My MMI High Basic/Dumb Retrofit Guide

I purchased my car last month not realising that NAV wasn’t standard or the 7” screen was even a feature of the car… The main thing for me was the quality of the screen not the features.

So I set about buying items and finding as much as possible about retrofitting it and here is MY OWN experiences/opinions/warnings about what you need to do/don’t do to get it working.

First off the parts I used to get this working…

MMI Unit High: 8V0 035 043 D - £200 delivered
MMI 7” Screen: - 150 Euro delivered
CP Removal - £45 (Independent garage with GEKO)

To locate the box I’ve searched on eBay Germany/UK to find the parts (Germany is fairly cheap)

From what I’ve read people say you need the touch controller/dash piece to complete this but mine works completely fine without it - as such I think you only need this for the touch control/handwriting feature.

Next, the tools I’ve used to get complete the job..

iSesamo (Good bendy but sturdy trim removal tool)
Scalpel/Sharp tool
Radio Removal Keys
Torx Set
A GENUINE VCDS cable/access to one (You won’t be able to code your 5F with a fake one as it can’t code your box due to not running new enough software)
IMG_1312_zpslbgpbzq6.jpg

Next was getting the parts fitted in.. To remove the screen you need your trim removal tool to pop off the dash trim around the screen, it can be a little hard to get the clips off. TRY NOT TO TOUCH YOUR SCREEN AS THE COATING WEARS OFF VERY EASILY

IMG_1304_zpsyl9mwkjl.jpg

IMG_1301_zpsh9aeemmq.jpg

After you need to remove both of your vents, which will reveal two screws inside the vents (Some people stick a screwdriver through the vent to get to them but I didn’t want to risk damaging them). You can get these off with your nails behind them and pulling them out. After remove the two screws. These do stay in when unscrewed but I pulled them out as not to loose them in the dash to be on the safe side.

IMG_1305_zpsoyyophqx.jpg

After this the screen is ready to come out.. If you look through your vents you will see a clip in each holding the screen in. I used my iSesamo to push one a time pulling on the screen at the top.

When you get the screen out, simply unplug the wires. You have to prise the clips off of the radio and undo the tie wrap holding the screen on.

Next, get your new screen and and have a look at the yellow cable that plugs into the screen, and on the socket on the screen it’s likely to have a different fitment. Work out what is different and get a scalpel/some other sharp tool and shave the fitment off. Plug everything in and the refit in reverse order.

After this you can install your MMI Box, open the glovebox and put your radio keys in to remove it. Simply unplug all the connectors and replug them in on your new box. I didn’t had to shave one more of the connections to get it to fit. When plugged in you can put your mmi box back in.

Next turn your ignition on to see if everything works. You’ll likely notice everything works other than your sound, this is due to the component protection on your box.

CODING/COMPONENT PROTECTION REMOVAL

I personally got component protection removed before I coded the box do my car so you can do this in any order.

To get the protection removed either find somebody with the authorised tool or visit an Audi/VW garage thats willing to do it for you. If they tell you that it’s not compatible with your car it’s likely they’re trying to code the box for your car as well which isn’t possible so tell them you only want the protection removed.

Now onto the coding…

After removing my component protection the sound worked fine, but not very good quality. This then stopped and displayed currently unavailable again. After another trip to the garage thinking CP is on it turns out it wasn’t and something else was wrong.

I then purchased a genuine VCDS cable and began trying to code the box to my car.. unfortunately for me the label files still wasn’t around for my box so it’s all a bit of guess work, even on the beta version.

I started by copying the coding from my old box onto my new box, this gave my sound again but It felt like it was only half hearted (I have B&O). Reading around the forums I can tell you the following about the coding on a 5F box… Don’t take it as gospel.

