Have you heard the S4/S5 rumour...

It will feel a quicker car in normal driving for sure but the S4 S5 petrol sound so good! Expecting fake quad pipes also.

I've kept level with an s4 with my tuned 272 so I'm sure the new tdi version will out perform it.

However like u said it's not all about numbers, it's about how it makes you feel, the sound, the higher rpm range and the experience.

With the v6 tdi it's just about a huge endless wave of torque that's not always easy to put down unless your on a motorway with no cars about..

Speaking of sound I think the new s5 will sound at least half decent, not as good as the petrol but if uv heard the old sq5 and the current sq7 they sound really good, almost a v8 like sound even though it's fake.

63500 euros seems a huge price hike.

ECU's locked down in S and RS cars, tuning potential is limited.

Yeah, for now a tuning box will suffice. The v6 tdi has been around for ages though.

I don't know how the new tech works though with these fancy compressors assisting the engine.

Not sure if it complicates the tuning potential

Massive hike. I remember looking at an S5 coupe on car wow for 41k less than a year ago

This equates to approx £55k. Original B9 S5 was about £48k so £7k increase! Assume new S4 will be about £52k. Maybe with discount will be approx £47k?

So the rumours are now showing to be true!

As a diesel fan myself, well I'd say mainly 6 cylinder diesels n above I'm impressed but at the same time I don't see why they'd choose that to replace the petrol. It's beyond me.

Knowing my 272 is supposedly tuned to 320ps and 700nm with the 3 mods I have I can safely say I have the closest feel to what this s5 tdi will be like albeit without the cool electric assistance and synthetic sound!

Mid range torque and off the line acceleration is mighty, so as much as the petrol fans will be dissapointed by this news, I don't think its all negative.

I think owners of tuned v6 tdis, sq5,7s will know the potential of these engines and how they translate on to the road.

I also think it will do 0 60 in less than what's quoted.

Ive personally recorded a 4.8 second 0 60 time flat out on mine and with launch control that's 4.4, and the launch control time was recorded 2 years ago. I'm sure it's improved since then too.. So with an extra 30bhp plus an electric compressor I can easily see this being much faster than 4.8 seconds.

I also wonder what the tuning capability will be, 400bhp 800nm? That would be mental on a car that size.

Anyway, I feel bad for the petrol fans as they really should have just offered it a long side the petrol s5 and maybe bumped up the power a bit on the petrol to make up for the torque deficit.

These wltp emissions then?

If the rs4 engine is still being produced maybe they could have detuned that for the s4/s5? Just my thoughts..
Yeah that's my thoughts entirely on this too. A boon for diesel fans. At least they're represented now in the segment. But it's mad. M340i or C43.

Or just bag a used petrol one. They really should hold their value now though. I thought the facelift was going to have the new A6 style interior. But it doesn't. So, these petrol models are going to hold really really well IMO.

If I dont extend my S5 lease 340i is tempting

Hitting it again! Well. It's drawing an end to this massive thread question I guess. It shows how many people have taken an active interest in this though. Sad times.

haha I do my best. Though I don’t think the S5s pictured in that mighty tome of a release are the facelift. So, they’ve not actually managed to put the new engine into the new car yet. Which means they will appear and disappear (like the RS5 Sportback - which will be on sale for only a few months before being withdrawn for the facelift next year).

That’s the rear of the facelift S5 cabrio, which a spotter in Germany sent to me over the weekend. FYI

They’ve really lost the plot with this. Blatantly trying to feed us nonsense that the diesel is a deliberate choice when we all know the Americans will get the petrol and it’s all down to WLTP rules.

Sales of these will fall like a stone within the the traditional demographic but may be offset by diesel fans who’ve previously wanted an S car.

Helps RS owners like me have a further distinction between our ms and S cars but I can’t help the feeling that Audi are treating us all like mugs.

