S3 8L - Electric Power Fold Mirrors Retrofit Kit DIY

Is it electric folding had this with a seller they are electric heated and glass movement and they can fold if you push them but are they electric folding if you get me
I get you - it does say electrically folding, but that is something I would have to verify, as not a translation error.

They are left hand drive mirrors according to the description there, you could swap the electric folding parts on to your own right hand drive mounting bases
Syncro, can you explain what the difference is regarding LHD & RHD in this regard. I would have thought the connectors on each side are the same - no. Where would the LHD/RHD difference kick in?

I have some well priced mirrors on order that are power folding and compatible with the aluminium housings (will still need to adapt the S3 bases to take them). Will update when I know for definate they fit.

The bases are different on LHD cars to get the right views from sitting on the opposite side of the car. If you put LHD bases on a RHD car you wouldn’t be able to adjust them enough to get a proper view out of them.

I’m looking forward to this write up what bases did you use

These ones are VW Passat B5 Power Folding mirrors with the original 8L bases, these ones will only take plastic housings but I’m working on a set at the moment that will take the aluminium housings.

+1 Aluminium housing
great work
was'nt interested in folding mirrors at first but seeing them in action i know i need this mod :thumbs up:

I wonder how easy it is to get them to fold automatically when ignition goes on off
Can be done I can never be ***** folding mine manually I always forget @NHN did it
Yes you need the power fold bases, you dont need the oem switch/module for it to work, I actually used a trigger pulse of the conv module/pump in boot of the lock/unlock which triggered a timer relay to fold/unfold, 1 relay on each circuit, its just reverse polarity to fold opposite way.

There have been uses of the relay 361 but this method keeps power on the circuit all the time iirc & you have to question if it will do any good to the motor having power 24/7, hence why I opted for timer circuits which were iirc, 10 seconds which is plenty of time to fold/unfold either way.

I also incorporated the 1 click closure in the same circuit, was very cool tbh with full closure & folding on 1 remote press :)

The wiring diagram for auto folding/unfolding on locking/unlocking will be in the guide. I just prefer to keep it original like it would have come out the factory.

How come the plastic ones fit but not the aluminium I thought they were the same?

Warren, another quick question... did you have to get a different knob, that turns further? I recall seeing someone bodged a standard one, as the contacts are actually in place, but covered or something. Just wondering what option you went for.

It’s a 10 minute job to adapt the standard facelift switch for folding mirrors, no bodging involved... just need to remove a stop to let it rotate further.

How did you manage that was base did you have to use? More importantly how much is this going to cost me ha

These bases are off an Audi A6 C5 (brand new aftermarket), total cost involved is about £200 but you could obviously do it a lot cheaper if you could find some less expensive used ones.

Great to see you got a set to take the alloy caps, where did you source the new aftermarket c5 mirrors? It can certainly be done cheaper with second hand ones My c5 allroad electric folding mirrors were only 50 euros with the relay from the local breakers.
