Looking at possibly getting an A3 Saloon 2.0TDI for running a load of motorway miles.

What are the spec options like on them? Any must have options? Any to avoid?

Ideally as a minimum I’d like sat nav and leather interior, was leather an option on these?

Go for S-Line,. Leather is option, Satnav standard, comfort and sound pack option is all you need IMO.

What kind of age are you looking at? Brand new?

Pretty sure that leather was an option on all of them. The lowest level on 5he saloon was Sport - no SE like on the other shapes.
Comfort pack had things like auto lights and wipers etc. Can’t remember the details now.

Would look for one with front and back parking sensors as well as upgraded sound system. Wouldn't worry about navigation tbh and cruise control might be worthwhile if you do lots of miles but you could always get that fitted by audi .

You'll want the face lifted car, 66 plate on wards....search the Audi Approved web site

Why specifically the FL? What's wrong with the PFL?

Face lift is a better looking car Simples...and to elaborate on this, the rear lights look ****** good and the Led headlights are way better than the Xenons on the face lift car....l have owned both, apart from these points....the steering wheel and the optional virtual cockpit.....bring the car right up to date

Did CarPlay/auto not become standard at some point?
Could get away with a non Nav car or lower spec and use CarPlay/android auto instead depending on your budget.

Think my budget will be around 15-17 don’t know where that lands me?

Should just get a facelift. It’s will be a toss up between a high mileage on with all the toys or low mileage low spec.
Lots of diesel been to the moon and back at a bargain price though might be worth looking at. Most folk buy diesel cause they are high mileage users. Have you not thought about a petrol? I had a golf petrol 1.4 courtesy car and it was quick enough for motorway driving and I managed to squeeze just over 50mpg on long journeys. Coupled with 10p cheaper for petrol per litre it isn’t far off diesel economy.
Lots of lower mileage petrol examples and better spec for similar money.

I’ll be doing around 20k a year so not mega miles but more than I want to put on my S4.

I’ve heard differing things about the mpg you get from the petrol. 50 would be fine. I do also usually prefer petrol engine. In fact the only oil burner I’ve liked is the bitdi in the better half’s SQ5.

Bitdi was a phenomenal engine. I had the 272 in an a6 and all the 3.0tdi I’ve driven is silky smooth and quick.
You should have shot of a small petrol with the new cod engines are really efficient. I couldn’t complain about the golf I had for a few weeks other than it was slow compared to my s3. Saved heaps on petrol though. Struggling to get 30mpg in s3 compared to around 50mpg in the same commute.

The 1.4/1.5 cod engines are a dream. Really good economy - specially on motorway journeys (as long as you keep to the speed limit!)

Maybe on the FL - but this guy was looking for an older model.
Fair enough but didn’t read that on his first post, plus I’m just off night shift so my brain is still way behind my other functions

OPs budget is £15-17k so I reckon late pfl or early fl is within range.

Want to go smaller than the A4 B8 that I have at the moment. It’ll just be for me heading up and down the motorway so it doesn’t need to be the bigger car but I do like a saloon car.

If it’s a cruiser you are looking for then my money will be an a6 c7. Had 3 of them and they are brilliant for cruising, comfortable, quiet and a lot of car for not a huge amount of money. Base spec has nav, parking sensors etc. £17k might even get you a 3.0 Quattro.

That’s even bigger again, lol and I’ll bet terrible on fuel.

My 272 Quattro a6 comfortably got 45+mpg. Highest I had was a run between Edinburgh and Manchester and got 55mpg. Wasn’t great in city driving but cruising at 70-80mph was almost as economical as my older 2.0tdi(177)non Quattro a6.
The 3.0 doesn’t need to work hard compared to the 2.0. As I said standard kit is very generous compared to a3 so worth thinking. I would avoid the big wheels(20s) as that didn’t help fuel economy and a harsher ride. 18s were good and 19s was somewhere in the middle.

Fair enough, you didn't really specify any details, or previous car, so I suggested what would be more for your money, plus streets better than the old B8...