Byte 0-3

000000 - Control Module not Coded
017300 - Audi A3 8V1 (3DR)
017305 - Audi A3 Cabriolet
017301 - Audi A3 Limousine
017303 - Audi A3 Sportback

Byte 04
Bit 0-7 - 00 - NAV Not installed
Bit 0-7 - 01 - Navigation database Europe (I presume it means installed)

Byte 11 Sound System

  • 01 - Sound System with internal amp (Base system/***)
  • 02 - B&O - I found simply selecting box 2 doesn’t work. You should change the coding in the box!
Bytes 04/05 Sound System - I read many guides saying you need 00 00 for band and Olufsen. I found that changing to FF 0A is what you actually need.
  • 00 00 - Base sound system
  • FF 00 - ***
  • FF 0A - B&O
Byte 9 This is the tuner area for the FM/AM Radio.
This should be set at 11 for Europe.

Byte 10 This is the tuner area for the DAB Radio.
This should be set at 11 for Europe.

Byte 16 -This is to enable all of your bluetooth features.
Bit 0 - Bluetooth Enabled
Bit 1 - BT Multimedia enable/active
Bit 2 - BT Function Active/Supported
Bit 3 - BT Audio Function active/supported
Bit 4/5 - BT Visible

Byte 19
Bit 1 - Right Hand Drive
Bit 4 - Rear View Camera Installed
Bit 6/7 - USB Port Installed

Byte 20
Bit 0 - Screen installed/connected

Things of note

Don’t pull on your screen without releasing the clips, your likely to pull to hard and end up with a bruised forehead/nose.

The MMI High unit can easily be noticed as it says Harman on it instead of Panasonic.

Make sure you buy a box that meets your needs… I bought one without DAB thinking it came standard, it doesn’t.

The NAV worked fine on my car before I got the CP removed, it now doesn’t work and says it’s not enabled when clicking on the NAV, I presume this is due to it being deactivated in the process.

The coating on the screen wore off because of my finger pressing too tight on it, don’t make the same mistake it seems to come off easily.

If your screen doesn’t close properly after the installing it, it’s likely because you need to put the wire with the tie wrap back in it’s place and secure it with another one.

I initially plugged my screen and box in without shaving any connections to test to see if they worked before cutting my car up. This won’t work. I thought it was an aerial in the back of the screen, turns out it’s the power cable for the screen. I had mug on for a good day before realising this (Then again you might not be as dumb:))

Issues I currently have
I can’t get the OPS to show up on my new box even though it’s activated. Can anybody help me with that one?

I’ve used many guides around the internet, read through many pages of translated Italian/German to figure some things out. Hopefully it helps you if you decide to do it. This is my first guide, so it may seem like I’m telling you the basics but it’s things I had to research so maybe you will do!

OMG, so amazing, there's so much talk with me and DJAlix to get this done to our cars/ We dont have B&O but would like what you've got already done. Have so many questions but our main issue was the CP.

So with your kit you purchased, was SAT NAV working or did you have to have it activated like we all know from experience with the dealer?
Also can you share your garage who did the CP removal? Any drawbacks with this getting done?

EDIT: Just re-read your thread, so at the moment you have 1/2 of your sound working but still no Sat Nav? Anyway around this you thinnk?

The Sat nav was fully working fine before I had component protection removed. After that it says "Navigation data not enabled" on it, so I'm unsure if it's been deactivated or disabled with VCDS/lost it's maps ect.

I think I've fixed my sound coding it to FF0A, I think the main issue I had when playing about with coding is that selecting just Bit 2 on Byte 11 only coded it to 01, whereas the coding needed to be 02.

The garage I got CP Removed from was just down the road from me in Rotherham

Thats my concern, the 7" high res screen is great but using it for sat nav is the main point.
So at the moment, the sound is working for you with your B&O setup - GREAT

However is your sat nav working? Strange how it worked when you plugged in the first time and it was all working. From our knowledge you can't mix and match MMI units (central console, MMI and screen)
From what you've done, it sounds like the MMI sat nav worked with your VIN number and was activated!

