Best Alloy Wheel Brushes

Been a member on here, well the 8V forum for a good few years now. A couple of days ago I had a quick look on this section and have been reading through threads since.

I am looking to upgrade my cleaning arsenal and going to make a start with the alloy kit. So looking for recommendations on the best alloy brush/mitt combo to use. I am just using a standard wheel brush (same sort of design as the EZ Detail), noodle mitt and a detailing brush at the moment.

Been looking at the Incrediflair Wheel Mitt and Wheel Woolies but I am not sure what I would need size wise, if the 3 pack or angled brush is worth it or if the mitt makes life easier.

So what does your alloy cleaning kit consist of? Any guidance and recommendations would be appreciated.

I have the standard 5 spoke twin S3 alloys so nothing too intricate!

Can't find the hog hairs brushes as that was around a year ago I got them. They were red and white but really good for the money

You just use the angled one for the whole alloy? I thought it was a just to get the back of the spokes! Ashamed to say I dont spend much time on my tyres, need to step things up!

Get yourself a Tufshine tyre brush whilst you've got the detailing bug, you'd be amazed the dirt the tyre sidewalls can hold, it's makes a night and day difference once you go to dress the tyres for a start you'll use less product and you'll get a fantastic finish

Thanks, I'll add that to the list. I am low on dressing, the bottle is upside down in the garage and has been for many months - as I say I dont spend much time on the tyres! I dont think tyres come out of the factory looking like yours! Could you recommend a dressing too please!?

Yes to get behind the spokes, then I use a detailing brush, as stated...

@josul - My recommendation would be genuine Wheel Woolies
I've had my set for around 5 years & they are still going strong
I've even used them to decontaminate the wheels with full strength CarPro IronX without it affecting the brushes
I would recommend buying the genuine 1's as there is lots of copies around

They are not cheap, so it all depends what you want & what you want to spend

I have those three in the video BH has linked to above, two of them I use to clean my exhaust tips with and the smaller one has been stolen by my partner to clean out bird feeders

I don't use wheel brushes the alloys l have are extremely easy to clean inside the barrels, i can actually get to back of the wheels with a sponge then l use a incredimitt for the face of wheels. . Again l ain't heavy on the brakes so not a lot dust build up, l wouldn't use a full undiluted wheel cleaner either, got to be watered down 50/50 ie bilt hamber wheel cleaner and l only use it diluted every month or so,also l make sure it doesn't go anywhere near the nut covers or the hub covers as it will discolour or take the plastic coating of them, l have purchased a incredimitt wheel brush before but found it a bit waste of a good mitt and it didn't do a better job than l do with a sponge

Haha. There is nothing wrong with Megs. You can’t argue with the finish @Bristle Hound is getting! I have never had product throw with it, but them don’t use shedloads, and have even driven not too long after applying

By the way, off topic, how is the new surround gear?

Most of it is still in the boxes mate as we're still in the process of decorating, took out the Lx 500 for wee look at and play a movie on it, very very impressed indeed, also ended up going for the Pioneer SC LX 701 instead of the Lx503 Lx 701 much better amp old school pioneer and got it for £800 half the price it was a year ago skint noo lol

I got 4 genuine wheel woolies for chrimbo and I used them first time last week. My 5 wing arm alloys weren’t too difficult to clean with a mitt as Jassyo references too, but the ww’s take the depth of cleaning to a better level. They are easier to use to get a thorough clean, for example where the callipers are especially on the fronts, it’s too tight for a mitt to clean deep into the drum, the ww’s deal with this well. The angled woolie is my favourite and is excellent for cleaning the back of the spokes and it is effortless. I did used to clean the back of spokes and drums with a mitt, but never have I seen so much crud coming out than when I used the woolies. I’d say it makes me spend a little longer on the wheels, as it can be slightly fiddly changing between all the brushes, and I’m trying to cut cleaning time, but it takes less physical effort and it is more thorough for sure. And what is not in doubt is the quality of the brushes, you just know they are a quality product when using them. Pricey for sure, but if they last as long as others suggest they will, defo worth it.

As for cleaning solution, so far I’ve just been using my shampoos, and because I keep on top of them and they are also protected by Gtechniq wheel armour, this is all I have needed. Once this starts to wear off no doubt I will need something stronger.

I like the idea of the angled brush to get behind the spokes, just have to decide if I need the 3 pack or if just one would do to get into the barrels. After seeing these tyre shots I need to check out the stock levels of tyre dressing then!

I have just put two lights on the front of the garage, the car sits in front so its making me more obsessive about it. Cant have it looking dull under lights now can I.

I am hoping it will help speed things up, as what I have at the moment makes it awkward. In saying that and you mentioning that you use all, might as well get the 4 together, saves on postage and all that...

The angled one for back of spokes and callipers, the small tiny one for wheel nuts, the big one is good for most of the wheel and getting right into the back of the drum, but only on the rears, too tight on the fronts, and this is where the medium one comes in. Also, get 3 grips too, helps them not to slip. If you’re after really thoroughly cleaning your wheels, I think you’ll be happy. Backs of spokes and drums etc is probably above and beyond the averages joes wheel cleaning levels, but then average joe ain’t a member on here I don’t think ha...

Sounds like your getting yourself a nice set up there, what speaker are you pairing with them? I got a Yamaha AV and 5.1 speakers about 5 years ago, had to redecorate the living room as a compromise too...

Grips too!? The list just grows. Guess it's a good job she didn't get me a wheel brush for Xmas, there wouldn't have been this much thought put into it!

Yea you can buy little rubber socks for them lol. They’re only £1 each, the tiny brush doesn’t fit them so just get 3

Kef T301s L/C/R, restricted for space so need to be flat speakers wall mounted, subwoofer Rel T7i and a Focal Dome subwoofer, sides and rear surrounds are a combination of Focal Dome and Cambridge Audio Minx,will add front height speakers later for Atmos/DTS X coz l am ****** skint now but at least it's not as much a waste of money spent as buying detailing products and ****** tyres lol

I have black powder coated rotors and I just use Pro Bilberry diluted 50/50 and a micro fibre cloth

What every you buy don't get the Autoglym wheel brush, it covered a set of alloys in fine scratches, was completely gutted when I saw the damage it inflicted..

the wheels take as much time to detail as the car sometimes. BUT, once those wheels are detailed then the next few months its easy peasy. I like the wheel woolies and I agree it important to clean the sidewalls prior to adding product. Wheel cleaning is not for the faint at heart.
