Hope Audi have the new S3 out before 2022. Same for the next Focus RS. Otherwise we all might as well buy 1.0l Fiesta's.

Think car manufacturers will sell shed load of car in 2021. Sales collapse in 2022.

The end is Nigh for the motor car, and any resemblance of driving pleasure.

Sad sad news

Think I might keep my s3 a bit longer now. It might go up in value cause of this.
Speed limiting doesn’t work. You look at some work vans that’s limited to 62mph and all the drivers do is drive flat out everywhere they go.
There’s 2 ends of the spectrum as well. Slow drivers can cause accidents too so are they going to do a minimum limit on certain roads too?
I used to drive a lot and there’s always some idiot doing 50mph on the outside lane in a 3 lane motorway or lorries hogging all 3 lanes trying to overtake each other when they are limited to 56mph. These folk create frustration and cause accidents as well.

Even with a no deal brexit we will still follow a lot of the European rules/regs like lemmings. Lose lose situation.
Remaps and ecu corrections will become more widespread.

Surely this will create a hell of a lot more congestion on our already heavily congested roads.

But aren't ECU's getting harder to crack on new cars?

Our only hope is the might of the German car industry get's this quashed.

I'm a fan of the sign recognition tech in my current Golf. However, as the article states, it's far from perfect. Example: I drive past a supermarket entrance and there is a sign up for 10km/h. This is within view from the main road and close enough for my car to recognise it as the speed limit and it throws up the 10 sign on the dash display. Imagine my car slamming on the brakes by itself to drive 10km/h in a 90km/h zone LOL

I reported about this bull***t a few weeks ago and it seems that most people simply don't care. We're all going to be leaving our safety and decisions to machines soon, which in the end will create an even more brainwashed society. I'm keeping my car and don't give a f*** about these new rules. I simply don't understand why we let these morons dictate how we should live our lives. Incredibly sad times to live in and the worst is yet to come.

No point in looking at high performance cars in a few years - RS and S models. In fact no point in anything capable of over 70 mph :crying: Many thanks to those nice people in Brussels. :whistle2:

Does also say "A full on/off switch for the system is also envisaged, but this would lapse every time the vehicle is restarted."

Quite.

I don't think that remembering to turn it off before you go anywhere is too onerous, all things considered.

No more difficult than turning the radio on, at any rate...

.

If I keep my old diesel long enough it could become one of the fastest cars on the roads :racer:

It will be no good if you can’t buy any diesel. After diesel gate diesel will be phased out very quickly.

Still, there are some "positive" aspects. With British Summer Time being banned soon, it will be very convenient to have a radio controlled clock controlled centrally by Brussels :playful: :smile new:

"The EU says the plan could help avoid 140,000 serious injuries by 2038 and aims ultimately to cut road deaths to zero by 2050". This is a pipe dream. It doesnt stop stupid / incompetent driving, in fact most of the worst driving I see is done by people doing less than the speed limit anyway.

Pull the Speedo cable. old school way of doing things

Pleased I'm not the only one who used to do that. Don't think it's that simple on new cars though. Especially all these VC screens.

Who under pressure from the likes of `Brake` have caved in. Yet another example of Governments listening only to the minority and acting upon it.

As we have recently seen when the majority of people want something, they simple get ignored !

Do modern cars have speedo cables?
I done this on my car and bike back in the late 80's early 90's, but didn't think it was quite that simple nowadays.

It will be probably be an electronic signal that will need intercepted with something like a resistor. Kinda like some of the vim workarounds if software isn’t an option.

This subject is being talked about everywhere at the moment.....and rightly so given its implications. :openmouth:
Other places I have seen don't seem to understand much about it and are making comments that don't even relate to it, but I'm happy to see we have actually read up on it here. :)
The most concerning aspect of this should be the "black box". You have one incident and they will most likely go through this with a fine tooth comb and potentially nail you on other things. It will also become a part of the MOT check list.
I know it says a "full on/off switch" is envisaged with its functionality operating the same as current start/stop systems, but to my mind this would be stupid and effectively make the system useless because the majority would simply turn it off like some do with start/stop. I wouldn't be at all surprised if this option is not there when the system rolls out.

The word "Envisaged" says it all. Use this term so people don't kick up much of a fuss, as they'll think, `I'll just turn it off`, then once it's rolled out, the `Envisaged` off switch won't be there !!

maybe VCDS will help leave it in the off state by default like the stop start but i wouldnt bet on it.

I also suspect we will have to justify to our insurers why on day X at time B we were speeding...

I doubt any system would rely on sign recognition. My old Tomtom satnav knew when speed limits changed and displayed them 10+ years ago.

It's all scaremongering "could" at the moment anyway. Car manufacturers are sizeable players in the world economy and motorists a rich revenue source.

If this does become law Many car manufacturers will go out of business ie the likes of Porsche ,Ferrari, Lamborghini, catherham etc. May as well buy An Audi With the lowest engine power . Will this mean Rs or S cars will stop being produced ? As I don’t see the point of buying a performance car if you can’t use it .

There a couple of roads locally where the speed limit from the map (allegedly up to date according to Audi) is wrong and it is only when the camera sees a repeater sign does it correct itself. These aren't recently changed limits either.

Anybody who has had the misfortune to drive along the new 50 limits on the M27 where the new 'smart' motorway works are starting will know that enforced speed limit adherence hasn't exactly improved driving standards

Another EU "product" that no one wants yet will come in a anyway regardless. If only we could vote these tw*ts out :innocent:

S4 and RS4 not cracked 18 months down the line, triple encrypted is the rumour.

You could have as there are (perhaps unsurprisingly) elections for the European parliament (who will vote on these proposals) every few years, however we seem to be making to great efforts to avoid holding these in the UK this June.

Last time I checked Junker etc weren't elected, I have great faith in them looking after me though :(

Nor do I - but we do/did have 73 MEPs who could have voted against it.

If you read up on Junker in particular it sounds like a "stitch up" as 25 of 27 EU leaders voted for him with DC being one who didn't.

Well we still have some sanity in Canada and the USA.....sign reading technology is not available as of this date on any car sold here, maybe in the future, but I doubt it, as Yanks do not like big brother looking at you with cameras etc. Many provinces and states have no camera enforced radar speed areas , only police enforced radar traps who stop you on infraction.
To be very honest technology is taking over with lane departure, auto braking, auto radar controlled speed that all rely on an ECU to make the decisions.
Methinks, that is not a good thing, Boeing 737 max 8!? It also makes for not very attentive drivers and this technology in is it's infancy. I constantly see vehicles wandering in their lanes, as lane departure only seems to take affect after the vehicle has crossed the lane.
Just wait till some crackpot hacks these systems, when your car goes in for servicing.
