They do work well as a milk float.
At one of the club GTI events one of the guys brought his Tesla, Very impressive milk float.

Perfect video to get @Callump01 to drop the Tesla idea ;)

By then not the performance version of the 3. Not that I am defending Tesla’s in any way, no desire whatsoever to have/drive one of these

Same one that battered the M2 though?

But then 4WD vs RWD so always likely in a drag race

Performance version will definitely cream the RS3 though!

You may be happy to know that I've gone off the Tesla idea for a little while until they buck up the autopilot software. Recent EU laws have made using autopilot borderline dangerous in the UK imo and it was one of my primary reasons for getting one in the first place (may be doing lots more motorway miles shortly)

Still going for the test drive though :icon thumright:

That vid is weird as when I went up against a P90D in my RS4 (fastest Tesla afaik) whilst it smashed me off the line, after a car length or 2 it wasn't getting away. I can't see how that Model 3 can get away from the RS4 so easily unless it is more powerful than the fastest Tesla to date?

P100D is the fastest Tesla to date (until the new Tesla Roadster at 1.9s 0-60) and most super cars would struggle to beat that absolute monster let alone an RS3 or 4. I've been lucky enough to have a short drive/few launches in one and it's an experience out of this world. Mind boggling acceleration that quite literally takes your breath away.

Surprised you came close to a P90D though TX, it's definitely no slouch.

No it was that one, 100D. As I say it gets away very very fast but as soon as the RS4 was moving the Tesla didn't move away but I didn't catch it either.

I test drove a p100d. sure its quick, but it was horrible to drive, dreadful build quality, massive ipad is HUGE distraction-no thanks.....and at £130K ish - joke price

My wife hadn't seen one before and her words summed it up "it looks boring"....when I told her how much it was her face.....like I had run over our cats

Genuine interest - why?

TX.

Sent from my BBB100-2 using Tapatalk

The primary reason is that I do a lot of miles for work travelling about the country (and it's only getting worse atm) and the RS3 probably isn't the most sensible motorway mile muncher in the world. I think a Telsa may not only save me considerable amounts of money in fuel and tax but it'll also be more suited to my driving needs at this moment in time.

I asked Tesla for an extended test drive because I haven't really made my mind up yet about A) making the jump to an EV, and B) parting ways with my RS3.

They're both very different types of cars and I'm under no false impressions that the Tesla will offer anything close to the excitement that the RS3 does, other than raw acceleration without a glorious 5 cylinder soundtrack behind it. Just weighing up the pros and cons at the moment.

Well it will be interesting to hear what you think afterwards.

Jesus ... if you do a lot of miles @Callump01 then I would have thought the Tesla would be the last car on your list

You need to check the 'real world' range of these cars mate and consider if you are happy planning all your trips with charging stations/ stop offs etc.

Tesla cars also have a very bad rep for quality & reliability ..... just saying be aware

It depends entirely on how long the journey is between charges. With a Tesla, as long as a single journey is <150miles, you have no worries about range or stopping to use superchargers. All Tesla models will cover that sort of range in a single charge even at high motorway speeds and in the colder winter months no problem.

If for example you do as much as 100miles every day for work, that would work out at over 26k miles a year, and you could do all your charging over night using a cheap off-peak energy tariff, like Octopus' GO tariff, which charges just £0.05/kWh between 00:30-04:30. 4hours would get you 28kWh, which would easily recover the energy spent driving 100miles that day.

The fuel savings are quite staggering when you look at it over a year. According to fuel economy,26k miles per year at 50MPG and £1.30/lt would be £3k in annual fuel costs. In contrast the Tesla would cost around £350 per year in additional electricity costs.

Fair comment ... I just think with electric cars you seriously need to go in knowing that you have to plan charging on a regular basis.

Its far from established in my eyes - maybe in 10 years from now - but the infrastructure is nowhere near where it needs to be for it to be considered anything close to petrol or diesel - plus the tesla quality and reliability issues would concern me.

Those that want to be early adopters go for it, just be aware of its limitations is all I say.

Generally my journeys that I do to London and Manchester are between 150 and 200 miles one way, but I always stop for an hour or so at the services for a rest on longer journeys so it wouldn't bother me if I had to hook up a Tesla to a charging point for that duration. There are charging points at almost every motorway services, plus they're at a lot of the hotels I stay at and they've started fitting them 2 minutes away from my house. I'd also be fitting a high amp charging station at my house for £1k after the gov grant which isn't too bad. I don't think running out of charge will be too much of an issue for me, but I agree that there could still be more of a push to get some more charging points out.

I had heard Tesla's have some quality and reliability issues though; a friend of mine with a P100D has been broken down on the side of the road once or twice during his year ownership so I can definitely see that being the case. It's something i'll need to do my research on before considering signing on the dotted line.

I'll see how the extended test drive goes I suppose!

