Just wanted to hear your thoughts on how different the car is in terms of sound as I’ve just heard the New R8 with the filter on it and it’s so quiet All the pops and bangs have gone. Wandering if the S3 will lose Its DSG upshift noise too?

@unitzero has. Not heard anything about that yet from himself or other.

Or even a petrol particulate filter....

I much prefer "petrol particulate filter" because it is more appropriate for our market, but it seems like GPF is the more widely adopted terminology.

Unless you've driven both pre and post WLTP cars back to back you'll not know the difference if there is any and l doubt they'll be any difference

I think there’s gonna be a difference in the sound The WLTP cars will be quieter as the filter restricts sound. I’ve heard cars with it on and the results are noticeable unfortunately.

Really would like to see them side by side and hear if theres any difference. This is the one thing that worries me.

A DPF has a very noticeable effect on noise from the exhaust on a diesel so I can't see it being any different on a petrol. It presents a significant blockage to the free flow of exhaust gas, compared to a cat anyway, and this increases the back pressure. This will have a knock on effect with the performance. The effect of this is to average out the pressure pulses making the exhaust quieter. We are all heading towards a world full of electric cars so this gives Audi more opportunity to improve their electronic sound generators.

Found this video which I'm assuming is the 300ps version as it has the new wheels. Right at the end he revs the car and there's no pops and bangs, could just not be in dynamic?

Fair enough fitting it to normal cars but performance cars like the S and Rs cars shouldn’t have this nonsense filter fitted that’s my view on it . If only car manafacturers could take a stand against these unrealistic emission and co2 regulations . When the biggest Co2 emitters are different industries like mining and agriculture. Sad times ahead for the motoring industry.

I've owned a 2015 s3 and now a week old 2019 s3.The new one is very quiet even in dynamic with no pop's or bangs, though I'm only at 700 miles.
I'm sorry to say but it sounds just like a normal 1.8/2.0 tis engine.

Well I don't really get any "pops and bangs" in my PFL, the only real noise is the dsg farts on upshifts.
The FL has more pops and bangs and crackles or whatever you want to call them right.
So if the new 2019 version is worse than PFL.. ... Wow...

Really? That's definitely not good news if true. I'll be cancelling my order. This is so frustrating, wish they didn't change anything.

I guess I'll have to get a pre-owned one at this point. To be honest I feel burnt out on the S3 now, long wait times, dealers telling us different stories, and a subjectively worse car than The 2017 version..argh!

Well,it's true,to my ears at least.Perhaps I was expecting too much,I don't know.
I'm not putting a downer on the car, after a 6 month wait,I love the car and glad I didn't cancell the order.

The exhaust does open up a bit on the facelift after 3k miles or so, guess there is the option of modifying the exhaust if you want to go in that direction.

Some don’t think the FL is loud enough but personally I think it’s just right for a daily.

If anyone is in the Edinburgh/fife area with a wltp car wants to compare with my pre wltp car let me know. Will be good to find out how much different it can make doing a side by side

Perhaps O/T but the current RS4 complies afaik and it so quiet that I will not rev the engine for people as it embarrasses me! Tbf it does have a really nice "gurgle" on the over-run but I preferred the pops and bangs.

TX.

Edit - to confirm up-shift "whump" is still there so presumably S3 won't lose that either.

Or possibly not hot enough exhaust. Even though the engine is fairly hot, the exhaust also has to be up to temperature to make the pops and bangs during reving.

You did seem a bit embarrassed at Vag at the manor to rev it ;) such a shame as a beast of a car!

Suppose we just have to get used to all these quiet cars in this electric world ... :(

Ha ha yeah awkward that people were asking :astonished:

Tbf it is a little bit better today as I have AVC so valves always open^ + had the PCW mod done too so no baffles in there now! Still won't rev it for fun though.

TX.

^always open in dynamic, always closed in comfort.

Just been on the M140i forums and ppl with Pre PPF cars have noticed theirs have gone significantly quieter after Bmw installed a software update during their routine service. Wander if Audi are gonna do the same as they have done it to The TTRS Before

Still maybe the previous version as I think only the European cars got the pops on the overrun. The FL US owners have confirmed this.

I don't think the current B9 RS4 complies yet as it was released before the WLTP rule. The fact you cannot currently configure any new RS's cars on the configurator probably tells us something!

I found this on instagram, video clip of 2019 S3 exhaust sound.

Doesn’t sound drastically different to me, would need to know if in dynamic, if exhausts are warm etc.

Is the UK WLTP S3 300PS (296 bhp) and 280 lbft torque? Anybody had official confirmation. I've read torque figures for the S3 of 280, 295 and Audi website states the S3 has 400nm (354 lbft). Not sure which is correct?

Pre wltp s3 with dsg box was 400nm. Manual was 380nm.
Not sure what they have done with the wltp cars.
Think that’s why you see so many figures thrown about.
Edit: just checked configurator and it says 480nm. Seems high.
Also noticed it says memory electric seats as standard. Didn’t think that was available on the a3/s3 in the UK.

Honestly, I am not a fan of pops and bangs on any car. I do like a nice exhaust tone though. My 2107 S3 took about 3000 miles to loosen up the exhaust system and fortunately for me was a pre pops and bangs design. To each their own but a nice deep throaty sound is preferable for me and nigh impossible to obtain on a 4 banger engine.

Mines a 2018 and just pre wltp. Never really noticed any pops and bangs on mine other than the dsg farts.

Do you have your individual engine mode set to dynamic, you need that setting or select dynamic in drive modes.

Everything on dynamic and gearbox in S when I’m on a spirited drive. Most noticeable is the dsg farts not really any pops and bangs. Maybe the odd pop on overrun. Like you said a 4 pot with big turbo/mufflers and now gpf there’s not gonna be much decent sound and anything decent will be artificial like the dsg farts.

Without a Res delete it's rare, unless you're in sport and manual, this is the only time I managed it , overrun at around 2.5kish rpm off teh top off my head. A lot louder and easier with Res delete if you want that sort of thing

I wonder if there are differences in the FL, mine is an early 2017 model and get pops and bags most downshifts in dynamic, both in D and S gearbox setting. I get them in auto as well, just not as often.

Mines pops n bangs as its known constantly in downshifts everything set to dynamic bar the suspension setting in the individual mode but to be honest it wouldn't bother me if it didn't my last PFL only done the dsg upshift noise. I really can't see the MY19 cars not doing this but it's a 3rd world problem

Mine would have been one of the last before wltp. Took delivery August.
Could be my old semi deaf ears or just have the stereo on too loud.
