Hello
In the morning I’ve turned the engine on, the dash didn't work. No speedo, rev counter, fuel gauge, km counter or clock. The warning lights all work as in ESP and airback and parking, indicator lights work as to headlights. The stereo lights up but the light in the centre compartment doesn't??

“I’ve had a water leak from the sunroof rain drain to the passenger side footwell and after that the cluster started to go crazy “

What should I do, get a new instrument cluster?
And in that case do I need to reprogram it and can I do it with VagCom?
If anyone have done it, a help will be Appreciated!

You can code instruments to your car but you may need Vagcommander or vagtacho - never tried with vcds from scratch with a replacement instrument. Have you found and fixed the leak? The instruments are coded to your vin number, swapping them is not trivial to do

Thanks for the reply, yeah solved the leak it was the sunroof rain drain!

I’ve done some research’s yesterday and found someone with similar problem as mine:

“I had a very similar problem and it was moisture that attacked the central convenience module located right hand side behind side panel in the boot...take it off clean and wd40 the connectors, the washer pipe for the rear windscreen runs above the unit and can leak causingthese problems......also check for any water in the boot.”

Going for it and I’ll update if it works!

Great stuff mate, it is more likely to be the CCM than the instruments them selves as they display data but get it from other controllers...and it's known the rear washer can flood the boot area if the jets get blocked and the pipe blows off.

Don't use WD40 use electrical contact cleaner. Oil can cause connection issues in electrical contacts by coating them, it isn't conductive. Ask anyone who got it on the points of the dizzy in the bad old days lol

I’ve had the car checked with VCDS, I’ll upload the scan in a moment + had the CCM Removed...looks in great condition from the outside!

TBH it could have got a short from water leakage on other areas, but has the car been clocked at all, as those instrument & immo errors are also when a car has had mileage adapted, that's not to say this isn't also related to other issues, its just a side note.

So the car starts then dies after 2-5 seconds?

Hello!
Yeah at the beginning it started out like that” starts and cut off after 2 sec” but now it stays on! But other than the warning signs nothing works.

Sounds like things have been fried from the water ingress. You may have to start substituting modules and clearing errors till you get all faulty items out of the picture. Can you get hold of some second hand bits to try? Your lighting switch for a start. It's showing bad on the scan and my get you a bit further on if replaced with an eBay item, no coding required.

The cutting out is likely due to the immobiliser and cluster errors too btw. I'd swap the light switch, clear down the errors, maybe even a battery disconnect reset, then start it and see what a scan reports after that. Some of those errors are years old so would be good to start with a clean slate.

A lot of the newer errors could be from water affecting the canbus comms. If addresses are indistinct or corrupted over the canbus wiring then crazy stuff will be coming up.

Something else to try, if you have a driveway or garage, get a 10L dehumidifier from b&q or Homebase, sit it in the car on the back seat, run it to a power extension and set to the lowest setting like 40% and run it with the doors shut for a day, check the tank and I bet it dries everything out nicely

Light switch is disconnected because I was about to remove the CCM. I got a new one today replaced it still nothing changed

Thanks for the reply, I will try it!
About the errors, most of them because I’ve took the interior a part, dried it as good as I could.
Got a used CCM installed it nothing’s changed same scan same errors codes

This is precisely an immobiliser symptom, personally wouldn’t feel too comfortable driving a car knowing it could stall randomly due to corrosion damage to cluster.

At work (will keep the OEM anonymous) we disconnect the cluster with engine running so that another cluster can be plugged in without having a paired immobiliser for the sake of testing.

Yeah me too, could you please suggest what should I be looking for to repair based on the story and the Vag scan ?

These clusters are relatively easy to program in, I can usually code the immobiliser side by post for future reference and then just some vcds adaptions at the car to finish up. Would be interested in seeing the inside of the damaged cluster. I had similar on a skoda octavia this week left a nasty mess!

No problem as soon as I get my hand on the damaged cluster

Hi @Adilk667,

I'm just wondering how all this worked out- did the new cluster fix the problem?

I've got exactly the same issue:
Display cluster needles and DIS have failed- but the warning lights function fine.
Car starts fine and can even be driven.

The VCDS readout is very similar to yours:

I'm guessing I'm going to need a new instrument cluster too so I'll order one in- but if there's anything further to do for the installation... Is it plug and play or does it need to be paired to the vehicle with VCDS?

Any suggestions would be v much appreciated.

Many thanks, Zap

Sorry if this is a bit late (four years ago), but I have fried my Cluster and wiring loom - plug into cluster melted! (another story). Anyway, re Instrument Cluster swap, what process was followed? Can it be done with VCDS? I read all the issues and some posts state success without actually explaining what the solution was. Grasping!