Charging patterns are going to be extremely user specific, and will depend on the charging you have available to you, the type of EV you own and the journey's you do. You would need to visit a petrol station just as often if you do 150-200miles a day in a RS3...!

Charging infrastructure is definitely not established, I completely agree....for EV's that are not Tesla's!
Tesla's on the other hand have an incredibly abundant, reliable and incredibly fast charging network that shows how EV ownership can work. It is the reason to choose a Tesla over any other EV. They also happen to make some of the fastest, most technologically advanced and efficient EV's as well....It is quite staggering how far ahead of the competition they are, and it's not until you have a deeper understanding of EV ownership that it becomes apparent.

Are you going for one of the newer 'Raven' models of the P100D, or are you looking at an older model? I think there is a promotion where they are offering free supercharging on inventory models at the moment, so that would be a massive benefit for you if you are going to regularly charge during stops. The latest version can manage 250mile range at 75MPH speeds, and a supercharger will get you from 10-80% in around 45mins, so I don't think you will have any issues with range.

£1k for a charge port fitting is very expensive...? What unit are you looking at?

Have fun with the test drive :)

Darn, I was hoping nobody chased me up on this... I hope I don't get battered too hard but these are my honest thoughts.

So I've been lucky enough to have the P100D (or Tesla Model S Ludicrous Performance I think it's called now) from Thursday until early Saturday afternoon and during that time I put a good few hundred miles on the car and really stretched it's legs on both some twisty Welsh mountain roads, and some boring motorways. I spent time at several superchargers from Bridgend to Bristol and really got a feel for how day-to-day life would be with charging, along with getting the chance to speak to a few actual owners.

I am truly and utterly blown away. It really is an amazing car - the sheer performance just leaves you breathless and planting my right foot never seemed to get old. I have never experienced a car take off with such pace and little effort like that Tesla did. I could be doing 70 MPH on the motorway, plant my foot and get up to some silly speeds in the blink of an eye without realizing it. No downshift, no waiting for a turbo... just immediate and brutal torque propelling you forward and pinning you to the seat.

In the corners of some mountain roads, it felt planted. I didn't have as much confidence as I do with my RS, but I think that's partly down to the fact that it wasn't my (very expensive) car to be slamming around corners and I was very mindful of the fact that it weighs well over 2 tonnes; but despite this it still felt rather agile for what is quite a large car. The steering feel was OK but didn't feel as direct as my RS does.

Speaking as a fellow petrol-head, what I felt would be the biggest downfall for me (the noise) turned out to not bother me as much as I thought it would. Of course it's still no 5 cylinder soundtrack, but the completely ludicrous performance just made up for it in my eyes. Your mileage may vary here, but I personally feel like I could transition from a PCW modded RS3 to a silent Tesla without issue.

I will say that the interior did not feel like it was over £100,000 - you can get far better for the money from Audi or Porshe, but it still did not phase me at all. The IT geek in me was just fascinated by the absolutely enormous tablet that sits in your view that controls most of the cars functions and has some cool little easter eggs and games which my little niece loved, along with built-in Spotify Premium that is included.

Overall I'd say the RS and the Tesla are two very, very different cars. The RS might not be as quick as the Tesla but it certainly beats it in the sound department. Personally that's a trade off that I am willing to make for a mind-mindbogglingly quick car with low (or free?) tax, zero servicing and zero 'fuel' cost to run (chargers are free for life with the Model S)

I handed the keys back on Saturday, jumped straight back into my RS and for the first time in my RS ownership - I hated my entire 1 hour drive home.

So with all that said... I'm very much leaning towards putting the RS up for sale in the next couple of weeks and making the jump to an EV. I'm speaking to dealerships at the moment about a potential sale or return agreement.

Oh and if you're looking at one for a company car @A4B9 then it may be worth mentioning that in addition to the cheap (or free?) tax, servicing and 'fuel' costs, from April 2020 it'll also have 0% benefit in kind.

If you have any specific questions you'd like answering then feel free to ask away.

Certainly one of the better looking Tesla’s I’ve seen. I’ll be picking up my new toy in the next week or two (I’ll let you guess for a bit!) and it’s most definitely not electric...

Keep us updated if you do take the plunge!

P100D and RS3 aren't in same price bracket though so hardly competitors? Surely a M5C or a RS6 is its competition?

Interesting review Callum, while I have no doubt that the tesla is insanely quick I just can't fathom driving an electric car. In 30 years all cars will be that way and the likes of the rs3, c63, etc will be gone aside from some collections and we'll look back at youtube video's listening to how real cars used to sound and reminisce.

No amount of soundaktor and artificial sounds will ever replace the raspy bark of an rs3 or the brute force of an amg, or the screaming of a lambo. Frankly the tesla could take 1 second to 100 and do the quarter mile in 4 and I wouldn't even look at it...

Not sure how old you are but if you've still got some years left I'd say wait it out because in the future you won't have the option to pick between the two
