when do you have to get consumables replaced

sorry if this is obvious but on my last car (BMW) the idrive would tell you how much lifespan you had left in brakes, oil etc before needing a service change.

I can see that Audi do have an oil message but i cant see any messages regarding disks etc

also i find it very odd that you can reset the oil frequency through the MMI. why is that option given
 
I'm also not sure why the MMI allows you to reset the oil service indicator to be honest?

It won't tell you when you need discs or anything though, you just have to keep an eye on them and replace them when you see they're getting worn. Old school. :)

Quite, but then some can't be bothered to even open the bonnet, no reference to anyone here of course, or even check their tyre pressures. But when it goes belly up because of no cyclical checks being performed they then blame the manufacturer.
I am all for old school, where it can apply, but then that's how we were brought up...

Indeed! Although I think that our cars at least have pad indicators do they not? So at least as a worse case people should be alerted before they fail... As for the discs though, that's a different issue I guess.
 
Yes pad wear indicator, brakes overheating, brake fluid level, washers low, etc etc. In fact the manual from page 27 to 38 shows what each warning light on the dash can indicate...
 
Pretty confident in each pad having wear indicators. I know my A6 2011 does so should hope something newer does.
 
so what about brake fluid or when the car should have a standard inspection.

thats one thing i do miss about my BWM - even on my 2017 5 series you could not fail to note when something needed to be changed as the idrive listed everything for you.

is there a chart showing these timings.

Brake fluid should be changed every two years, don't need some techie machine to tell us that.
I know it might be old school but read the manual - all your answers will be in there...
 
The I-Drive indicators for brake pads and discs are only estimates based on the average mileage that’s expected to to get out of them along with driving data. They’re not accurately measured via sensors or anything which is why Audi probably didn’t bother.

When I changed the rear discs on my M6, the car said that I had much longer left on them than I actually did.
 
I never knew brake fluid change was meant to be done every 20k or so.... is it best to get it done at Audi for an extremely high price or get it done at a VAT registered garage?? I've got my pads done at a very reputable garage which was 4x cheaper than Audi

I'd say that as long as it's a decent garage and they use approved parts/fluids to preserve your warranty then there shouldn't be an issue using an independent. That's what I've always done and never had an issue. As you say, they're significantly cheaper for the same (possibly better) service than a main dealer.

I think that brake fluid might be more of a time for changing, rather than based on mileage, but I could be wrong. It makes sense in my head though as I'd have thought it will absorb water at a certain rate so unless you're tracking the car then every two years should be fine I'd have thought.
