Hi guys, Has anybody come across this problem yet? I have heard from a good source that this is the case with all the latest Audi cars that have launch control?

I have a new RS3 saloon. Standard car bar an Eventuri intake. Last night giving it some stick. Car working faultess but when i stop and look in engine bay lots of oil been spurting out of gearbox breather next to where airbox sits. Its made a right mess! To note it only seems to do this after launch and gearbox very warm.

If this is normal then i think one of the tuning companys needs to make a oil catch can for this problem as i dont want to be cleaning the engine bay all the time.

Thanks

I’ve done 7 launches in mine and although I haven’t checked underneath after any, I’ve definitely not got any oil in the engine bay that’s outside of the engine / gearbox.

Definitely doesn’t sound right, sounds more like what Audi would say to fob you off. Perhaps too much oil in the gearbox? Book it in, call Audi Assist even... I wouldn’t want to do anymore damage.

Doesn't sound right at all.

Hi and thanks for reply, That’s exactly what my thoughts were.

I don’t want to throw names around, but a well known tuning company in the uk has given me the above info. Hence why I’m writing it on here. My next step was to go to Audi but now I’m not sure what next step is going to be.

The tuner hasn’t even seen my car yet, but over a message today he has said it’s kinda normal even though it sucks.

Tbh I did around 7 launches last night. I’m wandering if the oil breather spews oil out of gearbox when the gearbox is proper hot. I know launching isn’t great for the car anyway. Although I don’t expect oil to be thrown over the engine every time I want to go a bit mad in the car.

Anybody else?

Thanks

Mine does it,
Iroz are developing a catch tank system.
If you look on iroz car he runs a sock type filter over the breather, sort of like the old Spoon reservoir sock's

If it’s a well known tuning company and not Audi, I put more faith in their answer but still doesn’t sound good.. problem is, the gearbox was filled at factory to a level and that level is no longer met. Perhaps worth checking the level regularly?

7 launches is a lot and there would be a lot of heat in there. If it’s anything like motor/gearboxes in work with me, breathers operate by pressure not oil level.

I’ve done 7 in total, only 2 of those were together about a mile apart of one another and I’ve definitely got no oil under the bonnet that I’ve seen but will take time to look for this breather when I see the car next week. Most of my launches are in the middle of drives, like a few going off of bridge tolls so the car isn’t thrashed either side of the launch.

This sounds pretty shocking. If launching or dragging the car a lot, I assume the gearbox oil needs changing/replacing more often that is recommended? I'm not sure how often it should be done though.

S-Tronic oil changes are every 38,000 miles, our dealer told us to not muck about with it and make sure it definitely goes in on time because of any future claims.

It happens when the gearbox DSG fluid gets very hot.

As said above look at the Iroz video of it which shows it having come out the breather on the air box side.

Should it be happening though? And if launching a lot, I assume the gearbox oil change should be more often than every 38k miles?

Audi will stress their service schedules are under normal conditions, drive harder, shorter trips, cold engine trips and servicing is recommended to be done more frequently but not required to keep warranty.

My engine oil is being done every 5k Miles. Every 5k at a specialist and every 10k on the clock at Audi to keep their invoice for resale value. I’ve got no problem changing every 5k when it costs about £130 a time to keep the engine in tip top condition. Can do it myself with ease, but rather the reassurance of the specialist doing a bit of a health check at the same time too, not to mention another invoice.

I’ve used Millers Racing Oil, the engine runs 5 degrees cooler in any running condition... immediately apparent.

I'm on about the gearbox oil though?

In the current temperatures coupled with lots of launches / under bonnet heat etc.....

Only so much the oil cooler can do.

What would you say? Not a cheap thing to be done yearly. Audi make it so difficult also.

Depends doesn’t it, if you are doing 200 launches between services then at least half the normal frequency? A launch is brutal for the drivetrain.

Not sure what the guidelines are on the Haldex oil change?

I see figures frequently of 100-105 Celsius for engine oil, would I be right in thinking that the gearbox oil would be getting up to similar figures ?

I always thought they would warm up together, I don’t think about gearbox oil when I’m waiting to boot it.. or try not to. I don’t go over 3000rpm until I see 80 degrees, won’t give it a kicking until I see 90.

My oil now only reaches highs of 100 running the Millers Racing Nanodrive Oil, always below 95 on the motorway and sometimes will sit at 90 under low load. It’s nice to see that using the different oil has made the engine run cooler.

I use quantum 5w 30 from TPS, second change this year now and a doodle to do.

Was interested how hot the gearbox oil does get but I suppose you need it hooked up to vcds on a drive.

Yeah I got this mate, just to the right of the intake. I’ve always wondered what it was.

I also have Eventuri intake

Very late to the party, only just joined the forum.
Had my car in Audi today after doing a few launches last night and mine has done the same. Was a relief reading this because I thought the problem sounded a bit concerning!

Reported widely after several launches, one after another. I’ve never done more that one at a time so not experienced it.

Normal after launches or not, I’d be concerned because that oil is meant to be IN the gearbox not out haha. I’d be having levels checked...

There are breather/ catch cams that been engineered to sort this niggle out.

Yes you’d definitely need more regular oil changes. Audi made out like the oil was ******* out but in reality mine was a number or spots.

If there is supposed to be a measured amount of oil in the gearbox, and after a launch oil is leaking out of the breather, the oil level must be changing. I suppose after a number of launches the oil will stop leaking because the gearbox will be empty, problem solved

Exactly, I’d be alarmed if I saw this.. it isn’t normal to see any oil outside of the gearbox and needs replenishing.

Or as you said launch to your hearts content until the overpressure oil release is no more, can’t say you won’t have any other catastrophic issues but you won’t have a leakage problem ;)
