DTUK TCU+ gearbox flash review

OK, I've just finished my commute to work and I'm sold.

Pulled hard from a set of lights in DRIVE and rather than change early the car changed much later. I got a genuine surprise (bit of a shock to be honest) as the car would normally change up sooner. As a result I screamed away from the lights much quicker than normal.

Overall feeling is hard to describe but in D there is definitely more urgency. It seems that a very spirited drive immediately after programming is 100% necessary because before I ran the programming procedure again I couldn't feel any difference at all.

Good.to hear

Not this morning, mate no.

Done it now on the way home. Went an A road blast. Hard to tell in Manual and Sport because the motor's bonkers as it is to be honest. Definitely seeing the biggest change in D though.

Hopefully just a glitch but had a drive error warning come up this morning upon starting the car. Cleared when I stopped then restarted the engine and hasn't happened again, yet.
Need a code reader...

I had this exact thing happen to my car too, but that was even before the TCU tune was installed...

I am planning on getting the ODB11 tool next term so should be able to read any error codes.
So far no re-occurrance has come up on the dash...

Had to drive to the airport yesterday, in a hurry. Got to the freeway on-ramp & gave it welly in 'S' (sure I could hear the trilogy clamoring for more!!).
Since then I swear SMI77 sounds throatier & drives better.:yahoo:

What about the competition ?

Obviously the above is dubious but I've had alot of negative regarding the DTUK TCU+ on another marque forum with a remapper crying 'FAKE' and others chiming in with 'placebo effect'.

****** unfair I'd say .

Very dubious, all in the above post...

Have to say I remain unconvinced. The difference on the RS5 is subtle to say the least.

This thread by any chance http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/index.php?threads/tcu-obd-flash-box.172953/ They've not even tried this product, yes there will be cheap ones that claim to do this and and that but DTUK are a very reputable company and do not release anything without testing the results first.

I read your comments and others very carefully , hense my interest in the product / identical but more expensive TMC product .

I'm disappointed in the response of the thread as dismissing something without trying or testing it is about as bad as it gets .

The Merc boxes are particularly slushy.

I appreciate not everyone is going to get the same result depending on the box .

I'd be surprised if it was a total placebo with the DTUK/TMC product because the shift points have been altered noticeably in my car, as well as the downshifts being quicker. You could argue that the upshift speed isn't so noticeable, but the slow speed smoothness definitely is.

For me I can feel that there's a difference, and driving in 'S' mode on the gearbox is much more enjoyable now since it doesn't hold onto gears for ridiculously long when it doesn't need to. So in my experience it was a worthwhile buy, but obviously not everyone will be in agreement. Especially if they've not tried it.

Completely agree with this

I have the TMC one and I found it has made difference, the shifts are quicker/smoother especially on the downshift. I drive mostly in manual mode using the paddles.

Maybe some are expecting a bit too much out of them. My car already changed gears pretty quickly before. If it took 1 second to change before and it was 25% quicker after the TMC then you’re not really going to feel a massive effect of .25 of a second.

The only issue I have is when the car is cold it skips between 7th and 8th gear when doing motorway speeds in D, In all driving modes. it doesn’t matter if you’re doing 70 or 90. I could be cruising at 75 on a flat road and it flicks between the gears without me adding anymore pressure to the pedal. But I could be doing 40 in D and it will happily sit in 7th at 1000rpm and it won’t even drop down to 6th or even 5th unless I press the pedal at least half way. However once the car is up to temperature after about 15 mins it’s fine and changes as it should.

Agreed, the gearbox is pretty quick at upshifts and I believe it to be actually milliseconds as standard anyway. Audi claim 8ms but power to power it is probably more like 200.
I certainly didn't purchase the product to speed up anything but more to aid when it changes gear and the delivery of the torque from my tuning box. Which it does so as the torque is now more linear instead of it coming in as a rush. Consequently my front tyres have an easier time...

I do not have stronic/DSG on my S4 Avant.

Sorry, spent not 500, but 457,70€. I do apologise.

Ah euros, makes sense now....
I have tiptronic

I would have thought tiptronic ‘may’ offer less of a noticeable difference as better/quicker than stronic. Or not?

@Filipão Did you take the car for a rather energetic drive through the gears after using the TCU+? I know there was a post on here previously where it was advised to do that after the idle period, someone redid it and noticed a difference following that.

P.S. I am remembering this from memory, I can find the post if needed

You are correct, it can be “reset” at any time, and following the idle period it is worthwhile doing spirited driving ideally in the various modes (nlt sure if this bit is needed) bit what the poster did.

After having mine on since May last year I'd say the difference is noticeable but it took me a while to feel the difference.

I also remember installing the flash quite a few times as I never felt the change was consistent enough and that maybe I wasnt doing it right.

The changes that I notice now are much smoother and firmer gear changes and a noticeable increase in mid range torque especially at motorway speeds.

One negative though is ever since I installed the flash my launch control is no where near as good as it was prior to the flash. Either I've done too many or its the flash. It's very strange when flooring it from the lights now feels quicker than what's supposed to be a proper launch.

So overall it has made a difference to me but I can definitely understand how others aren't feeling anything especially knowing that I've had to re install the flash a number of times.

This is so frustrating , my German non VAG slush box , changes are slow , BMW did a better job and so is VAG DSG .

On an individual car basis no one can tell me if the shift points will change , it's bi-turbo , 7 speed tiptronic with above average torque low in the rev range for the engine size .

As a result it can change up when in Economy mode as little as 1100 rpm , now this did make the engine grumble a bit .

But since the remap this is now effortless , it will even change at 1100 at the base of a hill and pull up the hill !

I don't want this shift point to change as it's been refined and where the economy is , but I want faster shifts , aggggh !

Apologies for posting on an Audi Forum (I do own a remapped Audi A6/C6 however).

I fitted a TCU+ gearbox flash to my 2014 Jaguar XK Dynamic R last November (I purchased the car in Oct 18), appreciate not the best time to do it since really can't drive in a spirited fashion with 510PS to the rear wheels. Actually more as mine has a smaller upper pulley, K&N dual filters, a performance zaust and a larger intercooler. Weirdly though it's running a standard map, regardless it's been dyno'd at 535 at the front end before any DTUK bits were fitted. Stock my car can apparently do 50-70 in 1.9s, which is not to be sniffed at...and where most peeps really need it :)

The reason I went for the Holy Trinity was that my ECU is notoriously difficult to remap and when pushed it may default to the standard map,

So TCU on first, initially I thought that all it did was a 'hard reset' allowing the tranny to relearn, which as most know can be done by touching the positive to negative battery leads. However I was wrong and have reinstalled in drier/warmer temps and taken it for a bit of a spin (?) it is rather nice, far slicker changes and no slushiness between gears 1-3!

Pedalbox and Power unit installed two weeks ago and haven't been able to test in earnest until this week.

Will be taking it back to the dyno in the next couple of weeks.

Not yet had the courage to test in dynamic and sport mode, but will best leave that for an airfield run.

I have noticed that my economy has increased by over 10% from 22mpg into work up to 26, but that could well be down to the warmer ambient temps

Will update with the new dyno if anyone's interested?

Hi Marky, congratulations on your XKR purchase I have only driven one around Oulton park on a couple of Jag track days. Great cars.

I am glad your tuners are working so well, it sounds like the ZF6 speed also likes the TCU mod.

Thanks SfC, I am sure it will be a complete hoot in the summer and with a 450w B&W system in it I find my 16yr old son has to turn down the volume as (the sub is in the passenger footwell) and the vibrations give him a headache...poor dear!
