I had to go to the dealership to fix the S3 subwofer nob not shown in the sound menu. they had to replace the version of the MMI. Now after the change, it is not possible to choose Google maps in the map menu. When you select it, it goes back to standard when you navigate out of the menu.
Because of that, no longer possible to have the google earth overlay.

Mine is still working perfectly. As for the subwoofer control, you don't really gain much by having it as far as the quality of the sound is concerned.
The Audi Connect features gradually seem to be getting removed: Facebook, street view and now Google earth maps
….but Goggle Earth maps haven't been removed. It's possible that when the 1st three year's entitlement expires you will probably have to contact Audi CS or your local friendly dealer to get the Connect licence extended but that's it.
Or where they have replaced the MMI , Audi connect needs to be activated again to get your google maps as it’s all linked to the licensing in mmi .. mine expires in 2023 I think
My FL RS3 did have Google maps ( never used street view) but lately it has completely disappeared, have not done an update either, not sure why it’s gone?

Found this whilst looking at the new A6 press release:
"Google Earth features will not be available after December 2020 for Model Year 2018 & prior vehicles".

Feeling horrified over this bit of news because the Google map overlays are fabulous and a differentiator for Audi over just about ever other vehicle outside of the VAG group portfolio.
It would appear to me to not be as bad as first thought, from Dec 2020 the bits that are going to disappear will be not much missed by me anyway - namely the Google Street Views and the 3D map models - check out the 12th post in this link from Audi USA:

Agreed, I think the overlay is very much the icing on the cake which impresses. In the summer of next year I have to make a decision whether to keep this car, and pay the final settlement figure, or purchase another new car.
It won't be an A4 but could be another Audi, possibly the new 2019 A3 saloon, but without the overlay I would not feel the need to have the VC, unless it is a standard fitment...

If the new A1 and Q3 are anything to go by then the VC is standard however the high-end Sat Nav is still optional on most models.
Yes that's what I deduced as well. But then on the new 2019 A3 one would also assume it'll have the hardware that supports the overlay. Of course, if I go with my heart, then it could easily be a preowned TT roadster...

I can only but guess with the MY18 onwards vehicles having the E-SIM that plenty of telemetry around usage of the MMI / VC is being sent back to Audi for analysis, that this would probably form some basis around how many are actively using the Google Maps overlay perhaps?
To be honest, I use it as a show off gimmick, or rarely for cool views like when travelling up to the Highlands and seeing the mountains from above, but generally I stick to the Traffic view, as it's just cleaner, and not as 'noisy' when using it on my daily commute for traffic monitoring.
So I could care less if the Google Maps Satellite overlay was to go, but if they got rid of Google traffic that would be a big kicker - as that's the one thing I've come to depend on with MMI, and is a big differentiator over the VAG group navigation technologies.
I'm keeping a close eye on the market over the coming year. As much as I would be happy to own another Audi (Q3 uplift looks intriguing) as a company car, I don't feel it's going to shape that way unless I cough up a lot more coin for it...

No need to guess Maui - it would appear that the issue has been caused by Google changing the tech requirements of their services rather than anything Audi has done. The 3D mapping isn't the terrain profiling that the SatNav produces if you don't have the Google Map overlay displayed but rather in the major cities you can see the buildings defined by shape, relative size and location. It looks pretty cool doesn't it? Super useless in practice as it's distracting - you have enough stuff to watch out for in major city driving without this. Great party trick though.

This we don't know, if we take Audi's statement literally then yes. However if they are still using the same hardware, more than likely no..

Some people are referring to google earth, and some people are referring to google maps. Can someone just confirm, are you using these terms to refer to the same feature - satellite imaging in the sat nav, or are they different?
My A4 has just gone, so I can't go and have a play to check what the differences are. From memory in Audi connect there was a google earth option, but all that did was essentially bring up satellite mapping? Its an option I rarely used it which is why I can't remember if its any different?

Google Earth as defined by Wikipedia is this:
The bit of the Google service that's changing is 3D maps (city centre and major landmark buildings) which to be frank are of little use as a navigation tool so I really don't mind what they do with it.
"Google Earth is a computer program that renders a 3D representation of Earth based on satellite imagery. The program maps the Earth by superimposing satellite images, aerial photography, and GIS data onto a 3D globe, allowing users to see cities and landscapes from various angles."
Google maps (i.e. seeing your navigation data overlaid on Google satellite imagery) is a separate Google service and that's not changing - so you will see that in future Audi vehicles - in fact across the VAG ranges.
The bit of the Google service that's changing is 3D maps (city centre and major landmark buildings) which to be frank are of little use as a navigation tool so I really don't mind what they do with it.

Thanks for that. Well, I never used google earth from the car, so I guess I'm not going to miss that.
Just to be clear for those that are not sure, the satnav in the new A6 (so presumably what will also be appearing in the new A4) has both normal and satellite views, with 3D models (if you want them). The satellite imagery is now provided by another company, can't remember who though. Its pretty much exactly the same as it was before from a satnav point of view, I can't discern any difference. Actually, the non-satellite view is better, it has a way of presenting the terrain/contours slightly different with a range of colours, so gives it a nicer look/feel.
I've personally always found the satellite view distracting and somewhat obfuscates the map and makes it harder to see the road network. I would generally only put it on when showing the satellite imagery is more helpful if I'm specifically looking for something in an area that I'm not familiar with. But then, looking out the window provides even more detail...

So now I fully understand that Google Street View has not worked since 2017 and that Google Earth will stop working on MY2018 and earlier cars from December 2020. But my question relates to the Online traffic updates which appear on the map. Is that part of Google or separate - if it's part of Google then will that stop as well? I can live without Google Earth (although I use it all the time) but I'd be really upset to lose the Online traffic which is far better than the TP or TP Pro which is used when the car goes "offline" occasionally.
I'm sure that Audi use Here navigation in their newest sat nav systems for this and vehicles share and report to each other the traffic information