So, it's virtually certain now that the S4 will have the same Diesel engine, as my dealer said back in January. I wonder when the S4 will be released? I ordered my lease over a year ago now and, with price protection, I guess it will be an even better deal than it was already. But if the S5 is being released in May, I'm still none-the-wiser as to when the S4 will be out?!

As the A4, and the A5 is receiving a major facelift at either the end of this year, or early next, I very much doubt, or be very surprised, if 'S' models with the oil burners will be released before then. Audi have a habit of releasing 'S' versions after the 'A' ones have been out.
But then I have been proved wrong once or twice...

I guess I'll continue to sit tight then. The news on the major facelift has been about as clear as the news on the S model engines though! Some 'news' has suggested definitely 2020; others, the end of the year / early next; and still others Q3 (August / September) this year!

Yep, don't put any good money on it, Audi are in a world of their own at the moment...

Not like you to be so complimentary ;-)

I have heard some (like SQ5 diesel) will be made available in summer for Sept/Oct delivery but who knows

Well, September would be good as my 'two year' Golf R lease will need its first MOT at the end of the month!

I don't know about the SQ5, and if it is going to get the same interior upgrade as other models. But who would want to buy a diesel S4, or S5, in May knowing that a proper facelift is on it's way a few months later which would immediately knock hundreds off the resell value...

They should have detuned the rs4 and put that in the s4,s5?
Nope, the S4 (Audi) & RS4 (Porsche) ICE were built for VAG corporate going forward. Hence cross divisions and accepting mild-hybrid etc.

Trivia - isn't Audi mild-hybrid an absolute joke!!!! Their version is 48V system using lithium batteries (of which there was an Audi Media Centre release recently where Audi are seriously looking at recycling used batteries). Mercedes with their mild-hybrid code 256 3.0 straight six, as in C53 & E53's, have the 48V system replacing the alternator, A/C pump, water pump etc belt/s to release previously lost engine power.

Diesel no use for low millage owners. Makes no sense at all.
I can tell you Audi's reply: care factor = <zero.
Audi is an auto manufacturer. Say no more.

Firmly believe Audi has a real problem with the forthcoming Euro benchmarks for emissions, but particularly fuel consumption. Shortly there will be TDI's for S4, S5, SQ5, S6, S7, SQ7 & S8 (when released). No sign of TDI's in 'RS' models. One rule is that Audi has to achieve the benchmark being an average of its entire fleet models. Perhaps Euro "S" owners have been sacrificed for the gas guzzling "RS" owners (feeling good 'terminator x') & Rest of World Petrol "S" owners. Also believe TDI's will be introduced mid-production run, ASAP.

It certainly makes sense to make the move to TDI ASAP if the main reason is as described (and that does make sense too!) - why wait for new models / facelifts if the matter is so pressing as to justify a move to diesel in the first place? I suspect you're absolutely right - they can't make the move quick enough to hit emissions and consumption targets.

As always depends on deals available, but equally plenty will be waiting to change, some enforced due to end of lease etc, and whilst Audi will
Lose some there will be plenty others that will buy

It is basically an anti-lag system for the turbocharger: At low revs before the turbocharger is spinning fast enough to create charge pressure, the electric compressor creates it instead. Once the turbocharger is up to speed the compressor will stop.

But this (using a diesel engine) has to be temporary anyway because not only do electric motors totally eliminate lag and have the best torque curve of all engines, but they solve the emissions problems too.

O/T but any more news re the new A3 model? Thought we would see it at Geneva ...

Well, Evo’s just reiterated that the A4 is due its model change THIS summer, if you believe that?!
“The S5 is otherwise unchanged, Audi taking the decision not to hold the new TDI powertrain back until the A5’s upcoming mid-life refresh. We also expect this engine to be carried across to the new S4 and S4 Avant, when the A4 gets its own mid-life update this summer. UK prices and specifications have yet to be announced, but expect a slight jump over the current S5’s £49k price point.”

It’s slower if you look at the Stats. Anyway petrol always outperforms diesels especially in higher speeds. Audi really have gone a step backwards.