Yes it's working fine I think, I can't plug the old unit in to check the other sound quality anymore as it's got component protection activated on it (I assume the car is programmed to which box aswell)

I've read a lot of people saying that you must have all three, however mine is working with my existing centre console fine with no issues other than my OPS not working even though turned on. (Maybe it is because the centre console hasn't been changed over, but can't see why.. could yet be proved wrong).

The MMI sat nav worked perfectly with component protection turned on.. as you can see in the picture thats from my area trying to take me to Netherlands (Was the default location on it lol). As soon as it got turned off I had the Nav is not enabled message.

There is a fair bit more to retrofitting "MMI High" and having it all working 100%.

Nav not working is a licence issue. Audi, if you can find a willing dealer, will prolly ask you to buy a new licence at full price. It's not as simple as the SD based nav also.

Connect, if you have the option, will never work as your details need to be entered on to the server at the time of purchase.

I have seen many different ways to retrofit MMI High and none are elegant at this point.

Whats more to do to get it fully working? Other than working out the coding?

I thought it might be be an activation issue, I didn't have maps originally anyway so would have to pay for the licence anyway.

I've not found much information about doing this at all so thought I would try help/give a bit of info on it at least. Do you have any suggestions on getting my OPS to work on this unit?

Currently I am debating if I should turn my own car in to a "project car" so to speak, retrofitting MMI High 1 (if I can source the parts for cheap) or MMI High 2 (I have a factory source for these), or just chop it in for a FL model with everything I want and then reverse engineer, which is why your project interests me :)

My reply yesterday was very rushed as I was sitting at a departure gate waiting to hop on a flight back to the UK, but now I have a little more time...

There are two main issues / features here which are working exactly as Audi / VAG group intended, Component Protection and Software As A Product (SWaP). CP I think most of us know about by now. There is a legit way of removing it, via Audi Dealership or authorised 3rd party, and then a good number of ways to "get around" it including both hardware and software (firmware) hacking. You seem to have found a trustworthy 3rd party at a very good price as I know of a few "dodgy" 3rd parties who want £65+ via hacking.

Anyway CP is not your issue here, SWaP is as this is how Audi now manage their maps these days... ACC, Drive Select and standard CC also believe it or not. My research has found that everything is basically tied to two things within your car, the VIN number and your CAN Gateway. Your maps are not working because your CAN Gateway is not configured / licensed for HDD Maps and the current licensing data within your MMI unit is tied to the VIN Number of the "donor" car which your "new" MMI unit came from. My research has found that Audi will not reconfigure this information, they will only overwrite it and that a new licensing pack is needed in order to complete the procedure. Three possible issues here:
  1. Finding a dealer willing to take on the job
  2. The cost of the Licensing pack and installation
  3. Proving that your new MMI Unit is not stolen
Firstly I believe that no 3rd party can even order the needed licences so Audi IS the only legit option here and for want of a better phrase most cannot be ***** with jobs like this as they are more hassle than they are worth. Costings? The costs to the dealer are as follows:
  • Licensing Pack is £216 approx
  • Activation Pack is £189 approx
As these are just cost / trade prices you can be sure that there will be a large "Audi-TAX" slapped on top of these and that Audi will also change a labour fee for application. Lastly we come to proving that the unit is legitimate... I have no experience of this but I read mixed experiences online, from some dealers not really caring to others wanting you to jump through hoops. Just because a part has already had CP removed does not make it legit in Audis eyes.

Moving on to the OPS problem... if you can send over your long coding and adaptation maps for control modules 5F and 10 I am sure we can get this working. I think I know what the issue is but to be sure, and to not keep going backwards and forwards, seeing this information will be faster :) Fire a mail to alex@vagcarcoding.com

As long as you can get it to work, and your happy with everything else on your car surely retrofitting it would be the easiest way :)

I originally was looking for a hacked way to get rid of getting around CP so that I could keep the maps as i suspected it would remove them.. I thought I was getting one until he came out with the genuine tool ect. But yeah I tried an Audi dealer, spoke to 5 people in there, some said yes and then a the end person in parts he point blank refused.

