Hi,

So my S5 went in for a full service 8 days ago. I've just checked the oil level in the car and its showing around 50%. I don't have a dipstick, but surely this is not normal? Is the full oil amount about 6 Litres?

I've not seen any oil leaks on my driveway or at my work carpark. Makes me wonder if the garage I used (indepedant VW/Audi specialist even changed the oil!)

I'll call them on Monday once they are back open. Has this happened to anyone??

Thanks

They might have changed it but not filled it right up, plenty folk complain about it being over filled with oil after a service but you are under.

I'm sure the level between min and max is 1 litre approx so you are about 500ml under.

You don't state what it was immediately after the service. If it was full but now 8 days later it shows 50% then there is a problem. Some leaks can be caught within the chassis & covers, but if continual then eventually you should see oil on the ground. Have you checked the coolant for signs of oil? What about the exhaust - any signs of smoke?

Do you mean the reading on the MMI is only for 1 Litre between maximum level and minimum? I wouldn't have thought this to be the case..

Unfortunately I didnt check straight after the service. I tried to check a few days later but the message about the engine being warm / off for 2 minutes kept appearing. I've not noticed any leaks on the ground, I will check the coolant and exhaust.

Its definitely unusual for the car to use this much oil (if it was topped up to the max level by the garage). In the past, I've purchased a 1L top up oil bottle and that lasts a few months usually.

I've always used 1 litre as a measure against the min and max reading on a dip stick or the MMI and it has served me well when doing a top up rather than pouring a tiny bit in at a time and checking the level. But I did say approx.

You might have a slow leak from the sump plug but what does concern me is you mention your 1 litre top up lasts a few months.

How many miles is this few months? Is it the 3.0 or V8 S5 you have?

Maybe a slight exaggeration! But a few months ago when the oil was low on the MMI, and service was due in 3 months, I purchased a 1L size, and it probably lasted about 6/7 weeks before the oil was starting to become close to low levels on the MMI. I only drive locally, and probably do 500 miles a month at most.

It's the 3.0 V6 I have. Will call the garage tomorrow and get them to perhaps have a look.

That does appear as if it is burning oil. I think @Tashfeen needed a top up after 5k miles. About half a service interval but he is stage 2 so increased heat means more oil burns.

I think yours is burning a bit too much oil but with out some figure from you it is just a hunch.

I've only done a couple of k in mine since service and moved to 5w 40 oil so will be useless as a comparison.

If Tashfeen does reply just ignore his silly remarks about the S5 or his stage 2 as he does tend to go on a bit.

This is pure class @MuPPeT_ON_TouR . Gotta love the banter on this forum and appreciate a good 'un even if it is coming from an S5 owner

I agree with @MuPPeT_ON_TouR and @Dippy on this one, your car does seem to be burning a tad bit more more than it should.

You mentioned that your garage filled 6ltr, it should've been nearly 7. If you've topped it up now I'd continue to monitor until it is at the min or it asks you for a top-up.

If you don't have one, I'd buy a dipstick as well as it might be a faulty oil sensor...

Is it a B8 or B8.5? I ask as the early B8s had PCV issue and therefore slightly increased consumption.

Hi Dude,

Its a 2011 so B8. I assumed 6L as the invoice has the oil listed with quantity of 6.2 (6.2L I am assuming..could be wrong). Will definitely buy a dipstick soon too.

ps. I didn't get the joke from Muppet, just assumed you were some sort of anti S5 person or anti oil person:footy: !!

The PCV was revised in the CREC engine. Although SSP624 simply states that this was done to "optimise" separation behaviour, we could infer that Audi was aware of the problems with the previous design. I don't know if there were any clear parts revisions done that would make B8s more prone to problems than B8.5s, but I would suggest that it is likely that B8.5s could still have consumption problems due to the PCV design.

So I called the garage. They said its pretty normal - its the calibration of the digital dipstick, and varies in hot and cold weather etc. Said to bring it in and they'll double check everything, so will be doing that in the coming days.

Update - so i took the car back. The garage has a look, topped up the oil slightly, and said it was a calibration issue with regards to the digital measurement :whip:

MMI showing full oil level now. Need to invest in a actual dipstick I think.

Thanks all:icon thumright:
