know the company, but presume Alamo. I think we're going for about 12 or 13 days. Flying out on the 1st and back 12th or 13th. TBH, I'm not doing a great deal of the organising because everyone going except me is ex BA staff, so they're sorting all the flights out and my friend has sorted the rental car out, too!

Our holiday has now cancelled a week before we were supposed to leave because of the greedy B.A. pilots going on strike right in the middle of our trip. It will mean we won't be able to get back. A pity I am not allowed to swear!

I hope you get a full refund can you not fly with someone else

No money lost, just a year of planning out the window. It'll still be there next year.

A hastily arranged trip to Bavaria is now happening instead.

Ah man that sucks!

Altho, if flying with BA, since all there 737s are grounded theyre using some very old and VERY tired 747s.

We flew to Denver a few weeks ago with BA and the replacement 747 was an utter heap. We usually try and avoid using BA like the plague but had to settle for this particular flight :/

Going with three ex BA staff leaves me with no choice as it's all concessional travel that costs not a lot. Few hundred quid to fly First Class to the US of A ain't to be sniffed at, even in a rattly old Jumbo!

****** hell, that is a deal n half, its just cost me £4k for 3 of us to fly premium to Florida 1st class was over 10k

You need to be in the trade to get good prices. I've flown many places on jump seats for £25

Well we are slowly making our way to the tail end of our holiday.

LA to Barstow, Route 66, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, Death Valley, Yosemite, Sacramento, Napa Valley, Jelly Belly factory, Santa Cruz, Alcatraz, bike ride over the Golden Gate Bridge and now our final night in San Fran. We’ve cut our stay here one day short (6 days is enough in SF) to give ourselves more time to take in Highway 1 tomorrow and Friday on our way down to LA.

It’s been fantastic, loved every minute particularly Hoover Dam and Yosemite. Vegas was better than I expected and San Fran is lovely, but not as nice as Downtown Sacramento.

The only slight disappointment was being told I could choose my hire car only to be told afterwards that I had no choice but to have a Toyota Sequoia. Not quite the American dream but at least a 5.7l V8.

Just LA to do now before our flight home on Monday

Sounds like youve had a proper road trip there!

Personally, and from my experiences of travelling 24/50 states (and DC) by car, you see and experience so much more on a touring holiday then a multi center holiday.

It’s been fantastic. LV to the Grand Canyon was a trek, but worth it.

One thing we’ve learned about San Fran is whatever is supposed to be a 30 minute drive actually takes between an hour and an hour and half. The highways are almost always totally congested.

San Fran is always shrouded in fog at this time of year, but somehow we always stayed in the sun. Our first night here was probably a the coldest because we went to the Wharf where it was very chilly, but we had just moved from the 38- 46 degree heat of Yosemite and LV to about 21 degrees by the sea. Throughout the day it’s been around mid to late 20’s.

It’ll be good to do a bit more beach time in and around LA and see some of the sights. The boys are totally hooked on Fast and Furious so want to go here.

Yea its a long drive. I did the opposite, from the Grand Canyon village (Williams, AZ) to Vegas and was certainly a good run.

If you think San Fran traffic is bad i hope you dont get stuck in LA rush hour as thats usually even worse!

Personally, not a big fan of LA, dont really understand the attraction as once your out of the walk of fame area its a pretty dirty messy place full of homeless people.

A great beach not too far away is Santa Monica, with the end of Route 66 on the pier. A great place to be on a summers evening with plenty of eateries and amusements etc.

Fuel was also expensive in downtown LA ($5 gal) compared to $2.50/3 elsewhere (in 2016 anyway)

Fuel is 3.25-4 these days. In the town(s)it’s more expensive.

We are going to Santa Monica tomorrow.

We arrived into LA at 4pm on a Friday night and drove to Barstow. After being awake for 22 hours, driving out of LA was just sheer hell!!

Every highway was congested. The pool car and fasttrack lanes were no better.

Ok. Car related. Anyone recognise these places....

I could imagine it was (sheer hell!) Its no better driving into LA at those times either.

We got stuck for an hour or so at 7pm on a Wednesday night when we were there.
