Tyre Pressure Indicator Sensitivity?

I took delivery of a 35 TFSI black edition at the weekend. I was out this afternoon and parked on a gravel car park. Came back and started the engine to be greeted with a tyre pressure warning. I had a quick look at the tyres and all looked ok so reset the values and drove home cautiously.

I've just checked them and they are all set differently. 1 was 41.5, and lowest was 38. I'll change them to 39 at the front and 36 at the back as per the recommendation in the door.

This is my first Audi so wanted to know if the pressure indicator is a bit sensitive or is it pretty reliable? I have a bit of tyre pressure OCD so hopefully it's pretty stable.

I’ve found it to be pretty reliable. If I switch from winter to summer wheels or visa versus it come up with a warning because they’re a very slightly different rolling radius. I’ve also had it pick up on a single tyre if it’s a little low. Haven’t had any incorrect readings though.

I don't think they're overly sensitive. I've only had it give a warning once for a right rear tyre and when I checked it there was a slow puncture and it had lost about 6psi I think, so had worked correctly.

Thanks I'm going to keep a close eye on them. Interestingly they all droped about 2psi in just over an hour as they cooled down. Hopefully there isn't a slow puncture on brand new tyres. I had a nail in my last new car at 500 miles so if the same happens on this then I'm cursed.

Did you check the tyre pressure after picking up your car?
Stealers are renowned for not putting them to the correct pressure.
Mine were set for 18"s tyres when I picked mine up.

Thanks I'm going to keep a close eye on them. Interestingly they all droped about 2psi in just over an hour as they cooled down. Hopefully there isn't a slow puncture on brand new tyres. I had a nail in my last new car at 500 miles so if the same happens on this then I'm cursed.

Always a good idea to check tyre pressures as I have never had a new car delivered that had them correctly set...

I don't understand the motor trade at all. They can't get the basics right like setting tyre pressure, providing the code on the keyfob for the audi connect, clean the car without scratching plastics, leaving tape on the door etc. If they can't get the basics right why would people stick with the brand in the future!

I know the feeling. Paying for a premium brand you expect to be overwhelmed.
Doesn't seem the case with your dealer tho.
I would have took the car back with scratches.
I bought mine 2nd hand but ordered v spoke wheels.
I drove mine for a few days before checking the pressures.

The TPMS is vet poor on my 2018 S4.: it’s indirect, so works by measuring the rotational performance of the wheel. As opposed to direct that has a pressure sensor in the valve.
Anyhow, it’s sensitive especially when you get a large negative temperayte drop e.g? Heavy frost. .. happened a few times around the same time on 2 wheels. Pressure had dropped a bit due to cold, 2-3 (from 41).
A bit of a pain, but better than nothing at all !

I have to say that I’ve never had it say there was an issue when the temperature drops. I’ve had about 15 degree drop since I put them on and set the pressures. It may be an indirect system but it was smart enough to tell me exactly which one of my tyres was 8 psi low when I first put them on for winter!

I had a slow puncture last year. The tyre pressure warning consistently came up after the tyre lost 10% of its pressure. I would set the pressure (with my digital gauge) and then check again when the warning came up. High and low temperatures didn't make any difference. In fact, the warning came up one time after I had been driving on the motorway for 30 minutes, so properly warmed up. At least I now know that the warning comes up after the tyre has lost 10% form when the levels were set.

Interestingly, mine seems to have gone into lazy mode. The warning came up last week and I could see the relevant tyre was on the low side so stopped and inflated at the nearest petrol station and stored in the MMI. I checked the tyre tread carefully and couldn't see anything and wondered if it was a failing repair (same tyre has had 2 punctures in 12 months).

Since then, warning has only come up once,yet I'm loosing 10psi every 2 days.

The wind-up is I've now found a nice big shiny Phillips/crosshead on the inside edge of the tread, like another 2cm and it would've missed the tyre. So I'm expecting to be told it can't be repaired. I just want to avoid going to Kwikfit to be told 1. it can't be repaired and 2. they won't refit it i.e. "we'll happily sell you a new tyre you don't want" and they'll try and do it at retail, not the website price.

Turns out I had a nail in one of the front tyres, which i'm assuming was the cause of my tyre pressure indicator going off on my 2nd day of ownership. Good that Audi spotted it during a health check whilst it was in for the sub issue. I need to take the time to swap the front repaired tyre to the back this weekend now.
