I recently had my oil low warning light pop up, the oil was 1/3 between the min and max. I topped up around 750ml and now the oil is 1/3 above max. Should I be concerned?.
 
I wouldn't personally be worried.....but I think it is strange that your low oil warning came on when the level was not below the minimum mark.
For the future never put in so much all at once. Do it in smaller amounts and check the level as you go.

Cheers mate, will do. My car seems to be drinking quite alot, ive only had it for over a month, and have been checking the oil every 2 weeks but will defo only add small amounts, but its always inconsistent with the readings at times it shows medium then randomly it shows high then its shows low, Ive been checking if after the oil has reached optimum driving temperature around 105c and i let it sit for 30+ minutes and check it, is this the correct way?.
 
There is nothing wrong with your checking method, it should give an accurate reading as long as the car is on level ground. :)

My oil light came on the other day as well, had about 1/3 in too. I just popped a litre in and I'll keep any eye on it.
 
I was under the impression you should check the oil level when the engine is cold, as if you do it when the engine is hot/warm the level will appear higher as it would have expanded with the heat of the engine, same as when checking tyre pressures straight after driving.

It is perfectly acceptable to check the oil level with the engine hot or cold Adam, just make sure it has been turned off long enough for it to drain back down into the sump.
Actually you are more likely to get a slightly higher reading when the car has been sitting overnight for example.

You are absolutely correct about tyre pressures, always check when cold to get the most accurate reading. This is when the manufacturers recommended pressures are taken.

That's how it was when I started driving and the way I've always done it - But not anymore apparently - You now check it hot so it's expanded etc _ I checked the online video and spoke to my mate who is a mastertech and hot is now the correct way
 
Oil consumption can be resolved by switching to 5w-40.

My car used a fair bit before I changed and doesn't use a drop between services now.

I use Shell Helix Ultra (VW 502.00)

If your oil level is above 1/3rd when cold on a level surface that is way too much oil added and can lead to engine damage, drain/syphon the excess asap. This is true even for heavy oil consumption. I assume when you state 1/3rd that is looking at the same distance on the dipstick between low and max as a measurement.
You have only had the car for a month, check your oil once every week over a month, always with the same method cold or hot (after resting for 15-30 minutes) on a level surface. Some engines due possibly to incorrect break in procedure will have not properly bedded in piston rings and this is can lead to high oil consumption. High oil consumption according to Audi is less than 700 miles a litre, which is a crock of ----.
Personally, on a brand new engine I break the engine in with this method .....after pick up of new car. The next day I get the engine oil temp up to operating temperature (about 100 celsius on an S3) and find a quiet road put car in second gear and then from 2,000 with full acceleration to about 5,700 and then coast down to 1ooo rpm and repeat this two more times. In auto trans cars use manual mode and engage second gear and do the same.
This sounds scary, but it is not, if done on an engine at operating temperature. The piston rings will now be bedded. My 2017 S3 uses little to no oil after 2 yearly oil changes. Never below 8 tenths of max mark.
The biggest issue with break in and afterwards is using full welly on a dead cold engine, especially in the winter time. My car can take up to 10-15 minutes to reach oil operating temperature in the dead of winter.

I had 5w-40 used for my service on 2nd April and light has come on again to check oil. Would have only done 2k ish miles.
