S4 will be a petrol. the V6 petrol engine will be available to order soon for the A6/A7 so just a mater of time before S4 will be available for order. Screen shot of A6 trim and engines below... Nice to see that you can get an A6 in petrol again.

I recently read an Australian review of the A7 55 TFSI and that had a 7sp s-tronic so not a typo

I’m pretty sure the Panamera uses the double clutch gearbox across the range, even in the higher output variants where Audi has said they use the ZF because of the torque.

According to What Car's review of the Porsche Panamera an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic. Perhaps they are shoe horning the engine and gearbox into an Audi...

Yes but as everyone knows the s-tronic could handle the torque. That was just Audi's excuse to move to the ZF because the early s-tronic boxes had been such a problem. Based on this forum (which I accept is not necessarily a true picture of reality), a number of people have complained about lag in the ZF. Whereas they now have enough experience to show that they finally fixed the s-tronic of its problems. To me it is believable that rather than just sort out their ZF problems (which seem likely to be due to their own control SW), they may actually go back to the s-tronic, at least for some of their models.
Just speculation (but no worse that the speculation about the diesel engine).
Based upon this forum, for some, the lag has not been fixed with the stronic gearboxes. Even reviewers are making references to this. However the early failures seem to have been largely eradicated.

I don't find the ZF "laggy" although it can be a bit lazy in the lower gears if just mooching around. Hit dynamic and use the paddles and it never feels laggy or lazy imho.

We 2.9 RS4 chaps live on a different planet though TX - the ZF 8 speed's characteristics are perfectly matched to the engine, if just mooching through town it behaves like an old style lazy 3 speeder, just lean a teeny weeny bit harder on the accelerator and it's tearing through the available ratios with no hint of hesitation and then there's S mode - that's just nuts. Maybe one of Audi's all time greatest road cars?

The new S6 and S7 will be available this May, both diesels. Every single person I’ve spoken to in the last 4 months since my Instagram first broke this news has said the whole range from S4 and above will be going diesel, citing Audi U.K. and Audi Germany as the sources. A disclaimer here that I have heard variations of the details, but the overwhelming consensus is that the S range is going diesel (but not in the USA, which accounts for the TFSI S models we’ve seen being tested). This info comes from their training meetings. There are a few theories; perhaps they’ve not managed to get the post-WLTP TFSI petrol engines to perform the way they’d like them to; perhaps Audi has been given Porche’s sloppy seconds now they’ve dumped TDI; perhaps Germans With Spreadhseets simply think TDI S models are a good idea. The very latest I heard - today - is that it’s interim.

I've swung both ways in this thread. I can see the views of both sides but on a personal level I'd be disappointed if they went TDI.
We do know the USA is petrol though as those MY19 "facelift" cars are already with dealers and customers. From what I can tell the front bumper lower lip and side inserts are the only change.

Thank you! Yes, I nearly fell off my TV chair as well when I heard it from my first source. But then the network of 6 car-paps who live round the Ring and Ingolstadt started to hear it (literally) and then a shed load of dealers came back from their Munich Etron training with the news. I’ve given up asking about whether they’ve misheard, because dealers from all over the country are DMing with the same story. Well almost... The S6 and S7 is the most frequently named, and there seems to be a view that it’s the S4 and above. But it’s hard to get the definitive. Of course, we’ve known the SQ8 will be TDI for a while and frankly that seems sensible.
Now, I also hear a load of rubbish. One young dealer was in touch last week very excitedly because his biz manager had told him the RS models would be bitdi. I told him his boss was pulling his leg, but he thought he had the scoop of 2019. After a week of it, he conceded with lots of grace that his gaffer had indeed been winding him up.
Finally, let’s not forget though that there’s been trouble at mill with the A4 this last 18 months with seemingly 2 facelifts being prepared almost simultaneously (the latest, with the A4 now having a variation of the A7 front and rear lights) all due to Audi being caught on the hop with their competition intel.
I get the feeling that so many changes at the top - four chief engineers, 2 CEOs, 3 heads of Audi Sport all since 2015/dieselgate/WLTP/head first into EV... is taking a bit of a toll, but that’s a further discussion.

I mean the font lower air intakes / or radar domes depending on spec. Now being trimmed in a U shape design as per A4.

The S4 diesel rumour is mentioned in the latest Evo magazine (page 146, issue 259 - I subscribe and it landed on the doormat yesterday). Its mentioned in an RS4 Fast Fleet article. It makes it clear it’s just a rumour ... but Evo are very well connected. Just sayin’