Also I was under the impression that they had to check if it's stolen/that the tool did the checking at the same time (Maybe I'm wrong - most probably.)

Just so you know, if you are thinking about it, on the German eBay site there is 2 MMI High units with connect that are listed as NEW/Neu so I assume no component protection for €262 euro. (I know you can't use it but in least it's more of an uprated model.

Was in conversation with a contact of mine last night and the subject of CP and Maps came up. He is an experienced and very advanced retrofitter and informed me that for retrofitting a "used" unit the only way to have navigation working is to have the MMI unit hacked.

Thanks for your reply. Do you know who can do this professionally? I found a very helpful lad online but looking to get multiple quotes.
P.S. I've sent you a PM.

Also, I've seen some carplay retrofits online, they claim are plug and play. Not sure if I'm allowed to post the link here but I guess you know what I'm talking about. Are they any good or it's a hoax?
Thanks!

I can retrofit MIB2 units :) Not looking at / replying to pm’s until after the new year. Approx £2000.00 for a new and activated (no Audi connect) full MIB2 retrofit.

The CarPlay retrofits you are seeing are 3rd party emulators which daisy chain in to your MMI system. They work but are not apple approved. Ones I have tested had poor sound quality.

Hi thanks for this. Your quote is roughly is the same ball park with lad's I've mentioned which are too much than I can comfortably fork out (Especially after Google maps not working from 2020).
Think I'll have to live with the 'contraption' I've made to cast the phone to the screen and get the VIM unlocked.
Thank you very much!
P.S. do you know when you can help me with the unlock? Thx

You mean the google maps overlay? Audi does not use google maps for navigation data, only the google earth graphics in order to "pretty" things up.

I am back in the UK from January 7th.

Maybe I misread the info out here. Thought you can have google maps too(which is not the same thing as google earth I think?) instead of their sat nav, so thought this will be unavailable from 2020.

VW Groub MIB1, MIB2, MIB2.5 and MIB3 units have never used google maps for navigation data. People seem to get confused between navigation data and navigation view data.

There is only 1 service that google supplies to VW Group for the MIB1 unit, the option to display a google earth graphic overlay if you have Audi connect. What about the MIB2 and onwards? The same graphic overlay service is available but google also licences these units for Android Auto and Audi Tablet (not a UK product).

If google maps is your thing then Audi Smartphone Interface (ASI) is what you want, which was officially available from the release of the MIB2. ASI is Audi’s branding for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, both of which allow the use of Google Maps.

Thanks for this guys. The MIB retrofit was a good dream but really don't want to pay that much money just for that.

All via VCDS, and as mentioned over sms the green engineering menu on your mmi is nothing like that of mmi3G and is used for nothing other than diagnostics.

If your VCDS is up to date there will be labels for the modifications you are asking about:

-Parking display would be in control module 10 long coding.
-splash screen would be 5F long coding, it’s a drop down.
-reversing camera would be a combination of installation list coding in 19, long coding in 10, 6C and adaptations in 5F. There is a very very detailed thread on the forum which shows every retrofit step from taking the car apart to fit through to the coding :)

Hi DJAlix,
As you know i'm doing a audio upgrade on my A3 s line with B&O S3 Amp and a mixture of Mission & Alpine component speakers and need some tips on wiring from the car to the doors (do i need to add cables/contact pins in rubber boot)
Thank TeckB.

Hi guys, little old thread, but maybe someone can help. :)

Currently I have MMI with navigation and two SD card slots (I believe it's Panasonic) and smaller screen. Also I have "black controls" on central console and speakers with subwoofer at trunk (trying to post as much details as possible for help).

Is it possible just to buy bigger screen instead of smaller one, will it work? Or I need to buy another unit (Harman's) + central console buttons + bigger screen? Coding is a must, I get that, just trying to figure out what I need to get bigger screen.
