Long time lurker first time poster!

I’ve got an S4 Avant B8.5 (2015) and I’m looking at upgrading the rear indicators to have the swipe/dynamic feature.

From what I gather I’d need a module, something like this?
https://www.advanced-incar.co.uk/products/audi-retrofits/audi-rear-dynamic-indicator-light-modules/

But would it also involve purchasing b9 rear cluster and would they even fit on my B8.5? Or is there another way to upgrade?

Ps here’s a pic of me motor

For me a couple of possible issues:-
1) A4 is not on their list
2) These are not truly sweeping indicator mod kits, all they are doing is delaying when the first section of LEDs and the second section of LEDs are switched on!

Always assuming it was possible, it’s not something I’d be rushing to spend £400 on. That’s close to the cost of a stage one remap. Each to their own, but I’ll take an extra 60BHP over trick rear lights all day long.

I agree with you there but the car is still under warranty for another year (came with extended warranty) so not going to look BHP increase until then. But when that comes was just gonna go straight to stage2. As the car came with sport diff so want to take full advantage of that!!!!

Thought it would be a nice mod but looks like it would be more pain than it’s worth. Went for carbon wing mirrors instead of silver.

Side question if I start looking at tuning is there a way to keep the super charger wine the same level as stock? Just not too keen on how that sounds on the videos I’ve watch of tuned S4’s

You're totally right, I saw some more obvious videos of other that did one after the other but these looked like the proper sweeping!! Not interested if it's just that certainly for that price!!!

Just my opinion but some mods are easily done and some are not. This, from what I have read, is in the latter category. I'd spend the money on something else. :)

I feel that there are 2 schools of thought over dynamic indicators:- those who LOVE them and those that HATE them.

So, initially when I first found this mod, I thought, "I like that", then read about this dynamic indicating did not comply with current UK road vehicle regs, though I don't think that anyone is taking action over that as some newer foreign sourced buses and trucks come with them now - so I think that the situation is, if anyone gets round to updating the UK road vehicle regs, then they will include the fitting and operating of dynamic indicators, as they are, in my mind a very effective improvement over the older fixed single flasher at each side and end of a vehicle and maybe one in between. Then I looked very carefully at these mods and all of them just split the 2 sections of the LEDs - so no smooth sweep, just a delay - and then the cost!

So, I immediately located the memory location in my brain that covered these first "I like that" thoughts, and recoded it with "what a lot of rubbish" - so I'm sorted now!

The "beauty" of buying a VW Group car with this feature fitted at factory is, you can disable "dynamik" using VCDS.

I don't hate them but I do think they are pointless. If they are part of the standard features of a car then find. But to actually pay to fit something which you never see yourself, unless you are testing them or your car has just been stolen, seems crazy to me.

BTW any mod can affect warranty including this one, so be careful - do you really want to have that argument with a dealer that your dynamic light mod didn't cause something else in the electrical system to fail? Also any mod needs to be declared to your insurer, including this one. And some insurers have a zero mod policy and will cancel yours, forcing you to get modified car insurance.

I agree they are pointless, and unless they're required under some new EU directive, I can't help thinking there are better things for manufacturers to spend their development budgets on.

You could run with my idea ;)

(I've had ****** all chance of doing anything else with this, was going to built it into the light board for the bike carrier for a laugh as a first attempt)

Ps SNAP on the car front, exactly the same as mine :)

I spotted what you'd done with your light strip, when I was searching if there was an easy way to do this. Very good use for an arduino not played around with one of those in a while, still have a spare one kicking about!!! Might join your project and make the most illegal rear lights possible lol!! ps SNAP :rockwoot:

tbh honest I was more seeing if there was a simple method, it's no big deal I can totally live without them. Just going to have to wait for the warranty to run out and start looking at APR vs Revo and all that jazz which I'm sure is another can of worms!!!

If you are looking for them at a lot less than £400, then how about these?:
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Semi-Dynamic-Indicator-Modules-Audi-A4-S4-RS4-Avant-B8-Facelift-B8-5/153462408654?hash=item23bb1285ce:g:2QEAAOSwcSxaYhIT
Yes, they are "semi" dynamic, but each to their own.

Subject to cost, I can do this like I did on my A3 tail light.

In the video I am using only 60 LED/m but I have done it with 144LED/m which basically looks like a light bar with no spacing

Personally, I quite like the mod but the only reason I didn't do it is because of the fact that I can't see it but then there are a lot of, "I can't see it mods" that we all have done. Like paying over £600 for a Carbon Fibre diffuser that I can't see while driving or £1k-ish for new alloys that I can see only when the car is parked or CF mirror covers or the smoked lights... Or the blacked out Audi or Supercharged badges instead of V6T, colour changing of alloys or calipers and the list goes on. None of these add to the Performance of the car. It just makes the car look more like, "it's my car now".

Same applies to the argument where, "I am not doing it because it didn't come factory fitted".

If the OP likes DIs then does it matter what we say?? OP ignore all of the 'against' comments and just go and do it If you are around the area you can always ask @DJAlix or @Ash187 if they'd be able to do it for you.

@Tashfeen cheers, it’s ok things like this are like marmite. Love it or hate it. I just think they look cool and couldn’t find much info on converting/swapping b8.5 lights and wanted to see potential costs/methods involved!

@aqibi2000 that looks cool, I’m pretty nifty with a soldering iron but not looked into the electronics of how rear lights work in terms of picking up their signals, also with the avant it goes across 2 lights so that would be an extra complexity!! Or actually do they get away with that on the b9 and just do it on the outer light only!

It’s not just soldered together I wrote the code to control the segments on an ARM microprocessor to read in the states of the indicator signal, on Audi you have 4 portions that need to be working together. It’s RGB so does reverse as well.

Interesting what do you end up coding it in? And where does it live when it’s executed, is it an arduino or something?

I’m a software dev so be interested to know :)

Arduino

"I can't see it mods" that we all have done.
Luckily I must have that gene missing. But I admit that I retrofitted a TV tuner to my B5 S4 more for the love of doing it than actually wanting to watch TV in my car. Just as well because I still had that car when the analogue transmissions were turned off...

@aqibi2000 you picking up the signals from the CAN bus? I see there's an arduino CAN bus shield?
Or just intercepting the signals to the lights?
